Summary

Career goal adjustment is the process of reevaluating and realigning your professional ambitions to match your current needs, values, and circumstances. It involves making changes to your plans or objectives in response to new information, life changes, or evolving interests, ensuring your career path continues to bring satisfaction and growth.

  • Revisit your vision: Regularly reflect on where you want your career to lead, making sure your goals are still relevant and motivating for your future self.
  • Focus on actionable steps: Break down your revised goals into specific tasks you can control, like learning new skills or networking, rather than relying on external factors.
  • Evaluate and adapt: Periodically assess your progress and be open to changing direction if your priorities shift or new opportunities arise.

"You're standing at a career crossroads." The path ahead feels foggy. Sarah sat across from me. Her face covered in anxiety. She had two job offers. Both looked amazing on paper. But she was paralyzed with fear. Her dream felt miles away. I asked her one question: "What did you want five years ago?" She went silent. Because she realized something shocking. Her goals had completely changed. And nobody told her that's okay. Here's how we recalibrated her entire career: Step 1: The Long-Term Vision Check I made her write this down: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Not where society wants you. Not where your parents expect you. Where do YOU want to be? Sarah wrote: Leading a remote team. Building products that matter. Living near the ocean. This clarity changed everything. Step 2: The Brutal Honesty Test Now came the hard part. I asked her to compare both offers. Against her 10-year vision. Offer A: High salary, corner office, 70-hour weeks Offer B: Moderate pay, full remote, growth potential She created two columns: PROS and CONS for each. But here's the twist. I made her rate each pro and con. On a scale of 1 to 10. Based on her long-term vision. Not on what looked impressive. The results shocked her. Offer A scored 4 out of 10. Offer B scored 8 out of 10. Step 3: The Decision Framework Sarah still hesitated. So, I gave her my secret weapon. The 3-Question Test: Question 1: Does this move me closer to my vision? Question 2: Will I learn skills I actually need? Question 3: Can I sustain this for 2+ years? If you answer NO to any question. Walk away. No matter how tempting it looks. Sarah chose Offer B. Six months later? She's thriving. Working from a beach town. Leading a small team. Building products she loves. Here's what most people miss: Career crossroads aren't obstacles. They're opportunities to recalibrate. But you need a system. Not just gut feelings. Not just advice from others. A real framework that works. Your career landscape will shift. Again, and again and again. The question isn't IF you'll face crossroads. The question is: Will you be ready? Most people wait too long. They ignore the signs. They stay stuck. They wake up five years later. Filled with regret. Don't be that person. Start your recalibration today. Write down your 10-year vision. Compare it to your current path. Be brutally honest. Make the hard choices. Your future self will thank you. The crossroads you're facing right now? It's your biggest opportunity. But only if you act. Stop waiting for permission. Stop seeking validation. Trust your recalibrated vision. And move forward with confidence. "The only way to do great work is to love what you do, and the only way to love what you do is to ensure it aligns with who you're becoming." P.S. What's one career goal you've recently recalibrated? Drop it in the comments.

"'I Want to Make 5X More' – Why This Goal Won't Get You There One of the common challenge my ambitious clients face is the desire to significantly increase their income—whether it's 2X, 3X, 5X, or even 10X their current income. The key to unlocking these BIG goals lies in how we frame them right from the start. Your goals must be under YOUR control. Setting goals that others control leads to: 🛑 Powerlessness: You rely on others, not yourself. 🛑 Low Motivation: Obstacles easily derail you. 🛑 Blame Game: You don't own your results. 🛑 Stress & Anxiety: Uncertainty takes over. 🛑 Wasted Effort: You focus on influencing others, not yourself. So, how do we transform the desire for a 'multiple-X income' into a goal YOU can control and achieve? Here are a few examples of how to reframe your goals: 👉 Upskill: "I will master [specific, in-demand skill] to command top salaries in the industry." 👉Network Strategically: "I will connect with [number] influential people in my industry each month to expand my horizons and discover new strategies and opportunities." 👉Exceed Expectations: "I will consistently go above and beyond at work and seek new challenges to be considered for the next promotion." 👉Build a Side Hustle: "I will create a side business to generate [amount] of additional income." 👉Become Financially Savvy: "I will educate myself on personal finance and investment strategies to grow my wealth." By focusing on actions you can take, not on what others might do for you, you take control of your career journey and boost your chances of success. How much control do you have over the outcome of your current career goals? #careercoaching #goalsetting

