MIT CAREER ADVISING GUIDE: Google it. Free PDF with excellent examples. INDEED RESUME GUIDE: Industry-specific examples on their website. YOUR ACTION PLAN Pick a template from the free builders Write your resume following Harvard or MIT structure Run it through Jobscan or Resume Worded against a real job posting Adjust based on feedback and add missing keywords Get human feedback from Reddit, your library, or your college Revise again This takes 10-15 hours from scratch. You can't shake a stick here on LinkedIn without bashing it into at least twelve people selling resume writing services. Sure, some of them are scammers — ignore them. But what if you actually 𝘢𝘳𝘦 in the market for a resume writer? How do you decide who can help you vs. who's going to take your money and run? 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫: ⤵ ✔ 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: You want someone who not only knows how to write, but understands the audience for whom they're writing. A recruiter has seen countless resumes, screened thousands of candidates, and likely pored over resumes with hundreds of hiring managers. You'll benefit from this expertise. ✔ 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲: Avoid resume writers who promise a way to "get past the ATS" or "beat the bots." If that's their sales pitch, chances are high they've never actually seen the inside of an ATS or worked as a recruiter. And chances are even higher that they're going to say whatever they can to make a buck. Be wary of anyone who claims to 𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘦 a specific result; a resume is only a small part of the overall job search process. ✔ 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: A good resume writer should be willing to work with you, not just for you. Whether that's speaking live to gather details of your experience, going back and forth on final updates and edits, or just being available to answer questions, you want someone who is there to partner with you. ✔ 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: As with any service provider, you want to hear about others' experiences. Look for positive testimonials or reviews. You should also be able to look at samples of the writer's work if you ask. If you can't find any of these things or any other evidence of this person's experience (a website, portfolio, LinkedIn profile), be wary. ✔ 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Experience recruiting for or working in your industry isn't a requirement, but it can be helpful, especially for very specialized industries. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫?  🚫 Certifications or association memberships 🚫 Location, as long as they're familiar with the professional and cultural norms in your country 🚫 Cost: Okay, hear me out. Of course price 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, but it doesn't necessarily 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 anything about the writer's skills. $500 resume writer or AI? 🤔 After reviewing 1000s of resumes, here's my honest take: The resume help industry is wild.  From $99 templates to $1000+ consultants, everyone promises the perfect resume. But here's what actually matters: ✅ HIRE A PROFESSIONAL RESUME WRITER IF: 1️⃣ You're targeting senior roles ($150K+) • Complex achievements need expert framing • ROI justifies the investment • Stakes are higher for executive positions 2️⃣ You're making a major career pivot • Need help translating skills across industries • Require strategic positioning guidance 3️⃣ You've been searching 6+ months without traction • Fresh perspective can identify blind spots • Sometimes you're too close to see issues 4️⃣ You struggle to articulate your value • Some people genuinely need that outside voice • Writing about yourself is legitimately hard 🤖 USE AI TOOLS (ChatGPT, Teal, etc.) IF: 1️⃣ You have a clear career trajectory • AI excels at optimizing straightforward paths • Less strategic positioning needed 2️⃣ You need help with phrasing and structure • AI transforms rough ideas into polished content • Great for overcoming writer's block 3️⃣ You're early to mid-career • Simpler stories to tell • AI can handle standard progressions well 4️⃣ You're willing to edit heavily • AI provides the foundation, you add authenticity • Think of it as a collaborative tool ⚠️ THE TRAPS TO AVOID: • Cheap services ($99-199) using basic templates + ChatGPT   → You're paying for what you could do yourself • Ultra-expensive services ($800+) promising guaranteed interviews   → No resume alone lands jobs; it's one piece of the puzzle 💡 THE SMART MIDDLE PATH: 1. Use AI for your first draft 2. Customize heavily based on each role 3. Have a senior colleague in your field review it 4. 10 questions to ask a résumé writer If you are considering hiring a professional résumé writer, you might be asking for referrals, reading profiles, and asking about cost. Hiring a professional is a huge decision, whether you are not getting interviews or are in the early stages of planning your next career move. You need to do your research. 🔍 At some point, the professional résumé writer might invite you for a consultation call. You might be concerned about the writer trying to sell you something or being aggressive. This is far from the truth! A consultation call is an opportunity to learn more about the service, to build a relationship, and to determine fit. Here are ten questions to ask: 📌 What does your service include? Every résumé writer offers different features in the service. Some write résumés. Other writers include a cover letter and a mock interview. 