India’s green economy is growing fast but LinkedIn data suggests green talent is growing even faster. The LinkedIn Hiring Rate (LHR) for green talent — defined as professionals with green skills, green job titles, or both — is now 59.7% higher than for the overall workforce. This means green-skilled professionals are significantly more likely to be hired than their peers, underscoring the growing demand for sustainability-focused roles. “The prioritisation of green talent by Indian companies is being fuelled by an interplay of policy reforms, rising consumer consciousness, and the need for deep business transformation,” says Neelima Burra, Chief Strategy, Transformation, and Marketing Officer at Luminous Power Technologies. “Government initiatives like the PM Suryaghar Yojna, National Solar Mission, and Smart City Mission, combined with the growing mandate for ESG reporting — are also pushing companies to recruit sustainability experts, carbon auditors, and ESG strategists to meet regulatory and investor expectations,” she adds further. Operational efficiency has emerged as the top skill across the top five industries increasingly hiring for green skills, as per LinkedIn data. In contrast, precision agriculture skills lead in farming, ranching, and forestry — highlighting how sector-specific green skills are evolving. “Operational efficiency offers the fastest route to tangible returns. It moves the conversation beyond regulatory compliance to net profitability, ensuring we can do more with less energy and fewer materials,” says Venu Nuguri Managing Director and CEO at Hitachi Energy. This surge in demand aligns with broader economic trends. Green jobs in India have grown over 10 times in the past five years, with Gen Z accounting for 63% of applicants, reports The Economic Times, citing a report by WeNaturalists. The projections are equally ambitious. India’s green economy will generate 7.29 million jobs by FY28 and 35 million by 2047, as the sector scales toward a $1 trillion valuation by 2030 and $15 trillion by 2070, suggests another report by The Economic Times, citing a report by NLB Services. The message is clear: green skills aren’t just good for the planet — they’re becoming essential for employability. The biggest myth about climate careers? That you have to take a pay cut for purpose. The data says the exact opposite. A new report from RMIT University and Deloitte (linked in the comments) reveals the market is paying a significant ‘green premium’ for managers with climate skills – an average of 13% more, or an extra $13,000 annually. 💰 This is a clear price signal from a market facing a severe talent bottleneck. That same report projects a need for over 1 million more green-skilled workers in Australia by 2030, just to keep pace with demand from medium and large businesses. The Clean Energy Council backs this up, suggesting the energy transition alone could create an additional 604,000 jobs by 2030. When does a skills 'gap' start to look more like a careers 'gold rush'? And while businesses report that cost and time are major barriers to upskilling their own teams, that creates a huge opportunity for proactive individuals. But what does this 'green premium' look like in real life? It looks like Rob Chan. I recently featured Rob in my #HumansOfSydneyClimateAction series (see carousel or https://lnkd.in/gNp_62sg). Look no further than this to see how expert skills can be leveraged for climate impact. After influential roles at mobility giants like Uber and Zoomo, he’s now the Managing Director for Turo Australia, actively decarbonising transport by scaling the car-sharing marketplace. Rob’s "ah-ha!" moment was deeply personal, intertwined with becoming a parent during the Black Summer bushfires. That personal drive, combined with his deep professional expertise in marketplaces, made his skillset incredibly valuable to a sector desperate for experienced leaders. He's a great example of how you don't start from scratch. You pivot. I see this pattern all over our Climate Crew community. It's people like James Butler, taking his deep strategic experience from Bain & Company and Qantas to become Head of Strategy at Ausgrid, right at the heart of the energy transition. It's Alison Chan, transitioning from a decade as a Director at a magic circle law firm to become a leader in sustainable finance. Their stories prove the point: the challenge is learning to translate world-class skills from other industries to bridge the perceived 'experience gap'. Engineers, accountants, marketers, lawyers, project managers – your expertise is in high demand. A year ago, I invested in myself by taking the Terra.do 'Learning for Action' course to deepen my own climate knowledge. It helped me connect my existing skills in photography and storytelling to where they could have the most impact. The transition doesn't need everyone to become a climate scientist. It needs skilled professionals to apply what they already know to solving new, urgent and well-funded problems. The opportunity is immense. The demand is proven. Please stop chasing ESG careers without real specialization. I see too many people entering sustainability without direction. In 2026 interest alone will not build careers. Companies no longer need awareness only. They need specialists who can actually deliver. Do this instead: • Pick one sustainability vertical and commit deeply. • Learn how theory becomes real business decisions. • Track regulations like GRI ISSB CSRD closely. • Get hands on experience even behind scenes. • Share insights so expertise becomes visible. There are many sustainability verticals to explore deeply: • Climate risk and adaptation. • Sustainable finance and banking integration. • Circular economy and resource efficiency. • Sustainable supply chains and human rights. • Renewable energy and decarbonisation. • Biodiversity and nature protection. • Sustainability reporting and ESG frameworks. • Social sustainability and workforce wellbeing. • Policy governance and regulatory systems. 