Attention - Career pivot!? It is rather often that I receive direct messages from candidates asking for advice on how to manage a significant career pivot. Changing careers at a mature stage in life is a little like going on a very tall roller coaster - it can be both exciting and scary. Here are some thoughts to consider: ↝ 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Start by assessing your skills, interests, and values. Understand your strengths and what drives you. This self-awareness will guide you towards a career that aligns with the true you! ↝ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁-𝘂𝗽: Understand the financial implications of a career change. Determine how your income might be affected during the transition period and plan accordingly. In today`s environment it almost always takes longer than planned. ↝ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲: Take the time to learn about potential career directions. Look into industries that interest you and explore the job market demand, required skills, and educational or training pathways. Talk to real people to gain insights! Make sure that you take into consideration local market specifics. ↝ 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: Identify your skills or knowledge that can be transferred as well as gaps between your current experience and your desired career. Courses, certifications, or workshops can be helpful (and costly). ↝ 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Leverage your existing network and reach out to professionals in the new field. Networking can be critical in your decision making as well your eventual success. ↝ 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: If possible, gain practical experience in your new field through volunteering or internships. This can help you confirm you are on the right path; acquire hands-on experience and expand your network. ↝ 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Understand that changing careers may take time and effort. Consider adjusting your plans based on new information or opportunities that arise. ↝ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: Resilience on this journey will be critical. Job hunting and career changes are often challenging, but maintaining a positive mindset will increase your chances of success. ↝ 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁: Once you've made the change, periodically evaluate your career satisfaction and progress. Be open to making further adjustments if needed to ensure long-term fulfillment. ❓ Anything you would add? Any questions? ------------------------------------------------- Oh, hey there! Are your career goals SMART enough to succeed? I’ve seen countless professionals struggle with career stagnation, not because they lack ambition, but because their goals aren’t structured for success. The right structure turns intentions into actions, and that’s what drives real progress. Enter the SMART framework: ✅ Specific – Get clear on what you want and why it matters. ✅ Measurable – Define how you’ll track progress. ✅ Achievable – Stretch yourself, but keep it realistic. ✅ Relevant – Make sure it aligns with your bigger vision. ✅ Time-bound – Set a deadline to create urgency. Here’s how it works in action: ❌ “I want to get promoted soon.” ✅ “I will meet with my manager next month to outline a development plan, take on two high-impact projects, and improve my leadership skills to position myself for a promotion within the next 12 months.” ❌ “I need to network more.” ✅ “I will attend one industry event per quarter, post twice a month on LinkedIn about my expertise, and schedule five informational chats with professionals in my field over the next three months.” ❌ “I need to find a new job.” ✅ “I will apply to five targeted roles per week, optimize my LinkedIn profile by the end of the month, and schedule two networking conversations weekly to increase my chances of landing a role in the next 90 days.” What’s one SMART goal you’re working on right now? Let's make it happen!

Your Career Doesn’t Need Bigger Goals. It Needs Better Inputs. Most professionals plateau because they focus on the prize (the raise, the title, the status) instead of the specific activities that make those outcomes inevitable. If your goal requires "motivation" to happen, it’s a wish. If it’s a scheduled task, it’s a strategy. Here is how to upgrade your career goals for real leverage: 1. Influence Is Built Through Action, Not Titles ❌ Vague goal: “I want to be seen as a thought leader.” This gives you nothing to do on Monday morning. ✅ Practical input: “In every department meeting, I will bring one well-thought-out suggestion that improves a process, reduces risk, or saves time.” Why this works: People don’t grant influence because of ambition. They trust the person who consistently adds value where decisions are made. Influence grows when your presence makes the room better not when you ask for recognition. 2. The Value Shift ❌ Weak Goal: "I want to earn a 20% raise." ✅ Actionable Input: "I will take over the most 'expensive' problem my manager currently faces." Why this works: Compensation is a reflection of the problems you solve. Solve bigger problems, command a bigger check. 3. The Capability Shift ❌ Weak Goal: "I want to be more technical." ✅ Actionable Input: "I will spend 30 minutes every Tuesday morning learning one automation tool." Why this works: General "growth" is invisible. A new workflow that saves the team 4 hours a week is a promotion-level contribution. 4. The Visibility Shift ❌ Weak Goal: "I hope my hard work gets noticed." ✅ Actionable Input: "I will update my 'Value Log' every Friday with three measurable wins from the week." Why this works: When performance review season hits, the person with the data wins. Don't rely on your manager's memory. The "Career Leverage" Audit If your goal is stuck, run it through these three filters: 1. Can it be scheduled? (If it’s not on the calendar, it’s not a goal). 2. Is it measurable? (Did you do it or not? No "gray" area). 3. Does it reduce friction for others? (The most valuable employees make their boss's life easier). Example: Junior → Senior ❌ Common move: Work longer hours to prove dedication. → Result: burnout, little recognition. ✅ High-impact move: Document SOPs for key tasks. → Result: you show you can scale work, not just do it. When you make tasks replaceable, you make your leadership indispensable.

