Every year, many qualified PhD applicants say: - “There is no funding available.” - “I couldn’t find a fully funded position.” - “I’ll apply next year when I see a scholarship.” Here’s the truth: Most PhD funding is not advertised like Chevening or Fulbright. It is hidden in plain sight. If you’re only searching “fully funded PhD scholarships 2026”, you’re missing the real opportunities. Here’s how serious PhD candidates find hidden funding 1️⃣ Search for Projects, Not Scholarships Many funded PhDs are advertised as: - PhD studentships - Doctoral research projects - Research council funded projects - Lab-based PhD positions Professors receive grants — and that grant includes funding for a PhD student.     My first 5 grant applications were rejected. Every single one. Here's how I went from £10k to £10m in research grant funding: I remember opening that fifth rejection email and thinking maybe my research just wasn't good enough. Maybe I wasn't cut out for this. Then a panel reviewer told me something that changed everything. She said: "I stopped reading on page 2." Not because the science was weak. Because the way I presented it was. I had buried the real-world impact on page 3. I led with the literature gap instead of the problem. My methodology was sound but my narrative was invisible. I was writing for academics. I should have been writing for funders. So I rebuilt my entire proposal structure around three principles. I now call it the 3P Proposal Structure. P1: Problem Framing. Lead with the real-world problem and its cost. Not the gap in the literature. Funders don't fund gaps. They fund solutions. "This problem costs the NHS £2.3 billion annually" hits harder than "this area remains under-explored." P2: Path Innovation. Show what you will do differently. Not just what you will study. Every applicant studies something. Very few explain why their approach is the one that will actually work. P3: Projected Impact. Connect your outcomes to the stakeholders who fund research. If the funder can see themselves in your story, you win. Same research question. Completely different proposal structure. The next application secured half a million pounds. Then a million. Then over the course of my career, more than £10 million in research funding. Grant writing is storytelling. Your research is the plot. The funder needs to see themselves in the story.     Breaking News: If you’re an international student or planning to study in the U.S., your education & career plans could be at risk. Major funding cuts are forcing universities to slash programs, freeze hiring, reduce graduate admissions & even revoke offers. The hardest hit? University-based research funding. Grants from institutions like The National Institutes of Health—which support thousands of PhD students & researchers are being drastically reduced. 🔹 University of Pennsylvania- 32+ graduate programs have been cut, including Arts & Sciences, History & English. Even some offered contracts are being revoked. Estimated NIH funding loss: $250M. 🔹 The Johns Hopkins University announced the termination of 2,000+ jobs following the administration’s decision to cut $800M in grants. This is the LARGEST layoff in the university’s history. 🔹 Columbia University– 65% of incoming Ph.D. students in Arts & Sciences lost their spots. Projected funding loss: $200M per year. 🔹 Yale University– University administrators have limited funding for PhD scholars to temporary, short-term support. 🔹 UC San Diego – The biological sciences department is reducing student admissions for the next academic year. 🔹 North Carolina State University– A hiring freeze is in place. Potential NIH research funding loss: $20M-$23M. 🔹 Stanford University & University of Louisville– Hiring freezes for faculty and staff, with 24+ other universities following suit. Even “Feed the Future”, a U.S.-funded agricultural research program, is being defunded, forcing 19 research labs in 17 states to shut down. 12,500+ students, scholars & professionals are already affected. And with proposals to increase taxes on university endowments from 1.4% to as high as 21%, financial pressure on universities is only growing. If you’re affected, here’s how you can take control: 1. Find alternative funding: Check for university-backed grants & private fellowships. You can look for crowdfunding too. 2. Consider global hubs: Countries like Germany, Canada, and the UK offer generous scholarships, lower tuition & better post-study work opportunities. 3. Tap into industry sponsorships: Tech, AI & biotech companies often fund graduate research, so explore corporate sponsorships. Remote research partnerships with European & Asian universities can keep your work going. 4. Make most of your options: Use OPT & CPT to gain work experience in the U.S. Consider transferring to more affordable institutions or pursuing research in other countries. 5. Build strong networks: Tap into LinkedIn, alumni groups & associations for funding & job leads. Some companies fund PhD research in exchange for partnership. The landscape is changing, but I personally believe America continues to be a land of opportunities for those who are persistent & resilient.     I am thrilled to see this announcement from the National Science Foundation (NSF) on how we translate research into public benefit, which acknowledges an important consideration: that different institutions and IHEs have different capacities to do this. This new program creates tiers for entry and prioritizes research mobilizations, knowledge dissemination, engagement, and commercial tech transfer. The gap between academic discovery and tangible public solutions is one of the most significant opportunities in the U.S. innovation ecosystem. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) have released an updated solicitation for the Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program. The goal is clear: build capacity for translational research at Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) across the nation, not just in established tech hubs. What is distinctive about this approach? The NSF is moving beyond the traditional "tech transfer" metrics of just patents and startups. They are looking for Research Translation Readiness Levels (RTRL). Whether an institution is just starting to build infrastructure or is ready to mentor others, there is a specific track designed to meet them where they are. The 5 Tracks for Funding: 🚀 Track 1: Accelerating Technology Transfer (ACT) For: IHEs with low-to-medium readiness but high potential. Goal: Build the initial infrastructure for innovation. Funding: Up to $3M (3 years) 🌱 Track 2: Growing Capacity (GROW) For: IHEs with high research volume but low translation outcomes. Goal: Partner with a mentor institution to unleash innovation potential. Funding: Up to $6M (4 years) 🤝 Track 3: Technology Transfer Resource Centers (RESOURCE) For: High-readiness IHEs or non-profits. Goal: Launch regional centers to support other institutions with guidance and services. Funding: Up to $8M (4 years) 📚 Track 4: Education and Training (ET) For: Organizations with established ecosystems. Goal: Develop and deploy national training materials for entrepreneurship and translation. Funding: Up to $3M (3 years). 