Can a sustainable bioeconomy emerge in the Amazon rainforest? A research faciltiy in Belém, Brazil, aims to accelerate the development of an Amazonian bioeconomy by transforming forest-based resources into high-value products, reports Sarah Brown. The Guamá Science and Technology Park (PCT), operating since 2010 and the first of its kind in the Brazilian Amazon, is developing products like honey-based spirits, digital glasses from local wood and jambu-infused medicine. The facility operates 12 laboratories, including the Amazon Oils Laboratory, "which produces natural oils and butters from plants and seeds found in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest for use in foods, cosmetics and health products for several large national and multinational companies," writes Brown. Brown writes that the effort is a step toward building a sustainable and thriving billion-dollar bioeconomy that provides local populations with alternatives to deforestation and increases the appeal of sustainably harvesting the region’s resources. What’s interesting about Dubai is the positioning. Not necessarily trying to compete on deep research alone. But acting as a connector. Between East and West. Between capital and innovation. Between research and commercialisation. For life sciences companies and talent, Dubai often starts as a regional base… But increasingly, it’s becoming a place where programmes are actually being built and scaled!

There are two paths for building ecosystems: organic founder-led growth and deliberate design. Qatar has chosen deliberate design and backed it with a $3B Fund of Funds. Instead of waiting decades for founders and capital to compound organically, Qatar adopted a Fund of Funds model led by Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) to attract global VCs. Platforms like Web Summit amplify this by pulling in attention, networks, and founders. Supporting entities such as Invest Qatar, Qatar Government Communications Office, Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) Authority, Qatar Development Bank, Startup Qatar, Qatar FinTech Hub, Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), Startup Grind Doha, and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology are building the infrastructure to absorb this inflow. At the same time, VCs like Rasmal Ventures, Golden Gate Ventures, Doha Tech Angels LLC, Utopia Capital Management, Builders VC, HUMAN CAPITAL, Deerfield Management, B Capital, Ion Pacific, Liberty City Ventures, Speedinvest, Shorooq, and Greycroft, Founders Circle Capital, and A-typical Ventures represent the layer shaping which companies get funded and scaled. This plugs Qatar into global networks of capital and decision-making, compressing years of ecosystem evolution into a shorter window. But it also changes the nature of the bet. Qatar is starting with the decision-makers, not founders. What we’re seeing today reflects an early development phase: • Activity is concentrated at pre-seed and seed • Public capital drives a significant share of momentum • Growth is strong, but from a small base This is pipeline creation, not maturity. The real question is what happens next. Ecosystems compound at retention. Companies need to stay and scale locally. Capital must extend beyond the early stages. Talent must anchor itself within the ecosystem. Without that, the risk is structural: capital flows in, companies pass through, and value accrues elsewhere. Qatar’s strategy is deliberate. Over the past years, a consistent pattern has emerged: 💻 Greater emphasis on semiconductors and chip design. 🤖 Stronger support for AI and digital transformation. 🔬 More investment in research and development. 🎓 Building a highly skilled workforce. 🏭 Moving manufacturing further up the value chain. 🧠 Rather than competing solely on labour costs, Vietnam is increasingly investing in knowledge, innovation and intellectual property. Saigon Hi-Tech Park already hosts many of the world's leading technology companies and has played a central role in establishing Vietnam as a trusted destination for advanced manufacturing. The next phase aims to complement that success with stronger R&D capabilities, technology transfer and home-grown innovation. 🏭 The greatest value in global technology supply chains is rarely created on the factory floor alone. It is created through: 🧠 Research. ⚙️ Engineering. 📐 Design. 💡 Innovation. Those are precisely the capabilities Vietnam is now seeking to develop. 🔁 For investors, this sends an encouraging signal.