Professional growth isn’t about doing more. Prioritize, focus, and let your roadmap lead you forward. With endless free resources like YouTube tutorials and online courses, it's easy for learning paths—and our minds—to feel overwhelmed. Whenever my mentees ask for help creating their professional development roadmap, I guide them through these steps: 1) Define your short-term goal (6 months): → Want that promotion?  Write down skills you need right now—terminology you don’t fully grasp, conflict resolution strategies for team changes, or improved stakeholder communication. → Changing jobs?  Find 10 detailed job descriptions for roles you aspire toward. List skills you’re missing. Short-term goals are straightforward. They focus on immediate impact. 2) Set your mid-term goal (2-3 years): → Where do you see yourself professionally?  This timeframe is realistic yet distant enough for growth. → Align your short-term and long-term goals.  Are they connected? If not, identify why. Reconciliation is key. 3) Categorizing skills: I divide skills on your roadmap like this:  → Project management skills: Essential for leading and delivering.  → Expert skills: Standout capabilities like systems design or specific domain expertise (finance, healthcare, etc.).  → Market requirements: Certifications, language proficiency, or other must-haves for your dream role or market. Once categorized, prioritize. Use your goals as your compass. Professional growth isn’t about collecting ALL skills or certificates. It's about focusing on KEY ones that move you forward. Your roadmap is your guide, but remember: growth requires constant reassessment and adjustment.

You want to grow or switch your career, but where do you start? Here’s the truth: the first step to career growth is understanding the skills you currently possess which I call skill clarity. That’s where a Skill Audit comes in. Think of it as a career assessment to identify your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Let me guide you through it step by step 👇 1. Identify Your Current Skills • List all the skills you use in your current role or daily activities. • Include technical skills (e.g., data analysis, coding) and soft skills (e.g., communication, problem-solving). • Think about tasks you excel at or areas where others seek your support. 2. Align Skills with Your Career Goals • Ask yourself: What career path or role am I aiming for? • Research the skills required for that role. Look at job descriptions or LinkedIn profiles of professionals in similar positions. 3. Compare and Analyze the Gaps • Compare your current skill set to the skills needed for your desired role. • Highlight the gaps, these are the skills you need to learn or improve. 4. Take Action • Prioritize 1–2 key skills to focus on first. • Use resources like online courses, mentorship, books, or workshops to learn. • Practice these skills in your current role, through side projects, or volunteer opportunities. 5. Track Your Progress • Regularly update your skill audit to evaluate your progress. • Adjust your learning plan as needed to stay aligned with your career goals. Why this works: A skill audit gives you direction. Instead of guessing your next steps, you’ll have a clear plan for building the skills needed to grow in your career. Take a moment today to reflect on your skills, it’s your first step towards becoming the professional you aspire to be. What’s one skill you’re working on right now? Share in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you👇 #CareerGrowth #ProfessionalDevelopment #SkillAudit #GenzHR

At a certain point in your career, achievement stops being the problem. The real challenge? You might be operating with a blueprint that’s too small for who you’re becoming. You’ve outgrown the goals you once chased. The strategies that worked 5 years ago don’t fit the life you want now. Maybe the version of success that built your career won’t necessarily build your future. This is the tension leaders feel but few talk about: -You’re highly capable but increasingly unfulfilled. -You can still hit the targets, but you’re questioning if they matter. -You know how to 'win' but you're not sure it's a game you still want to play. This is where real transition work begins. This doesn't mean abandoning ambition. This is an opportunity to upgrade the blueprint you’re working from. Here’s how I got through and guide clients through this pivot: 1. Audit the Old Blueprint → What assumptions about success are you still carrying that no longer fit? → What strategies need an upgrade, not a rejection? 2. Design the Next Version of Success → What values, priorities, and visions need to drive your next chapter? → What’s non-negotiable moving forward? 3. Move Intentionally, Not Reactively → What’s one strategic adjustment you can make now to build toward alignment, not just achievement? Transitions are never accidents. They can be designed if you’re willing to re-architect your approach. You didn’t build your career by default, and your next chapter won't be built that way either. If you're reworking your blueprint, what’s one belief or strategy you’re ready to leave behind? #reframe#coaching
