On why simple writing is the ultimate skill in a scholarly life. The hardest habit to break for a good PhD student is pompous writing. They've been taught to vary word choices, use metaphors, and clutter up their prose to impress their friends with their genius and their instructors with their intellect. For the first two to three years of training, I spent nudging, pushing, and asking students to simplify their writing, take a knife to their prose, and distill the essentials. Why? 1. Simple writing forces you to understand your ideas. If you can’t explain your theory of social cognition in a few plain sentences, you probably don’t fully understand it yet. Example: Instead of saying, "Our results elucidate the multifaceted interdependencies among affective states," say, "Feeling good makes people trust others more." 2. It builds trust across audiences. Clear writing shows you aren’t hiding behind jargon or dressing up weak ideas. Example: Compare a paper titled "A Heuristic Evaluation of Pedagogical Modalities" with one called "How Students Learn Better in Small Classes." Which one do you trust more? 3. It frees you from pretension. Academia often sounds complicated — but real scholarship rewards humility. Example: You don’t have to say "epistemological frameworks of inquiry" when you could say "ways of knowing." It doesn’t make you sound less serious — just less pompous. 4. It honors your readers' time & intelligence. Your readers are smart, but they’re also tired & busy. Make their lives easier, not harder. Example: Instead of, "Given the aforementioned, one might infer...," say, "So, we found that..." Straightforward respect always wins. 5. It makes your ideas portable & powerful. Ideas that are simply written travel across fields, countries, & generations. Example: Darwin didn’t title his book "An Examination of Ontogenetic Species Differentiation" — he called it "On the Origin of Species." That’s why the world still reads it. 6. It makes revision and improvement possible. Simple writing exposes the real structure of your arguments — & shows where the weak spots are. Example: A messy paragraph, such as "The multiplicity of interconnected variables requires further parsing...", is harder to fix than a clear line, like "Several factors influence the outcome; some matter more than others." 7. It’s the Foundation for a Lifetime of Contribution. Simple writing gives your work staying power, not just attention. Example: Think about classic works that endure — Einstein’s papers, Jane Jacobs’ Death & Life of Great American Cities — they don’t survive because they were complicated; they survive because they were clear. Simple writing is about learning to elevate your ideas while broadening their reach. It's about making your ideas accessible to the smartest & the least of us, which is how scholars don’t just impress their peers — they shape fields, mentor future generations, & leave a real, lasting legacy. #academicwriting

I revisited a paper on how to write a research paper well, and the message was blunt: Many rejections come from avoidable mistakes. Here are a few that matter most: 1️⃣ A weak title weakens the paper before it begins If the title is: → Too vague → Too long → Trying too hard you are already losing the reader. The title should match the study clearly. 2️⃣ Most people will judge your paper by the abstract That is just reality. The abstract is what reviewers see first. It is what shows up online. It is what people find when searching. If it is careless, too long, or poorly written, the rest of the paper may never get a fair chance. 3️⃣ Your introduction should not feel like punishment The paper makes an important point: You are not only reporting a study. You are telling a scientific story. If the introduction is dull, unfocused, or missing a clear hypothesis, you lose momentum early. 4️⃣ Methods are where credibility becomes visible This section must contain enough detail for someone to repeat your study if they want to. If your methods are unclear, the reader starts questioning everything else. 5️⃣ Results are not the place to show off Results should be results. Not discussion. Not interpretation. Not decoration. The paper is clear on this too: → avoid repeating yourself → keep figures useful → use as few images as necessary 6️⃣ The discussion is where many writers become careless This is where people often overstate findings. The paper warns against assigning greater significance to results than they deserve. That one mistake can make a serious paper feel unserious. 