    When EE’s Become the New A’s Kenya has quietly crossed an academic Rubicon. For decades, we were conditioned to worship the A and fear the E. An A meant excellence. An E meant failure. Full stop. Today, under the Competency-Based Assessment system, that script has been rewritten. EE – Exceeding Expectations – is now the highest mark. Not a rebranded A. Not grade inflation. But a philosophical shift. This is not about ranking children against each other. It is about measuring learners against clearly defined competencies. What this moment signals: • Excellence is no longer a single exam snapshot • Learning is no longer memorisation under pressure • Talent is no longer reduced to one narrow academic lane • Growth, skills, creativity and applied understanding now count An EE says: “This learner didn’t just pass. They demonstrated mastery.” That is a profound change. For parents, it demands unlearning old anxieties. For employers, it calls for new hiring lenses. For universities, it challenges outdated admissions filters. For society, it asks a deeper question: What does intelligence really look like? If we get this right, we will stop producing excellent exam sitters and start producing capable problem-solvers, innovators and citizens. Change is uncomfortable. But so was clinging to a system that left too many brilliant minds behind. The letter has changed. The meaning of excellence has evolved. Now our mindsets must catch up. EE is not the new A.     🚀 Are you teaching what you intend to teach, or are your students actually demonstrating what they’ve learned? Modern education is rapidly shifting from a teacher-centered approach to a student-centered, competency-based learning model. For educators, school leaders, and curriculum designers, understanding the correct sequence of instructional design is the foundation of effective teaching and meaningful learning. 1️⃣ Distinguish Learning Objectives from Learning Outcomes Before teaching begins, educators must clearly understand the difference between objectives and outcomes. • Learning Objectives are teacher-centered intentions that define what students should learn. They focus on instructional goals and are planned before teaching. • Learning Outcomes are student-centered achievements that define what learners can demonstrate after instruction. They focus on measurable performance and are evaluated after learning. 2️⃣ Design with SMART + ABCD Frameworks Effective objectives should be precise, measurable, and purposeful. Combine: • SMART Criteria — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound with • ABCD Model — Audience, Behavior, Condition, and Degree This ensures clarity, accountability, and strong instructional planning. 3️⃣ Integrate Bloom’s Taxonomy for Cognitive Rigor Learning should move beyond rote memorization. While Remembering, Understanding, and Applying are foundational, educators must intentionally design experiences that promote: • Analyzing • Evaluating • Creating This develops HOTS (Higher-Order Thinking Skills) and deeper conceptual understanding. 4️⃣ Use the Objective Writing Formula Avoid vague verbs such as “know” or “understand.” Instead, frame objectives using: [Students will be able to] + [Action Verb] + [Content] + [Criteria] 5️⃣ Implement Constructive Alignment Effective teaching happens when every component of instruction is interconnected and aligned. Learning Objectives → Teaching Strategies → Learning Activities → Assessment → Learning Outcomes When this alignment is maintained, classrooms become more purposeful, measurable, and impactful. 6️⃣ Align with NEP 2020 and CBSE Competency-Based Education A constructively aligned classroom naturally supports: • Experiential Learning • Skill-Based Education • Application-Oriented Teaching • Competency Development 7️⃣ Audit for Common Curriculum Design Mistakes Before implementation, educators should review their planning for common gaps: ⚠️ Use of non-measurable verbs ⚠️ Objectives without assessment alignment ⚠️ Overloaded outcomes ⚠️ Excessive focus on rote memorization ⚠️ Lack of student-centered performance indicators Education becomes transformational when we shift the focus from “What are we teaching?” to “What are students actually able to do?” #CurriculumDesign #LearningOutcomes #NEP2020 #CompetencyBasedEducation #InstructionalDesign #21stCenturySkills #TeachersOfLinkedIn #BloomTaxonomy

    How Do We Know That Our Dental Students Are Competent and Ready to Perform Certain Procedures on Patients? Having been in dental education for over three decades, I frequently ask myself: “Is this dental student ready to prepare a crown for this patient?” or “Is this resident ready to perform a full-mouth rehabilitation?” These are critical questions that define the safety and quality of care our students provide. Systematically, we rely on competencies and assessments to evaluate whether a learner—whether a predoctoral student or a resident—is ready to perform specific patient care procedures. However, dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all discipline, and different procedures require different benchmarks for competency. For example: • A student learning crown preparation might require six to eight or more practice attempts on a typodont before demonstrating competency. • Intraoral scanning might require three to five attempts on live patients to become efficient. • Tooth polishing, a simpler procedure, may only require one or two practice sessions before competency is achieved. Thus, applying a uniform competency threshold across all procedures can be misleading. If a program uses a rigid numerical requirement (e.g., “X number of procedures = competency”), it risks shifting the focus away from true skill development and progression. Instead of promoting growth and refinement of skills, it creates a checkbox mentality where the learner and faculty may mistakenly assume that completing a fixed number of cases equates to readiness. The Case for Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) A more effective way to assess readiness is through Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA)—a framework that evaluates a learner’s ability to independently perform a task based on real-world observation rather than just a predefined number of attempts. EPAs consider: • The context of the procedure • The student’s decision-making process • The complexity of the case • The supervising faculty’s confidence in the learner’s ability to perform the task safely and effectively This approach shifts the focus from just completing a requirement to demonstrating competency in a dynamic, patient-centered way. How Should We Implement This? 1. Define clear EPA guidelines for key procedures that align with patient safety and clinical complexity. 2. Encourage progressive assessment, allowing students to develop skills at their own pace while ensuring readiness at every stage. 3. Integrate faculty calibration so that evaluators consistently assess readiness and entrustability. 4. Use technology and data analytics to track skill progression beyond just a number of completed procedures. Ultimately, competency in dental education should not be about rigid numerical thresholds but about ensuring that students are truly entrustable to perform patient care with confidence, skill, and safety. #DentalEducation #CompetencyBasedEducation #EntrustableProfessionalActivities

