A few roles stood out to me immediately, not just because they’re growing, but because of why they’re growing. 1. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 / 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫 This is the most important signal on the list. AI is no longer just a technical problem. It’s a leadership problem. Companies don’t need more models. They need people who can decide: →where AI should be used →where it shouldn’t →and how it changes workflows, accountability, and decision-making Execution without judgment will be the biggest risk of the next decade. 2. The rise of AI engineering roles is not just about demand, it’s about timing. A large proportion of people currently working in AI-related roles are new to the field. That matters. It means the barrier to entry is still relatively open, and career transitions are not only possible, but realistic for those willing to learn and adapt. From my perspective in digital engineering and infrastructure, I see a similar shift happening closer to home. Pure “tool-based” digital roles are maturing. What’s growing instead are Information Management roles and positions that sit at the intersection of technology, strategy, and organisations. The opportunity is no longer just in being good at BIM or digital delivery, but in expanding into: • Strategic Digital Transformation • Organisational Digital Transformation • AI- and automation-augmented BIM and information workflows In other words, moving from producing models to shaping how information supports decision-making, governance, and long-term value. The common thread across the fastest-growing roles is not a single skill or platform. It’s the ability to combine domain expertise with new technologies, understand change at an organisational level, and keep learning in public. There are more rocket ships. Google's CEO Eric Schmidt once offered this wise advice to Sheryl Sandberg when she was pondering joining the company: “When offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask which seat. Just get on.” His point was pretty clear—when you have the chance to join an organization or industry with tremendous momentum, your exact role is less important than simply finding a seat onboard. Things seemed to work out fairly well for Sheryl. Lately, I've been speaking with many talented professionals who are currently looking for their next role. Many are following Eric's advice and aspire to join the most prominent AI "rocket ships" like OpenAI, Nvidia, Anthropic, or Google. These companies seem to offer exciting opportunities, great compensation and strong resume brand value. Yet, as appealing as these AI powerhouses are, competition for their limited seats is obviously fierce. Most applicants and interviewees simply won't secure a spot on these particular rocket ships. This is just a quick reassuring reminder that there are many other rocket ships. A handful of other high-growth industries to consider include: - Climate tech - Renewable energy - Healthcare tech and biotech - Fintech - Cloud computing Cybersecurity Importantly, don’t underestimate the value of companies outside these high-profile industries. Lots of less-visible companies possess traits that can significantly accelerate your career, offering substantial opportunity and growth. Some "high-opportunity" company characteristics to look for: - Strong L&D cultures: Organizations with a track record of commitment to their employees' growth via structured training, certifications, or educational reimbursements ensure continuous professional development. - Impressive alumni outcomes: Firms whose alumni regularly advance into leadership, entrepreneurial roles, or investment positions indicate exceptional career-launching environments. - Cross-functional exposure: Companies that enable collaboration across multiple departments can enhance your versatility and marketability. - Global presence: International companies often offer broad networks, cultural fluency, and expansive career opportunities. (And travel!) - Industry disruption potential: Businesses actively reshaping their industries often provide uniquely accelerated learning opportunities. (Note: There's lots of opportunity to learn and apply AI to disrupt industries.) - Access to leadership: Smaller or flatter organizations allow direct interaction with senior executives, accelerating your learning and advancement. 🔮 Anyone got a crystal ball handy? This week's edition of Pondering Careers is about the future of work (and AI, of course) with the hope that it will be useful for some other tech-phobes like me. I wrote this because the future of work is full of exciting, innovative technology, and if we are going to have positive career conversations with young people then we also need to feel confident that we understand what it is and what it does (if not how it works - now is probably a good time to mention that Rob once had to explain to me that the 'cloud' wasn't actually in the clouds...) With that context, in this article I share some ideas for what the future of work might look like, and give you a basic intro to these emerging industries: 🤖 Generative AI creates new content like text, images, and code, reshaping how people work in marketing, programming, and education, but still needs human oversight and critical thinking. ⚙️ Robotics & Automation uses physical machines that work autonomously in manufacturing, logistics, and agriculture, creating demand for people who can design, programme, and maintain these systems. 🌐 Internet of Things (IoT) connects everyday devices from fitness trackers to smart thermostats, requiring technicians to maintain sensor networks and analysts to interpret the data. 👥 Digital Twins & Simulations create virtual replicas of physical systems to run predictions, from testing medical treatments to stress-testing infrastructure before construction. 🥽 Extended Reality (XR) includes virtual and augmented reality for medical training, architecture, and education, requiring creators who combine technical skills with domain expertise. 🏭 Advanced Manufacturing uses 3D printing and high-tech methods to create aerospace components, prosthetics, and construction materials, requiring technicians and engineers who translate digital designs into physical products. 🧬 Biotechnology uses biology and genetics to create personalised medicine, pest-resistant crops, and gene therapies, requiring workers who combine data analysis, scientific knowledge, and ethical reasoning. ⚡ Clean Energy & Storage integrates renewable power and builds EV infrastructure, creating massive demand for electricians, engineers, and environmental specialists to handle the energy transition. 🕵️ Cybersecurity combines IT with ethics and compliance, as well as deep critical thinking skills, and is needed in healthcare, education, finance, government - basically everywhere. 🔗 Web3 & Decentralised Systems use blockchain to give people control of their own data and assets, showing up in microcredentials and property transfers, requiring skills in ethics, compliance, and legal frameworks.
