Designing learning that works for every mind. In preparation for our session at World of Learning in October, Emma Hutchins and I are asking neurodivergent learners to share the 'one thing' above all others that would improve their digital learning experience. Thanks so much to everyone who engaged with and contributed to our last LI post. The list below is what we have so far. But are we missing anything? We'd love to hear from you in the comments if your 'one thing' doesn't appear on our list. Content design and structure - Provide clear and consistent instructions throughout all learning materials. - Ensure a clear and logical content structure so information fits neatly into well-defined categories. - Avoid poor colour contrast and other design issues that contribute to sensory overload. - Avoid locked navigation controls (like 'Continue' buttons) unless it is obvious what needs to be completed to progress. Control over media and sensory input - If possible, avoid linking to external video sites (such as YouTube) unless the learner’s return path is clear and accessible. - Do not include moving or animated content unless learners can pause or stop it. - Allow learners to change the speed of video content (both slower and faster) to suit their processing needs. - Always provide transcripts for video and audio to offer choice in how content is accessed. - Give learners control over narration and audio - allow them to start, stop, or bypass it entirely. - Keep multimedia experiences manageable to avoid overstimulation from multi-sensory overload. Everywhere you look, vendors call out, each one pitching something crafted just for you: your favorite snacks, books you’ve been meaning to read, even music that brings back memories. Now, imagine if learning could feel like that—a place where everything is designed with your interests and preferences in mind. This isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. Recent research by Makransky, Wismer, and Mayer (2018) shows that something as simple as a gender-matched virtual agent in a VR learning environment can significantly boost student engagement, retention, and performance. In their study, middle school students who learned from avatars that matched their gender experienced stronger connections and better learning outcomes. Girls learned more effectively with a female scientist avatar, while boys excelled with a drone avatar—a subtle but powerful reminder of how much representation and identity matter in learning (Makransky, Wismer, & Mayer, 2018). Here’s why AI avatars and agents in virtual worlds could be the next big shift in education: Personalized Engagement: Much like the vendors that draw you in with exactly what you’re looking for, AI avatars can be customized to mirror each learner's demographic, and personality. An AI-driven virtual mentor that reflects students’ identities makes lessons feel relevant and personal, drawing students deeper into the material. Creating a Strong Social Connection: When students feel they’re learning alongside a “partner” rather than just consuming information, their motivation to learn skyrockets. AI avatars build this sense of social presence through responsive, conversational interactions that make students feel heard and supported, giving them the sense that they’re in a real exchange, not just a solo task. Dynamic Support and Challenge: Like a skilled teacher who reads the room, AI avatars adapt their feedback and guidance based on real-time data, challenging students who are excelling and supporting those who may struggle. Inclusive Representation: Just as diversity in a marketplace invites everyone to feel they belong, AI avatars can be designed to reflect diverse backgrounds, genders, and experiences. The findings from Makransky, Wismer, and Mayer (2018) underscore a critical takeaway: when learning feels personal, students learn better. We expect a harvest of ideas without considering the environment. I have seen a lack of structure cause brilliant minds to wither. If your meeting requires tracking moving faces, reading a scrolling chat, and watching a dense slide deck all at once, you are not hosting a meeting. You are creating a sensory storm.