🔗 Track 5: Coordinating Center (CART) For: A unifying center to coordinate efforts across all tracks. Goal: Monitor progress and facilitate integration.     I've secured $2.3M+ in research funding over the last 10 years. After reviewing 50+ grant applications, I've seen the same pattern repeat. (My newsletter can help: https://lnkd.in/e4HfhmrH) Here's what separates funded projects from rejected ones: • Funded grants answer 3 critical questions that most researchers ignore • Rejected grants read like academic papers instead of business plans • Winners show executable plans, not just good science The brutal truth? Grant reviewers aren't looking for fascinating research questions. They're looking for fundable science. There's a massive difference. Most researchers focus on: • Ambitious long-term goals • Complex theoretical frameworks • Comprehensive background research But reviewers need to see: • Realistic execution plans • Quantifiable returns on investment • Proof that YOUR team is uniquely qualified I learned this the hard way after my first application got rejected. Same smart science. Same passion & dedication. But completely wrong approach. I shifted from writing like an academic to thinking like an investor. That changed everything. My grant success rate is now closer to 80%. The difference wasn't better science. It was better storytelling around executable plans. Your research might change the world.     An important look at the #impact of $1.4BN i3 #research over six years, reveals a 26% success rate: "Doing rigorous research isn’t easy; you need to set up a group of comparison students who don’t get the intervention and track everyone’s progress. Of the 112 properly evaluated grants, the most common result was a null finding, meaning that the intervention didn’t make a difference. What are the lessons learned for #research and #innovation in #edreform and #edinvestment? - First, the point of #randd is to find out what works and tweak for optimal, maximal impact. We have to accept this as part of the work and get faster cycle insights. - Null findings *may* be because of methodological or implementation issues, rather than the efficacy of the tool or intervention itself. - IMPLEMENTATION is everything. It's hard. There are so many contextual variables. What are the "real" and "responsive" human and institutional barriers in actual classrooms that prevent the tool or intervention being used as designed for maximum impact for kids? - It is easy to keep "adding" to an intervention. However, what may be needed is simplification and localization to ensure REPLICATION for SCALE (see above re implementation). - When the achievement benefit is small, you need many more (and different) students (in different contexts) to benefit (bigger sample sizes are better) - While popularity and ubiquity do not equal effectiveness, @WWC and #edresearch should consider more mixed methods as part of logic models and evaluation as affect and ownership matter to #impact and #studentoutcomes in #edresearch

    After 2 years of work, both of my grants were rejected. Here's what saved my research career. As a junior investigator, I failed again and again. → My institutional T32 postdoc grant kept me going.  → It protected my time. Gave me room to breathe. On the 3rd try, I succeeded. Here's what nobody told me:  → Grant review has a large element of randomness.  → One reviewer often decides your fate. So the winning move isn't one perfect grant.  It's having multiple grants in play, across multiple sources, matched to your stage. The only way to guarantee you won't be funded is to not apply. 5 different types of research funding for different stages of your journey: 1️⃣ Institutional Funding ↳ The least competitive money you'll ever apply for, and it buys the one thing that saves careers. Protected time.  A small award during my residency bought us a national database. That purchase started my whole research career. 2️⃣ Government Funding (NIH/VA) ↳ The mechanisms are built as a ladder, so you compete against peers at your stage, not senior investigators.  As an Early Stage Investigator, reviewers expect less preliminary data and paylines are kinder. The system tilts your way exactly once. Use it. 3️⃣ Foundations ↳ Mission-driven. If your work fits their mission, you're not another applicant. You're the reason they exist.  Smaller pools, and alignment beats pedigree. 4️⃣ Industry ↳ Goes far beyond clinical trials and can expand your reach when federal paylines are brutal. The catch: conflicts of interest quietly close doors later, especially guidelines committees.  Protect your future options first. 5️⃣ Philanthropy & Crowdsourcing ↳ When traditional funding dries up, unconventional money keeps projects alive, and builds a community that believes in your work.  Some of my own patients have supported my research. Rejection doesn’t define you or your science. It's a signal to widen your search. Start where you are.     WHAT DO I WISH I KNEW AT THE BEGINNING OF MY ACADEMIC CAREER REGARDING RESEARCH FUNDING? Securing funding as an early-stage researcher can feel like navigating a maze. But fear not! I'm here to share 5 key steps to help you land the support you need to take your research to the next level: 1. Know your landscape Research funders: Identify agencies, foundations, and internal grants aligned with your field and research focus. Check eligibility criteria carefully! Collaborators: Analyse successful proposals and network with peers. If you don't have access to examples, ask your research office for some. Consider potential collaborations to strengthen your application. 2. Craft a compelling story Problem & solution: Clearly articulate the research problem, its significance, and your proposed solution's impact. Show the potential to fill a gap or advance knowledge. Consider why it hasn't been done before! Methodology & feasibility: Demonstrate a robust research plan with achievable methods and timelines. Don't propose to do something 'fancy' or 'trendy' - propose what would get the work done. Explicitly state tasks, milestones and deliverables. Highlight your expertise and access to resources. 3. Budget with precision Justify every expense: Link budget items to specific research activities and expected outcomes. Be realistic and transparent. Work closely with your finance team to develop a coherent budget and justification for resources. 4. Practice makes perfect Seek feedback: Share your proposal with mentors, colleagues, or grant writing workshops for constructive criticism. Simulate funder Q&A sessions to gain confidence and refine your responses. 5. Learn from rejections Rejection is redirection: Learn from feedback and tailor your future proposals for a better fit. Don't give up!
