I once thought career changes were just a fresh start. But I was wrong. Switching careers isn’t just a professional shift—it’s a small death of your old identity. That’s because every career shift isn’t just a step forward—it’s also the end of a chapter. You lose familiar routines, your professional identity, even a sense of belonging. We rush toward the next goal, burying our feelings under a pile of "new beginnings." But those unresolved emotions resurface as regret, doubt, or burnout. Here’s how to process career transitions like a pro: 1) Acknowledge the End ↳ Every career chapter deserves closure. Don’t rush past the emotions—acknowledge them. It’s okay to grieve what you’re leaving behind. 2) Extract the Lessons ↳ What did this role teach you about yourself, others, or life? List those lessons—they're the foundation of your next move. 3) Redefine Your Identity ↳ You’re not just your job title. Ask yourself: Who am I without this role? This question is key to discovering who you want to become. 4) Embrace the Uncertainty ↳ Transitions are messy, but uncertainty creates space for growth. Lean into it—it’s where breakthroughs happen. 5) Set a New Vision ↳ What’s your next chapter? Define your new direction, but keep it flexible—you’re evolving. 6) Celebrate the Courage ↳ Career changes aren’t easy. Recognize the bravery it takes to step into the unknown. 7) Build Your Support System ↳ No reinvention happens in isolation. Surround yourself with people who encourage your growth. 8) Take Small Step Forward ↳ You don’t need to have it all figured out. Small, consistent steps build momentum toward your next path. Take this challenge: ☑ Spend 20 minutes reflecting on what your past role meant to you. ☑ Write down 3 things you want to take forward and 3 things to leave behind. Career changes aren’t just professional—they’re personal. And like any transformation, they deserve time, care, and space. What’s one lesson from a past career chapter that stayed with you? 👉 If you’re considering a career change, here’s what I’ve learnt works.. In today's job market, teams are lean, expectations are high and hiring managers and rightly so are often looking for someone who can step in and make an impact quickly. That can make it more difficult to take a chance on someone who is pivoting into a new field, even when potential and drive is clearly there. I experienced this firsthand in 2019, when I made the decision to transition into HR as a Human Resources Generalist after a 15 year career in social work. On paper, I didn't have the direct experience and I was stepping into a new environment at a time when the team was already stretched. Looking back, they didn't have to take the chance on me. They could have hired someone with more relevant experience and a shorter ramp up time. I am sure those considerations came up, but they chose to invest in my potential, and I will always be incredibly grateful to the organization, the team and it's leaders for giving me that opportunity. It ultimately led me to a career path where I truly feel I belong. That experience was super enlightening on how I think about career transitions, and what it really takes to make one successfully. For anyone considering a career change, here are a few things that can make a real difference: 🔹 Take time to study and understand your transferable skills. Be clear on what you already do well and how that applies to the role you are targeting. 🔹 Invest in learning before the opportunity comes. Read, ask questions and take on stretch projects that bring you closer to the work you want to do. 🔹 Consider internal moves where possible. When people already know your work ethic and can see your potential, they may be more willing to support your transition. 🔹 Prepare thoroughly for interviews! Focus on what you DO have that is relevant, not what you are missing. 🔹 Address the gaps directly, acknowledge where your experience may not fully align, explain how your different perspective can add value. 🔹 Show genuine motivation and commitment. Curiosity, humility, and willingness to learn can go a long way when making a pivot. Career changes are absolutely possible but they require preparation, self awareness and the right opportunity at the right time. Have you ever made a career change, or are you thinking about one? Would love to hear your thoughts and experience. #careergrowth #careerdevelopment #recruiting #hiring #jobsearch #leadership #healthcare #careeradvice

Embracing Career Transitions: Staying Open to New Opportunities With more than 35 years as an executive recruiter guiding senior candidates through transitions, I’ve seen firsthand how career shifts—whether planned or unexpected—can lead to incredible growth. While every situation is unique, the emotions—uncertainty, hope, and resilience—are universal. Even if you’re content in your current role, staying open to new opportunities is key to long-term success. The best career moves often come when you least expect them, and being receptive to change can open doors to greater fulfillment, impact, and advancement. Navigating Transitions with Confidence & Embracing Possibilities 🔹 Adopt a Growth Mindset – Every transition is a chance to learn, evolve, and expand your skill set. Stay curious and open to new challenges. 🔹 Build & Maintain Your Network – Strong relationships create opportunities. Engage with peers, mentors, and industry leaders—even when you’re not actively searching. 🔹 Be Proactive, Not Reactive – Don’t wait for change to happen to you. Stay informed about industry trends, emerging roles, and potential career paths. 🔹 Reframe Uncertainty as Opportunity – Transitions can feel unsettling, but they often lead to unexpected and rewarding possibilities. 🔹 Stay Flexible & Open-Minded – The best opportunities may not look exactly like what you envisioned. Be willing to explore new industries, roles, or leadership paths. 🔹 Invest in Yourself – Whether through professional development, certifications, or personal growth, continuous learning keeps you prepared for whatever comes next. 🔹 Trust the Process – Career transitions take time. Celebrate small wins, stay patient, and remain confident that the right opportunity will come. The Bottom Line Your career is a journey, not a destination. Whether you’re actively seeking change or simply staying open to possibilities, embracing transitions with confidence can lead to greater success and fulfillment! #A/E #ExecutiveSearch #CareerGrowth #Leadership #Opportunities Let's talk: carol@themetznergroup.com

