Choosing a career after 12th feels like standing at a giant crossroad with 10 confusing signboards🤷♀️ Everyone’s shouting directions — parents, cousins, Sharma ji, and the neighbour who once cracked NEET in 1997. So how do you actually figure out which path to take? Here are 3 powerful frameworks/models that can help students or their parents choose a career path that makes sense for them(not just society) ✅ 1. IKIGAI Model (The Japanese Secret to a Fulfilling Career) Ask yourself 4 questions: -What do I love? (Interest) -What am I good at? (Skills) -What can I be paid for? (Market) -What does the world need? (Impact) Example: A student I mentored loved designing, was great at storytelling, and didn’t want a traditional desk job. Instead of engineering, she explored UI/UX design. 3 years later, she’s working at a design agency and building her own digital art page on the side. ✅ 2. Career Triangle:Passion – Potential – Practicality Don’t just chase passion blindly. Check if your interest, your aptitude, and the industry demand align. -Passion: Do you enjoy doing this? -Potential: Do you have the skill or willingness to learn? -Practicality: Will this pay your bills and grow in the future? Example A commerce student wanted to become a musician full-time. But she also loved marketing and storytelling. She found a sweet spot in music marketing – she now works with music labels promoting indie artists! How cool right? ✅ 3.The 3C Filter: Clarity – Curiosity – Coaches This is more process-oriented for those still exploring. Clarity- Start with a broad idea (e.g., "I want to work with people" or "I like solving problems"). Curiosity- Intern, shadow, take short courses to test waters. Coaches- Talk to seniors, professionals, career coaches who’ve walked the path. Example: A student I know thought she wanted to do law. After interning under a lawyer and taking a MOOC in psychology, she realised it wasn’t for her. She’s now studying psychology and plans to become a behavioural therapist. Career clarity doesn’t come overnight. It’s a mix of self-awareness, experimentation, and conversations. And it’s okay to not have it all figured out by 18. AI field note: Career paths are strategy documents in disguise. When a firm formalizes a new career path, it’s not an HR announcement. It’s a sign post on where value creation is going and what capabilities it plans to build for the long term. PwC just launched a firmwide engineering career path. A few things about the structure matter: 🖖 Dual tracks (deep technical mastery + engineering leadership), so engineers don’t have to leave the code to advance. ⚖️ Market-aligned titles, small on paper, big as a signal: PwC is competing for the same talent as tech companies, on terms engineers recognize. 🤖 AI-native learning designed to keep engineers ahead of where the industry is heading, not just current with where it is. 🚄 There’s also an early pipeline move: Engineer Your Career, an immersive experience for rising college juniors. That’s more than recruiting. It’s identity-building. It tells the market that engineering in a professional services firm is a real destination, a real career. Professional services has historically organized around advisory disciplines, audit, tax, consulting. Engineering existed, but in service of those disciplines. Making it first-class says the work is structurally changing: you need people who build and ship, not just advise and recommend. The firms that attract, develop, and retain engineering talent inside a services model will look very different in five years from the ones that keep treating engineering as an add-on. This is one of the sign posts we are putting up at PwC that I’m most energized about.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐠. It’s actually a 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 requiring high availability and fault tolerance. I realized that choosing a specialization in tech—be it Cloud Architecture, DevOps, or Full Stack—follows the same heuristics we use for 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧. Here is the breakdown of the "𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞" protocol: 1. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (Know What You Like): Just as we analyze logs to understand system behavior, analyze your history. What topics do you advocate for during lunch? What GitHub repos do you star? This is your baseline telemetry. 2. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (Heatmaps): In the sketch, I drew a heatmap matching "Good At" vs. "Like." In engineering terms, this is finding the sweet spot between 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗽𝘂𝘁 (volume of work you can handle) and 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 (how much drag you feel doing it). 3. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘁 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 (The 'Yuck' Stuff): This is crucial. Just because you are efficient at cleaning up messy legacy code doesn't mean you should specialize in it. If a task has high proficiency but low satisfaction, it represents future burnout—essentially, 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒆𝒃𝒕. Deprecate these tasks early. 4. 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 (Ask the Big Kids): Don't rely on cached data. Poll external nodes (Seniors, Principals). Ask about their daily stack, their leadership exposure, and their context switching overhead. 5. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗔𝗣 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 (Pick 2 & Look Closer): You usually have three metrics: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗙𝘂𝗻, and 𝗣𝗮𝘆. It is rare to get strong consistency across all three immediately. Analyze your "Career Castles" (A vs. B) and decide which trade-off is acceptable for this specific epoch of your life. 6. 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (Start): Analysis paralysis is the enemy of uptime. If the metrics are close, deploy the instance that you are leaning toward. You can always rollback or re-architect later. Your career isn't a waterfall model; it's agile. Iterate often. A new pre-print, "Navigating Through Turbulence", which I co-authored with Zhuo Wang, Kevin Reed, and Lucas Harris just went online. The essay summarizes our suggestions for students and early-career professionals. The weather & climate field is going through a period of significant disruption. Many are facing real career uncertainty, and we've all seen the discussions about talent moving from the public sector. These are serious challenges. Our paper aims to analyze this turbulence. We argue that alongside these difficulties, a simultaneous expansion of the ecosystem is happening, driven by broader societal needs and two key technologies: - High-Resolution Modeling that links weather and climate research - AI tools offering new capabilities for prediction and analysis This means the "traditional" career path is no longer the only one. Tech, finance, and startups are now part of a more complex and dynamic career landscape. For students and early-career professionals trying to find their footing, our paper offers a blueprint for navigating this new reality. The key strategies we discuss are: - Embracing career fluidity: A career path may now cross sectors, and this is becoming a common, valuable trajectory. - Building a "T-shaped" skillset: Anchoring deep science expertise with broad data, computation, and communication skills. - Focusing on problem-solving: Tools will change, but the core problems (like quantifying risk) are a stable anchor for a career. I used to think career growth was linear. Now I see it’s more like a clinical trial. In pharma, we think in phases. The more I reflect on my own journey, the more I realize careers work the same way. 