7️⃣ Good English is not a luxury It is part of the science being understood. One of the sharpest lessons in the paper is this: If a reviewer missed your point, the problem may not be the reviewer. It may be your writing. That line should humble every researcher. One of the biggest mistakes I made when writing my academic papers: I hid strong ideas inside long, tangled sentences and long manuscripts. Now I understand why. Our work is nuanced. Our field is technical. Our thinking is layered. But if the sentence is way too long and spreads over several lines, it needs editing. Clarity increases impact. Not because the science becomes simpler. Because the reader can finally see it. The problem isn’t just how we start writing papers… it’s that many of us never finish them. Early in my career, I learned the hard way that the “start at the abstract and grind down” approach is a trap. It slows you down and leaves you vulnerable to scope creep. That spiral where you keep adding just one more analysis or one more reference… and suddenly, three years have passed and the paper is still “in progress.” Here’s the approach that saved me: I start with the core evidence like tables, figures, and key findings. Then build the results from those, nothing extra. Write the methods I followed to match exactly what I did (not what I wish I’d done). Then I draft the discussion with clear boundaries including what my study answers and what it doesn’t. After all, I finish with the introduction/abstract once the whole story is in place. The goal isn’t to keep polishing forever but to produce something complete, accurate, and ready to share. A “good and done” paper beats a “perfect but unpublished” one every time. Without dissemination through publication, opportunities for constructive feedback are lost. In scholarly practice, the advancement of knowledge depends on an iterative process of peer review, critique, and dialogue. Academic progress is inherently collaborative each contribution builds upon prior work, creating a cumulative body of evidence and insight that cannot flourish in isolation. That day, a student asked me: “Nelly, do I need citations if the argument comes from my own thinking?” She was not the only one. As she raised that question, other students had nodded, showing their same concerns. For as long as I can remember during my teaching career, it is one of the most common questions I often receive, and my answer is always the same: “Would your argument stand on its own without them? Moreover, how can you be sure your ideas align with established knowledge?” Here is how I explain the power of citations to my students: 1. Citations are bridges to expertise I often tell them that reading a journal or other academic source is like talking to an expert- a precious moment we need to appreciate. However, we meet them in their writing rather than asking them questions in person. Having a citation is an important process; we are not just voicing an opinion but joining a scholarly conversation. Think of citations as a way to consult experts indirectly. Their research becomes our foundation, lending our ideas credibility and anchoring them in evidence rather than speculation. 2. They turn claims into evidence Even if our argument sounds logical, it risks coming across as an unsupported opinion without citations. Citations function like witnesses in a trial, strengthening our case with authoritative backing. Supporting our argument with citations sets academic writing apart from everyday opinion: it is built on verifiable knowledge, not intuition. 3. Citations show we are part of a dialogue Referencing is not just about borrowing ideas but engaging with them. Citing shows that we have read, questioned, and built upon existing work. As the saying goes, “Writers do not write in vacuums; we stand on the shoulders of giants.” No original idea emerges without influence. When a source sparks your thinking, that intellectual debt must be acknowledged. It is not only respectful—it is essential. It's their intellectual property that we are "borrowing". After all, we cannot just “borrow” someone’s work without permission or credit. That is plagiarism. As the day faded before our eyes and before I dismissed the class, I reminded them again: Citations do not undermine our originality—they strengthen it. They validate our reasoning, position our voice within a larger discourse, and elevate our work by showing that our ideas are rooted in rigorous, informed, scholarly thinking. That day may be one of those days when I have repeated the mantra, more than I usually do: Citations confirm, clarify, and strengthen. I've seen brilliant students who sailed through coursework suddenly hit a wall when it comes to dissertation writing. They're confused, frustrated, and convinced they're "not good writers." If you can't state your argument in eight words, you don't understand it. Barbara Gips died last week at 89. You've never heard of her. But you've quoted her work for decades: "In space no one can hear you scream." Eight words. No special effects. Just eight words capturing Alien's entire premise better than any plot summary could. Gips wrote movie taglines—and mastered what most academics never learn: Compression isn't reduction. Clarity isn't simplification. On Substack, I argue taglines can teach us everything about academic writing. They promise before they prove—academics bury claims under throat-clearing. They create tension through