    Many young engineering professionals proudly list software as their “skills.” Civil 3D. Revit. BIM. CAD. MS Office. And the list goes on. But here’s the truth nobody tells you: Software is not a skill. It’s a tool. A means, not the mastery. Anybody can learn a tool. Not everyone can deliver a project. To put it in perspective, imagine a carpenter listing “Hammer. Nails. Drill. Jigsaw.” as his skill set. You’d laugh. Because tools don’t define the craftsman. The craft does. That’s exactly how employers and senior engineers see your CV when it’s just a list of software. It looks shallow. It looks generic. It tells them nothing about what you can actually do. If you want to stand out, reframe your skill set. Yes, list the software, but immediately follow it with what you can deliver using it. For example: Civil 3D – Road design and corridor modeling – Mass earthwork calculations – Site grading and land development – Drainage and stormwater systems – Sewer and pipe network design Now you’re not just a tool user. You’re a problem solver. A designer. An engineer who can execute. And here’s the final tip. -Remove every tool that has nothing to do with the role you want. Clarity sells. Relevance wins. Don’t show your tools. Show your craft.

    Every month, I review close to a hundred CVs from undergraduates. And here’s something many people don’t realise about how I assess talent: I 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 check the 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆. I 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 check the 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻. I 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 check the 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. None of that tells me who you are as an engineer. The only thing that 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 is your 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀—what you built, how you built it, and the 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 you chose. And this is where most CVs fall apart. 98 out of 99 rely on the same platforms: Arduino and ESP32. Basic boards. Beginner-level constraints. Predictable outcomes. But when someone shows work with Raspberry Pi, Jetson Nano, STM boards, or any real microprocessor-level platform, the difference is immediate. These candidates think deeper. Build smarter. Push themselves beyond the tutorial stage. And they’re the ones who almost always earn an internship or a job with us. It’s not that 𝗔𝗿𝗱𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗦𝗣𝟯𝟮 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴—𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀. But that’s exactly what they are: starting points. The industry expects more now. Your 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, not just basic experimentation. If you want to 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁, move into platforms that mirror real product environments. Show that you understand complexity, scalability, and actual engineering constraints.     I reviewed 50+ engineering CVs this weekend. 47 made the same fatal mistake in the first 10 seconds. They listed technologies instead of impact. What I saw: “Proficient in React, Node.js, Python, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes…” Cool. So are 10,000 other engineers. What actually gets interviews: “Built checkout flow that reduced cart abandonment by 23%, processing £2M additional revenue annually” “Migrated monolith to microservices, cutting deployment time from 4 hours to 12 minutes” “Reduced API response time by 67%, directly improving user retention metrics” Same engineer. Different story. The pattern: Top 1% engineers don’t lead with their toolbox. They lead with the problems they’ve solved and the business outcomes that resulted. Technologies are just the “how.” Outcomes are the “why you should care.” If you’re job hunting right now: Take 10 minutes. Rewrite your top 3 bullet points. Add a metric to each one. Not “Developed features” → “Developed X feature that achieved Y result” Your CV isn’t a skill inventory. It’s proof you can solve the problems this company has right now.     I've trained 10,000s of engineers - from developers in Brazil to Fortune100 teams in US to government employees in UK. These 8 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀: Here's the thing - AI is reshaping how we build and deploy software. But it's not replacing the engineers who have these skills. If you're a manager, you need to know what truly matters. And if you're an engineer, these are your career insurance. 1) 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀 ↳ Most engineers wait for perfect requirements. ↳ Top performers release fast and iterate based on actual user feedback. 2) 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 ↳ They don't just manage their calendar - they protect their focus. ↳ They say no to unnecessary meetings and protect deep work time. 3) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ↳ They translate technical complexity into clear language. ↳ No jargon. No waffle. Just clarity that aligns everyone on a team. 4) 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 ↳ They never stop asking "why is it built this way?" ↳ They question existing architectures and dig below the surface. 5) 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 ↳ Motivation disappears. Systems stay. ↳ They build habits that keep them shipping even on rough days. 6) 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 ↳ They break complex systems into understandable parts. ↳ They spot patterns others miss and make decisions with logic, not gut feel. 7) 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 ↳ Not everyone needs an MBA, but understanding the business impact of technical decisions is crucial. ↳ These engineers connect their work to actual valuable outcomes. 8) 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 ↳ Building trust across teams - dev, ops, security, product. ↳ They persuade without manipulation and get buy-in that moves projects forward. AI can generate code and automate deployments.