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗜: 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Early roles are about asking: Does this path even work for me? We’re exploring, experimenting, sometimes failing fast. Just like in the lab, the goal isn’t perfection — it’s learning whether there’s potential. 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗜𝗜: 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀. Once you’ve seen what’s possible, you pivot and optimize. For me, that meant moving from sales into HEOR, then into market access — adjusting endpoints, figuring out what mattered most, and aligning with purpose. 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗜𝗜𝗜: 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁. This is where it’s bigger than you. You’re guiding teams, influencing systems, and thinking about reach. In a trial, the question becomes: Does this work for the population? In a career, it becomes: Am I making an impact that lasts? 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗜𝗩: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Even after approvals, the real questions emerge: Does this deliver value in practice? What are the long-term outcomes? In careers, this is the legacy stage — mentoring, shaping ecosystems, and proving the impact holds up beyond the trial. And just like clinical trials, careers come with: ✔️ Risks — not every pivot pays off. ✔️ Endpoints — milestones we set, even if they shift. ✔️ Learnings — the data we collect from both success and failure. Not every program makes it through every phase. Building a Career Path Framework That Works I’ve learned that a well‑designed career ladder is far more than a “nice to have.” It’s a strategic tool for clarity, consistency, equity, and engagement. Here’s how I advise my clients to approach it: 1. Architecture first. Begin with a coherent job architecture: clearly defined job families, levels (Associate → Senior → Lead → Principal), and dual tracks (individual contributor and people management). Without clarity in job levels and scope, career pathing becomes ambiguous. 2. Eligibility criteria that mean something. Move beyond vague rules. Define for each level what “ready” looks like: impact, decision‑making, scope, leadership (of self or others). Then link promotions to demonstrated competencies and business need not just tenure. 3. Governance & alignment with pay. The career pathing program must be managed and owned by HR and business leadership, reviewed on a schedule, and aligned with your compensation structure and market competitive data. Too often organizations build the pathway and poorly integrate it with pay bands and performance assessment. Beware of job‑title inflation and other exceptions. 4. Keep it simple, socialize broadly, and iterate. Change doesn’t stick unless it’s understood. Use plain language, communicate broadly, equip managers to have career and compensation conversations, and treat the framework as a living ever-evolving system. The career paths generalists actually take (and why they’re more valuable than specialist tracks). For years, I thought my career looked messy. Operations to marketing. Individual contributor to Chief of Staff. Building systems to building brands. I kept waiting for someone to ask: “But what are you actually good at?” Then I realized: the path IS the point. Here’s what nobody tells generalists about career trajectories: - Specialist paths are linear. You go deeper and deeper into one thing until you’re the expert. - Generalist paths are cyclical. You spiral across functions, building range and perspective with each loop. And that spiral becomes your competitive advantage. The career paths generalists actually take: 1. The Integrator Path You move laterally across departments, learning how each function works. Then you become the person who connects them all. Roles: Chief of Staff, VP of Operations, Head of Strategy, Business Operations Manager Your value: You see the whole system. You translate between silos. You spot the gaps before they break. 2. The Builder Path You move from execution to systems to strategy. You start by doing the work, then you build the process, then you lead the vision. Roles: Founder, General Manager, Head of Business Development, VP of Growth Your value: You’ve built from zero. You know what actually works. You don’t just design strategy — you know how to execute it. 3. The Translator Path You’ve lived in multiple worlds (operations + marketing, tech + business, creative + analytical) and now you’re the bridge. Roles: Product Manager, Marketing Operations, Strategy & Operations, Business Partner Your value: You speak multiple languages. You can translate technical into business, creative into scalable, vision into executable. 4. The Advisor Path You’ve built enough range that you can parachute into any situation, diagnose the problem, and design the solution. Roles: Consultant, Fractional Executive, Strategic Advisor, Interim Leader Your value: You’ve seen this problem before in three different contexts. You bring pattern recognition that specialists don’t have. Why generalist paths are more valuable: - Specialists hit a ceiling. Once you’re the deepest expert, the only way up is management (which requires generalist skills anyway). - Generalists scale infinitely. Every new function you understand, every industry you touch, every problem you solve adds to your range. Your career compounds. The future belongs to generalists. As work gets more complex and interdependent, companies need people who can see across the whole system, not just optimize one piece. The truth: Your “messy” career isn’t a liability. Typical Roles: Analyst: Entry-level position focusing on financial analysis, modeling, and pitch books. Associate: After 2-3 years as an analyst, associates manage analysts and interface with clients more closely. Vice President (VP): Manages client relationships, pitches, and deals, typically after 3-4 years as an associate. Director / Executive Director: Involved in high-level deal execution and strategy, guiding the overall transaction process. Buy-Side Institutions Buy-side firms manage money by investing in securities like stocks and bonds. These include mutual funds, hedge funds, and private equity.