    Forget Carnegie units and credit hours.  Districts are moving toward competency-based models that prioritize skills over seat time, and the transformation is happening faster than expected. Aldine ISD Independent School District in Texas launched HEAL high school programs in partnership with Memorial Hermann Health System. Students pursue nursing, rehabilitation, pharmacy, imaging, or administration pathways with paid internships starting junior year. The Northeast Academy for Aerospace & Advanced Technologies and Advanced Technologies in North Carolina graduates one-third of students with two-year degrees already completed. They receive four applications for every open seat. These aren't isolated experiments. The Carnegie Arts Center Foundation, Turlock's Future of High School Network just launched with 24 districts from across the country, all working to establish a "new architecture" for high schools that measures competencies instead of class time. "There is really broad scale recognition that the current design for the American high school isn't meeting the needs of young people," says Timothy Knowles, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching president. The shift creates opportunities across multiple markets: competency assessment platforms, industry partnership management tools, and alternative credentialing systems. Districts need technology that can track skills acquisition across work-based learning experiences, not just traditional classroom metrics.

Am I fully aware of the competencies that CBSE now expects us to assess in our learners? 2. Am I adequately equipped to design a question paper with 80% competency-based questions? 3. Am I confident in drafting questions that truly assess critical thinking, analysis, and application in my learners? 4. Do I have a clear understanding of the difference between rote-based and competency-based assessment? How do I ensure that my classroom practices support this transition beyond just examination patterns? 5. Have I integrated skill-based learning and real-world contexts into my day-to-day teaching to prepare students for such assessments? 6. What professional development or peer collaboration do I need to strengthen my ability to frame, evaluate, and grade competency-based questions effectively? 7. How do I create a classroom environment that encourages inquiry, reasoning, and problem-solving rather than memorization? 8. Are my teaching strategies inclusive enough to address the diverse learning styles, multiple intelligences, and the needs of CWSN who coexist in my classroom? 9. Finally, as a teacher, how can I become a facilitator of deeper learning, ensuring my students are not just exam-ready, but future-ready? As we adapt to this shift, professional development, peer collaboration, and reflective practice become essential. Ultimately, this transformation is not just about changing the pattern of assessment, but about preparing our learners — and ourselves — for a more thoughtful, inclusive, analytical, and application-oriented future.     📚 Teaching Approaches: CBA vs CLT vs TBLT 1️⃣ CBA (Competency-Based Approach) 🎯 Focus: Learners’ competencies — what they can do with language in real life. 📝 Lesson goals: “Can-do” statements (e.g., “Students can ask for directions politely”). 🎭 Assessment: Performance-based (role plays, projects, tasks). ✅ Strength: Practical, measurable, tied to real-world use. ⚠️ Weakness: Can become too checklist-like and rigid, focusing on outcomes more than process. 2️⃣ CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) 💬 Focus: Communication as the central goal of learning. 🗣️ Lesson goals: Improving fluency and interaction in meaningful contexts, not just accuracy. 👥 Classroom activities: Group work, pair discussions, info gap activities, role plays. 🌟 Strength: Encourages natural use of language, boosts confidence, promotes talk time. ⚠️ Weakness: Fluency may be prioritized over accuracy → grammar gaps may remain. 3️⃣ TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) 🛠️ Focus: Learning through tasks (real-world/problem-solving activities). 📑 Lesson structure: 🔹 Pre-task (prepare students with key input) 🔹 Task cycle (students complete a communicative task) 🔹 Language focus (reflect & analyze language used) 🎯 Assessment: Success of completing the task (e.g., planning a trip, making a poster, solving a problem). 🌟 Strength: Engaging, integrates skills, mirrors real-life communication. ⚠️ Weakness: Needs scaffolding; students may struggle if the task is too difficult. 🔑 How they differ in simple terms: 🟨 CBA → Outcome-oriented (competence checklist). 🟦 CLT → Communication-oriented (interaction/fluency). 🟩 TBLT → Task-oriented (tasks as the learning engine). 👉 In Short: ✅ CBA: What learners can do at the end. 💬 CLT: Using language to communicate. 🛠️ TBLT: Learning through doing tasks.

    Here's my alternative grading scheme, in a nutshell. *************************** 1️⃣ No grades on individual assignments. All assignments get a Complete or an Incomplete. To get a Complete, the work must hit the learning objective. If a student gets an Incomplete, I want them to try again. (I borrow heavily from the edit-to-mastery assignments, which allows students to continue improving and submit content as they go along.) --- 2️⃣ To show their competency in a particular skill, they must get a certain number of Completes. To show that they can work with others, they need to get Completes in 90% of the collaborative exercises. To show that they can implement a writing process, they need to get Completes on 90% of the process clusters. (No one-and-done essays.) And so on... Hitting the competencies gives them a B. This approach combines competency-based grading (where students can prove that they're moving towards competency/mastery with a good success rate) and the Grading Contract approach laid out by Asao Inoue and others. --- 3️⃣ To get higher than a B, students design and complete their own passion projects. If they get a Complete on 1 and hit the competencies, they get a B+. If they get Completes on 2 and hit the competencies, they get an A. *************************** I've combined what I like most from competency-learning, labor-based grade contracts, and edit-to-mastery assignments into a single system. No one-and-done or two-and-done essays. Instead, I give process clusters. No As, Bs, Cs, Ds, or Fs. Instead, I give "Completes" and "Try Agains." This also allows me to check off competencies as we go along, to make sure I'm aligning things with broader institutional goals even without grades.
