This idea was revolutionary because it anticipated zoning—one of the most important principles in modern HVAC systems. Programming was first introduced to me in my undergrad at an all-women's college. I loved solving logical problems, but I quickly realized I wasn't going to be the best coder in the room. That distinction belonged to my friend Shaama. She lived in the computer lab, coding with such passion that even the stern "Mother Superior" called her parents to praise her exceptional skills - a rare occurrence usually reserved for troublemakers!. Yet at home, Shama faced resistance. "Why computer science?" her family questioned her decision. All she could say was, "Why not?" What she lacked were visible role models—women who had blazed the trail before her. Throughout history, brilliant women worked in the shadows, tackling work men often avoided. 𝗔𝗱𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺 in the 1840s, envisioning computing capabilities most couldn't grasp. Known as a glamorous film star, she secretly invented frequency-hopping technology to prevent Nazi jamming of torpedo signals—foundational to WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS we use daily. The military initially dismissed her work before classifying it as too valuable to implement. 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 upended mathematics despite being barred from faculty positions because of her gender. Einstein called her "the most significant creative mathematical genius" of her time, yet she lectured under male colleagues' names. These women didn't merely participate in technological revolution—they drove it forward against systems designed to exclude them. Women’s contributions to tech are often overlooked. Case in point: We call it “software engineering” because of Margaret Hamilton. She coined the term while leading NASA’s software team for Apollo 11, arguing that software should be engineered with the same precision and discipline as hardware. And she proved it. Minutes before the Lunar Module was set to land on the moon in 1969, alarms started flashing on board. The guidance computer was overloaded. Most missions would have aborted. But Hamilton’s design was built for this. Her software was smart enough to know when to ignore non-essential tasks and prioritize critical ones: to keep the mission on track. That’s fault-tolerant computing at its finest. Her work shaped asynchronous programming, modular architecture, and error recovery. These are concepts that power AI, cloud, and distributed systems today. Another inspiring thing about Hamilton? She was a self-driven learner in a time when no formal training for “software engineering” exists. She learned by building. The face of AI is male. The backbone isn’t. Every week, headlines amplify the same few voices in AI. Founders. Frontmen. The face of the product. The pitch. The disruption. But behind that spotlight is a network of women shaping the intelligence and rarely credited for it. 🔸 Women make up less than 30% of the global AI workforce. 🔸 10% of AI companies have female founders 🔸 Only 24% of AI executives are female. The faces we see - the ones quoted, and praised - rarely reflect the ones writing the protocols, safeguarding the systems, or scaling the products responsibly. 🔹 When OpenAI launched ChatGPT, it was Mira Murati who led the teams that made it possible. Recently she raised $2 billion in seed funding for her new venture, Thinking Machines Lab, valuing it at $12 billion before a single product has launched: a new generation of safe, multimodal AI. 🔹 While many debate AI’s impact, Francesca Rossi has been designing its guardrails, leading ethics at IBM and advising the EU on regulation. 🔹 Dr. Joy Buolamwini exposed racial bias in facial recognition, forcing global tech giants to pause and correct course. 🔹 Timnit Gebru raised the alarm on LLM risks and built an institute to do what Big Tech wouldn’t. 🔹 Cynthia Breazeal imagined emotionally intelligent machines long before the market was ready. 🔹 And in few weeks, Fidji Simo - a woman from a little town in the south of France - will lead OpenAI’s entire Applications business. ChatGPT. The API. That’s at least one-third of OpenAI. And yet her name still doesn’t trend. These women aren’t the footnotes of AI. They are its ethics and architecture. They’re building trust, translating research into responsibility. So why don’t we hear more about them? Because tech culture still mistakes visibility for value. It rewards those who move fast and make noise. These women lead product, engineering, research, and governance. When the credit consistently skips the people doing the heavy lifting, we end up with a distorted picture of who’s truly leading. What Happens When Women Lead in Data? We talk a lot about data, how to collect it, analyze it, and leverage it. But rarely do we ask: Who’s leading these efforts? When women lead in data science and AI, they bring more than technical skills. They bring perspective, empathy, and a drive to build systems that work for everyone. And the results are Powerful, Inclusive and Transformative. Here’s how; 1. Inclusive Design Take Femtech as an example. Alicia Chong Rodriguez, founder of Bloomer Tech, developed a smart bra that monitors women’s heart health, something sorely missing from mainstream medical tech. Why:- - Because most health data excludes women. - Women in leadership noticed this gap, and innovated around it. When women lead, blind spots get solved. 2. Tackling Bias from the Inside Dr. Joy Buolamwini founded the Algorithmic Justice League to challenge racial and gender bias in AI. Her work exposed how facial recognition systems perform worst on women with darker skin. Because the training data was biased. The system followed suit. Her leadership pushed Big Tech to reform. Lesson: Data doesn’t lie, but it often reflects our existing biases. 3. Building Trust with Ethical Leadership Women leaders tend to drive more transparent, people-centered decision-making. This isn’t about being “soft.” It’s about building trust with users, teams, and the public. In the age of AI, where transparency is everything, this is a leadership advantage. 4. Better Representation When women lead data initiatives: Data models become more inclusive. Assumptions are challenged. Outcomes become more equitable. It’s not just a win for women, it’s a win for innovation and society at large. These wins aren’t unicorn stories. They’re evidence of what’s possible when we make space for women in data leadership. Grace Hopper (1906-1992) was never meant to “fit” the mold of a computer scientist. She was a math professor who joined the Navy and ended up working on some of the earliest computers in the world. Back then, computers spoke in numbers and switches. If you wanted them to do anything, you had to talk to them in raw machine code instead of words. Think "10110000 01100001" as opposed to 'PRINT "HELLO"'. Grace kept circling one question: Why should only mathematicians be able to talk to computers? Instead of forcing people to think like machines, she started building tools to make machines speak more like people. She helped create some of the first compilers, programs that translate human-like instructions into machine code, and she championed the idea of using words instead of cryptic symbols to program. Today, a huge amount of global banking and financial infrastructure still runs on COBOL, the language she helped bring into the world. Because of that shift, we now live in a world where: ➜ Developers write in human-readable languages instead of raw machine code ➜ Teams can build complex software in months, not lifetimes ➜ Everything from your phone’s operating system to the apps you use daily is built on layers of understandable, reusable abstractions She didn’t make computers less powerful.