juxtaposition—thesis statements smooth out contradictions. They use concrete details—student papers drown in "various sociocultural factors." They commit to voice—academic prose hedges into meaninglessness. Here's the truth: Students don't struggle with complexity. They struggle with clarity about what their complexity means. Try compressing this academic sentence: "This paper examines the intersectionality of socioeconomic status and educational achievement in urban contexts, finding that systemic barriers differentially impact marginalized populations." Tagline version: "Poor neighborhoods get bad schools. We keep it that way." The compression doesn't lose the argument—it clarifies it. The academic version hides agency. The tagline forces you to say what you mean. Students who can compress their arguments to tagline length, then expand with evidence, write prose that does intellectual work. The ones who can't? They're not ready to write 8,000 words about it. "Part man. Part machine. All cop." That's not dumbing down—that's precision. Proof that profound ideas can survive brutal economy. 🔍 𝗔𝗜 𝘃𝘀. 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝘂𝘀 As a writing teacher, coach, researcher, and corpus linguist, I'm fascinated by a recent 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 study (https://lnkd.in/g65p7hzu) exploring the differences between AI-generated and human academic writing. Having spent years analyzing student essays and large-scale corpora, I see striking parallels between AI outputs and novice academic writing. Below, I've listed key observations from both the article and my own experience to explain the findings of the article and my own insights: 🤔💡𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵: Novice academic research writers often report rather than deeply engage with content (sources), much like AI-generated text. Expert writers, in contrast, offer unique insights and personal connections - a skill we actively cultivate. 🔊🤫 𝗛𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: AI and developing writers often struggle with appropriate hedging. In fact, both AI and novices often boost excessively, which can lead to over-generalization. From corpus research, we know seasoned academics skillfully balance assertion and caution - a skill that takes time to master. 🌳🌱 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵: AI and less experienced writers often provide broad overviews rather than deep analyses. I have often told students, 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘵𝘩, 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘩 (𝘶𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩). AI-generated texts often mirror what I see in early drafts from students working on the development of adding complexity to their arguments. 🧵🧶 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The journey from patchwriting to effective source integration has always been a key focus in my teaching. AI's approach to sources often resembles early-stage academic writing, highlighting the need for careful guidance in both contexts. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 This study and much corpus research highlight the specific features we can examine in efforts to differentiate human vs. AI-generated texts. You're not bad at academic writing. You just don't have a system. Everyone says "read more papers, write more often." But nobody shows you how to actually improve. Here's how: 1. Find your accountability partner → You don't get extra points for struggling alone. → Find someone who writes well and will give you real feedback. 2. Identify your weak spots → Don't try to fix "bad writing." → Fix concrete things: Is your challenge structure, flow, clarity, or vocabulary? → You can’t fix what you can’t name. 3. Read good papers AND bad papers → Good papers show you what works. → Bad papers teach you what to avoid. → Study how they structure arguments, not just what they say. 4. Read beyond your field → Reading academic papers alone won't teach you writing craft. → Read actual books on writing, blog posts, and articles. → Great writing anywhere teaches clarity everywhere. 5. Write every single day → 15 minutes minimum. → A short reflection, a random thought, a summary of anything. → Writing fluency comes from repetition. 6. Translate your research for non-experts → If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. → Write blog posts or LinkedIn articles about your work. 7. Stop editing while you draft → First draft = get ideas down. → Second draft = make it good. → Third draft = polish. → Trying to be perfect while writing first draft kills momentum. 8. Get feedback early and often → Waiting for "complete" drafts slows your growth. → Share rough paragraphs and messy outlines. → Fast feedback beats slow perfection every time. Writing isn't a talent you're born with. Every great academic writer you admire once wrote terrible first drafts too. The difference is they kept writing.
