    Should we remove technology from the classroom? There’s a growing conversation happening, especially among educators, about whether tablets and tech in the classroom are doing more harm than good. Teachers are seeing students zoned out, struggling with attention, and missing key foundational skills. And I get it. As a former teacher and a parent, I’ve seen how too much screen time can impact kids’ focus, behavior, and even emotional regulation. But the answer isn’t to remove technology. It’s to get more intentional with how we teach it. What if we brought back something a lot of us millennials grew up with: 𝐀 𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦. Back then, we learned: How to type and format documents How to research and cite sources How to email professionally How to navigate file systems and save our work Today, we assume kids will pick all of this up through osmosis. But it’s clear there’s a growing tech skills gap, one that’s only going to widen as tech evolves faster than ever. A modern digital literacy class could build from the basics and expand into: ✅ Writing effective AI prompts ✅ Thinking critically about tech outputs ✅ Combining human creativity with digital tools ✅ Exploring how tech is used in different careers ✅ Understanding ethics, privacy, and digital responsibility and safety At the same time, we should protect screen-free time in core subject areas like math, science, reading, and writing, giving kids space to develop foundational thinking without constant screen time. This isn’t about banning technology. It’s about separating foundational learning from screen time, while still giving students the skills and understanding they’ll need to thrive in a tech-driven world.     Digital Literacy and Digital Mastery are entirely different things. You don't need mastery to be Digitally literate and have a Digital Mindset. All you need is 30% competency in a handful of Technical topics. Tsedal Neeley and Paul Leonardi have created this amazing framework ---The 30% Rule to Digital Literacy, in their book “The Digital Mindset”. Here is what it means. To build a Digital Mindset, you need to have 30% competency in three areas — Collaboration, Computation, and Change. 1/ Collaboration: The first element is to learn how to collaborate with the Machines. For instance, how do you collaborate with AI tools to make yourself and your organization more productive? Building enough knowledge to be able to confidently speak about technology and what it can unlock for your organization. Then how do you interact and innovate using technology? This requires only 30% knowledge of different ML and AI techniques. 2/ Computation: Understand 30% of how technology is collecting, categorizing, consuming, and storing the data. This means basic knowledge of different data analyses and statistical measures. You don’t need to become a statistician, but knowing what different terminologies mean when presented, will make you more confident in making data-driven decisions. 3/ Change: In the context of Digital Transformation, adapting to change is vital. How do you create a culture of change, experimentation, and psychological safety to drive digital adoption in your organization? Again you don’t need to become a project and change management expert, but understanding and acknowledging what is needed to support a culture of change is the key here. 🌐 The beauty of the 30% rule is that it simplifies digital literacy making it an achievable goal for anyone willing to invest in their digital skills. Remember, it's not about mastering every digital tool or trend but about being competent and confident enough to navigate the digital aspects of our world.     I know I say this often but technology is no longer a separate sphere that sits alongside our lives, it has become the backbone of how we live, how we learn, how we work and how we connect with one another. Every career path, every opportunity for growth and every interaction with society is now touched by a digital layer that cannot be ignored (or if you attempt to ignore it, it will find you eventually). Yet millions of people remain excluded from this reality because they lack digital literacy. This absence is not just a matter of missing skills, it is a fundamental rights issue. When individuals cannot navigate the digital world with confidence, they are shut out of opportunities to progress, unable to properly protect their own data and left with little or no voice in shaping the very technologies that increasingly govern their futures. The future of work will only amplify this divide. Artificial intelligence, automation and global collaboration are already transforming entire industries at a pace that few of us can fully grasp. Those who have digital fluency will be able to adapt, retrain and thrive but those who do not will find themselves excluded from the jobs, the networks and the influence that will define the decades ahead. If we are serious about preparing for the future of work, we must start treating digital literacy as we once treated reading and writing. It should not be viewed as an optional advantage but something that everyone deserves access to. It is the foundation upon which lifelong learning, career resilience and meaningful participation in society must be built. However this cannot be the responsibility of a single sector; schools cannot do it alone, businesses cannot simply outsource it and governments cannot legislate it into existence without collaboration. Building digital confidence for all requires a collective commitment, where every organisation, every leader and every community recognises the role they play in creating inclusive and accessible spaces for digital learning. The future of work cannot be designed for a select few who happen to be digitally fluent, it must be accessible to the many, grounded in the principle that opportunity in the digital age is not a privilege but a right.

    We've allowed today's students to speed along the information superhighway without so much as a driver's permit. True, today's students operate digital devices with astonishing fluency. But operating devices doesn't mean they have the tools to evaluate the information these devices offer. This challenge has intensified. AI systems are designed to be persuasive, not accurate. They mash up information and generate citations to articles that don't exist. Students need to understand: there is no such thing as free floating information. Information comes from somewhere. That somewhere needs to be checked. Philosopher Michael Lynch wrote that the internet is "both the world's best fact checker and the world's best bias confirmer—often at the same time." We must cultivate students' critical thinking. But in an age where we turn to a screen to learn about the world, the first step of critical thinking is to determine if something is worthy of thinking critically about.     In 1995, we taught kids not to trust strangers online. In 2024, we need to teach them not to trust everything that looks or sounds human online. The reality? AI isn't just another tech trend. It's reshaping how information is created, shared, and consumed. While I learned how to identify credible websites when I was in school, today's kids need to master something far more nuanced: distinguishing between authentic human content and AI-generated material. Here's a framework I use to teach digital discernment in an AI world: 1. Understanding Information Sources🔍 Ask: “Where did this info come from? Who created the original content?” ➡️ Lesson: AI pulls from vast sources with mixed reliability—encourage kids to question the origin instead of taking everything at face value. 2. Evaluating Credibility and Bias 🎯 Ask: “Why do I trust this answer? Could it be biased?” ➡️ Lesson: AI can mirror biases from the internet or even its programmers. Show kids how different sources might bring different truths. 3. Distinguishing Fact from Opinion ⚖️ Ask: “Is this a fact or an opinion?” ➡️ Lesson: Help kids recognize the difference so they’re not misled by a confident answer that’s really just one perspective. By equipping our kids with these critical thinking skills, we're not just teaching them to navigate AI - we're preparing them to thrive in a world where digital literacy will become as fundamental as reading and writing.