🌍 Why are so many companies struggling to make progress in their green transitions? One key reason I’ve long argued is the lack of human capital. Sustainability isn’t just about technology, policies, or financial commitments—it’s about people. Without a workforce equipped with the right skills, even the most ambitious climate goals risk becoming unattainable. The newly released Global Green Skills Report 2024 from LinkedIn paints a clear picture of the challenge ahead. Despite growing momentum in climate commitments, the supply of green talent is lagging far behind demand: 🌱 Demand for green skills grew 11.6% globally in 2023-2024, but supply only increased by 5.6%. 🚨 By 2050, half of all jobs in the green economy may lack qualified candidates unless we double the size of the green talent pool. 💼 Workers with green skills are already 54.6% more likely to get hired, showing the immense career opportunities in this space. The report also highlights demographic and industry trends: 👩🎓 Gen Z: A generation eager to tackle climate challenges, but only 1 in 20 have green skills today. 👩🔬 Women: Despite progress, the green gender gap persists, with women significantly underrepresented in green roles. 🏗️ Industries in focus: Utilities, construction, manufacturing, and tech are at the forefront of the transition, with soaring demand for skills like sustainable procurement, renewable energy management, and environmental policy. This data reinforces what many of us have felt for years: we cannot decarbonize the economy without upskilling and reskilling the global workforce. Here's some good green news: 74% of large corporations have increased sustainability staff in the past two years! This indicates a growing commitment to ESG and a need for skilled professionals, but is it enough? Trellis Group's "The State of the Sustainability Profession report for 2024" reveals a profession at a crossroads. Increased regulations are driving a surge in demand for sustainability professionals, yet there's a concerning trend of "greenhushing" as companies shy away from ambitious goals. This report, based on a survey of over 1,185 sustainability professionals, sheds light on the evolving landscape of ESG, compensation trends, and the growing freelance marketplace. Here are some stats that stood out to me: 🟢 67% of companies have added full-time employees to gather data in an auditable way and implement systems for reporting ESG data. 🟢 The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will require nearly 50,000 EU companies and around 3,000 U.S. companies to report their climate and environmental impact. 🟢 Between 2019 and 2023, green freelance job posts on Upwork increased by over 500%. 🟢 Sustainability professionals collectively earned 460% more on Upwork in 2023 than they did in 2019. Working in sustainability at Google, I've seen firsthand the growing importance of ESG and the challenges companies face in navigating this complex landscape. While the increase in sustainability headcount and investment in ESG reporting systems is a positive sign, the greenhushing trend is a concern. Last year, we published our thesis on how green skills were growing. In our OnePointFive (opf.degree) playbook “Forget the Sustainability Unicorn, How to Upskill a Climate Workforce”, we argued that the next big shift in climate work would be this: 👉 Sustainability would embed across the entire org - not just sit with the Sustainability team. A year (and a fair bit of turmoil 😢) later — climate jobs have slowed, sustainability roles have been cut, and “green” has found itself with a target on its back. So I was curious. What does the actual jobs data say? 🔍 LinkedIn’s 2025 Green Skills Report just dropped (led by Efrem Bycer and team!), and the data is fascinating. I combed through it so you don’t have to: 🟢 Green is getting embedded For the first time, the majority of green hires are happening outside of traditional green roles. Think: - Tech workers managing sustainable AI/data centers - Finance roles focusing on sustainable capital deployment - Supply chain teams upskilling in emissions tracking 🟢 The demand-supply gap is growing Jobs requiring green skills are growing twice as fast as the growth in green talent - four years in a row now. 🟢 Energy management is spiking Especially in AI-heavy industries. The tech sector led the growth in green skill intensity from 2021 to 2025. 🟢 Europe leads - regulation matters Increased green skill growth in Europe is likely due to regulatory pressure. When rules change, skills follow. 🟢 Green talent gets hired more Despite a global hiring slowdown, green-skilled workers are hired 46.6% more often than the average. So, what‘s next? The green transition is not just a climate imperative — it’s a people imperative. If we want a just transition, we need: ✅ Better job data, from countries, and orgs to drive policy ✅ Cross-sector investment in people, in the twin transition of Green and AI skills ✅ Smarter, faster upskilling (especially in high-demand sectors like tech and infrastructure) With COP30 ongoing and the Jobs & Skills Day in Belém just happening last week, now’s the time to double down on talent, not pull back.
