    Jennifer Black’s path into engineering started in childhood, driven by curiosity and a love of taking things apart to see how they worked. Today, after more than three decades at Trane Technologies, she’s helping shape a more inclusive future for the field. 👩🔧✨ Some insights from her story that stood out: 🔹 The early days were isolating: She began her career in the early 1990s, when women in engineering were extremely rare. Being one of the only women in the room was normal — and it shaped her commitment to making things different for those coming after her. 🔹 The pipeline is finally growing: At recent industry conferences, she sees women represented at nearly every table. And at university career fairs, young women are showing up in large numbers, forming long lines for engineering roles. To her, it’s a clear sign of cultural shift and growing confidence. 🎓💫 🔹 STEM careers don’t have to be linear. Her own journey moved across engineering, marketing, software, recruiting, pricing and finance before she stepped into program-management. Each role added new skills and broadened her understanding of how the business works. 🌱 🔹 Stepping away and returning is possible with the right support. She paused her career to focus on raising her children, then re-entered the workforce with the help of mentors who valued her contributions.     If there’s one lesson I’ve learned during my PhD, it’s to stay open-minded about future career paths and take the time to explore them for myself. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking there’s only one “right” path, that mentorship and meaningful research only exist in academia, or that industry work is always rigid, product-focused, and uninspiring. But the truth is far more nuanced and often hidden behind individual biases, incomplete context, or a limited sample of experiences. There are academic labs building real-world systems in collaboration with industry. And there are teams in industry doing world-class research with the resources and urgency to bring those ideas to life at scale. Let’s stop eliminating options based on generic assumptions or secondhand opinions. If you're exploring industry research roles, talk to the people doing them today. If you're considering academia, ask newer faculty, postdocs, and PhD students about their actual day-to-day. Their perspectives are often more grounded and current than the sweeping generalizations you might hear online. That said, there are always outliers, people who love or hate their jobs for reasons that might not apply to you. So gather a range of perspectives, but interpret them in the context of your own values, goals, and working style.     Three unconventional majors I wish more students knew about 👇🏽 When we talk about career paths in STEM and tech, we often default to Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. But there are so many powerful, lesser-known majors that open just as many (and sometimes even more diverse) doors. Here are three I highly recommend more students consider: 1. Industrial Engineering (IE) Industrial Engineering is all about systems optimization. It blends math, business, and engineering to improve how we design processes, manage people, and use resources. What makes it so exciting is that IE isn’t locked to one industry — you can apply it to healthcare, supply chains, manufacturing, tech, and more. 📌 You’ll learn: operations research, human factors, logistics, quality control, and systems thinking. 💼 Careers: product manager, UX researcher, operations analyst, supply chain manager, data scientist, process engineer. 2. Optical Engineering You hear a lot about MechE, EE, or CE — but optical engineering deserves way more attention.     My first research experience was at 15 years old. Not because I had a master plan. Not because I was trying to build a CV. But because I couldn't imagine my life without biomedicine. From that moment, I haven't had a single free summer. I was emailing professors, applying to programmes, and chasing whatever opportunity would let me learn more about how the human body works — and how engineering could help it. Learning AI for skin cancer at 16. Genetics at Cambridge at 19. Neuroblastoma bioprinting during my final year. Clinical Engineering rotations now. I didn't do any of this for the sake of it. I did it because each one genuinely fascinated me. And here's the thing nobody tells you about chasing what you love: The opportunities start finding you. Nottingham Trent gave me a scholarship. The NHS is now funding my MSc at King's College London. Not because I had the most impressive list of titles. But because I built something real — driven by genuine curiosity. If you're a student trying to figure out your path: Don't chase fancy experience just to add it to your CV. Chase what actually keeps you up at night. Chase the questions you can't stop thinking about.