📌 What training or certifications do you have? You don’t need a certification to write a good résumé. There are recruiters, career services professionals, and hiring managers who read thousands of résumés every year. However, a certification in the industry shows that the writer has completed rigorous training. 📌 How do you stay current in the industry? Ideally, a professional résumé writer should attend conferences and workshops. 📌 What is your process? What can I expect? Every writer has a different process. They approach the work in unique ways. 📌When can I expect the first draft? Timelines vary. Does the writer share the first draft in three days? Or, does the writer share it in 10 days? Does the writer work on weekends? How many days do you have to request revisions? 📌 What materials do you need before starting the order? Will the writer need a copy of your current résumé? Or, will the writer meet with you to get the details? 📌 How many revisions do you do? This is important because some résumé writers do one or two revisions before completing the order. Others will work on the revisions until they provide the best work possible. 📌Can you show me some samples of your work? It is your right to see some samples. Ask the person to meet with you and show you the samples. 📌Can you share testimonials from former clients? I know wonderful résumé writers who don’t have a lot of testimonials. They are busy getting the work done or are too shy to ask for testimonials. If the writer has testimonials, read them and identify patterns. 📌How much does your service cost? This should be the last question you ask. Why? Because the price doesn’t mean anything if you don’t understand what the service includes and what it can do for you. Free vs. Paid Résumé Services for Veterans: Which One Will Actually Land You the Job? Short answer: Both If you’re a transitioning service member, writing a civilian résumé can feel like speaking an entirely different language. So, should you stick with free resources, or invest in a paid résumé service? Let’s break down the differences. 💻 Free Resources: Pros: Cost-free, peer support, basic guidance from VA, TAP, or nonprofits. Cons: Limited personalization, inconsistent quality, and you handle most of the heavy lifting when it comes to customizing it. . 💰 Paid Services: Pros: Industry pros optimize your résumé to help it parse better onto the ATS, tailor it to your career goals, and polish it until it shines. Cons: It can cost $100-$3000+ varying from new graduate to C-suite roles, and not every service delivers top-notch results so you MUST do your own research before you part with your hard earned money because unfortunately, there are scammers with no resume writing or recruiting experience trying to take advantage of people. Run from anyone promising you'll land a job if you buy their resume services as jobs are not guaranteed and the purpose of a resume is to get you an interview NOT a job; you still have to network and crush the interview. Always ask what they offer with their resume packages and if they have flat fees or whether they charge any additional fees as some will charge per page, per hour, per revision, etc. depending on their business model and what industry/niche they specialize in. 👉 So which is better? Free services are great for general roles, but if you’re targeting competitive fields or leadership positions, paid services could give you that extra edge. Bottom Line: No matter which route you choose, make sure your résumé translates your military experience into civilian-friendly language. Because let’s face it, “NCOIC of COIN ops” doesn’t exactly scream “Operations Manager” on a civilian résumé and most recruiters have never served in the military, so you'll simply confuse them and they'll unfortunately pass on your resume. Additionally, don't let anyone make you feel bad for using free resources or fee-based services. The end goal is to turn your résumé into a recruiter magnet, so only you know what is best for you, your budget, and what will get you to your goal faster. People say I charge a high amount for resume writing. I smile. It’s like looking at an M.F. Husain painting and saying, "Why does this cost ₹2 crore? He made it in just 5 minutes." Yes — it took him 5 minutes. But it also took him 50 years to be able to paint like that in 5 minutes. And that’s what people often forget. A veteran came to us with 22 years of Army logistics. Combat deployments. Supply chain operations at scale. Teams spread across three theaters. His resume said none of that. Vetting a Resume Writing Firm? Before you hand over your hard-earned money, ask these questions 👇 1/ May I see industry-relevant resume samples? This helps you gauge whether they understand your field. ⚠️ CAUTION: Scammers scrape real writers’ samples. Do a quick reverse image search to confirm the samples aren’t stolen. 2/ What is your process? Every writer has a different approach; make sure it fits your communication style. For example: 👉 I conduct 90-minute deep-dive Zoom sessions to uncover achievements, metrics, and goals. Others may rely solely on worksheet data dumps, which often miss the nuance behind your story. ⚠️ CAUTION: If their process sounds rushed or generic, you’ll likely get a rushed or generic result. 3/ Can you provide testimonials? Authentic firms proudly share client wins. ⚠️ CAUTION: Fake reviews are everywhere. Look for video testimonials, or verify LinkedIn recommendations by reviewing the profiles of the people who wrote them. 4/ Who actually writes my resume? I have a team of 4 certified master writers, graphic designers, proofreaders, and write myself. Who will be supporting you is based on your needs. ⚠️ CAUTION: Those $179 resume mills often offshore the work to writers producing 3–7 resumes per day using templates and AI prompts (& only pay them $10/resume!) It’s volume-based, not value-based.