I’ve had four completely different careers. Every decade, I’ve stripped my life back to its core, reexamined my direction, and reimagined my purpose. With each reinvention, I’ve moved closer to the truth of who I am and to the work I believe I was made to do. Here are the four changes I’ve gone through: – Classical musician: Learned discipline, beauty, and the cost of perfection. – Economics professor: Studied human behavior through the lens of financial choice. – Think tank president: Led ideas with impact at a national scale. – Writer and teacher on happiness: Now I help others build lives of deep meaning. In our early careers, many of us chase fluid rewards: novel problems, fast wins, accolades, and advancement. But as we age, something shifts, and our minds start to change, our priorities evolve, and the rewards that once satisfied us begin to feel hollow. Research shows that as fluid intelligence fades, crystallized intelligence (the ability to teach, synthesize, and lead with wisdom) rises. But to access it, we have to let go of who we were and embrace who we’re becoming. By rebuilding with intention, you let go of the ego that says, “I can’t afford to change.” And listen instead to the voice that asks, “What am I being called to do next?”

A career pivot isn’t just a trendy buzzword—it’s a strategic shift that can redefine your professional trajectory, resilience, and fulfillment. A career pivot can involve switching industries, taking on a new role, or applying your existing skills in a different context. Unlike a total reset, a pivot builds on your experience while opening new doors. The world of work is changing faster than ever. According to a 2024 LinkedIn Workforce Report, 61% of professionals who made a career pivot in the last two years did so to escape burnout, pursue growth, or find more meaning. FACT: companies now value adaptability as much as expertise, and those who pivot effectively are more likely to thrive in uncertainty, avoid stagnation, and discover untapped potential. Here's how to embrace your career pivot: ✅ Listen to Your Inner Signals Persistent disengagement, boredom, or curiosity about something new are not flaws—they’re clues. Pay attention. ✅ Reframe Your Experience Your skills and achievements aren’t wasted in a pivot—they’re assets. Map out how your strengths translate to new opportunities. ✅ Expand Your Network Seek out people who are doing what interests you. Informational interviews and mentorship can reveal paths you never considered. ✅ Experiment Before You Leap Test the waters with side projects, volunteering, or contract work. Small steps build confidence and clarity. ✅ Invest in Learning Upskill through courses, certifications, or workshops relevant to your new direction. Lifelong learning is the pivot’s secret weapon. This is less about abandoning your past and more about evolving it. Don’t wait for a crisis to force your hand—proactively explore, experiment, and embrace change. The best time to pivot is when you feel the pull, not just when you hit a wall. Coaching can help; let's chat. | Joshua Miller #careeradvice #executivecoaching #professionaldevelopment

Embrace Your Unique Career Journey As I look back over my career, I’m struck by how the twists and turns—often unplanned—have shaped the path to where I am today. From my early days building systems at Acclaim Entertainment to leading security initiatives at AWS, each step taught me something invaluable. When I started as a developer, I could never have imagined that years later, I’d be working in national defence, cybercrime, and eventually cloud security. Each role, from my time at Microsoft to my work with the RAF Reserves and the National Crime Agency, added to my understanding of technology, security, and people. The key wasn’t about having a perfect plan but about building deep domain knowledge in areas I found fascinating. Over time, combining these diverse skills unlocked new opportunities I couldn’t have foreseen. Your career doesn’t need to follow a straight line. Each experience—whether it’s a lateral move, a change of industry, or a seemingly small project—contributes to your expertise. Sometimes, the most unexpected skills become the ones that set you apart. If there’s one piece of advice I’d share, it’s this: follow what excites you. Take time to dig deep into your interests, even if they seem niche or unrelated to your current role. Over time, these areas of expertise often overlap in surprising ways, giving you a unique perspective and opening doors to opportunities others can’t see. Success isn’t about fitting into someone else’s mould; it’s about building your own. Don’t be afraid to carve out your path. Embrace change, learn continuously, and have confidence in the value of your experiences. If you’re on your own winding career journey, share the crazy path you’ve been on and inspire others. #careers #aws #Security

In recent conversations with mid-career professionals across sectors, a consistent theme has surfaced… a unanimous sense of uncertainty. Technology shifts, evolving workforce models, and changing industry dynamics are redefining what work, careers, and growth look like, resulting in ambiguity, cognitive overload, and at times, stagnation. What clearly differentiates those navigating this well though, is ownership of their path ahead. As the “predictable corporate ladder” fades, the most resilient are choosing self-direction and are taking control. 1. They are pausing to understand deeply. Moving beyond the emotion and noise to identify structural shifts objectively and translating those insights for adjacent capabilities & plans for alternate scenarios. 2. They are embracing the “Squiggly Lines” (reference in letter below). Progress is rarely linear and one must be open to reinvent for a strategic reset. They are revisiting their value proposition & ways of working to stay relevant. And there is a critical balance. 3. Parallel paths should not translate into parallel pressure. Those doing this effectively are equally disciplined about managing cognitive load through prioritizing for impact, protecting time to pause and think, and creating focused space to build the skills that matter. This requires discipline and intentionality. For others in a similar space, know you are not alone.
