But across all future‑of‑work scenarios, one theme is constant: career professionals become essential guides in helping people adapt, reskill, and stay employable. Here are four strategies our field must lean into as we prepare workers for what’s ahead: 1/ Build adaptability as a core career skill In futures where AI accelerates quickly, the workers who thrive are the ones who can pivot, learn, and re‑learn. Career practitioners can help clients: ➤ Normalize nonlinear paths ➤ Strengthen learning agility ➤ Reframe change as a strategic advantage Adaptability is no longer a nice to have. It’s employability. 2/ Elevate human skills to premium status In the co‑pilot economy, AI augments skills like judgment, communication, empathy, and relationship‑building. Career practitioners can help clients: ➤ Spotlight these strengths ➤ Articulate skills with clarity and confidence These are the skills AI can’t replicate, and employers increasingly know it. 3/ Advocate for reskilling before it’s urgent When organizations delay reskilling, workers in routine roles fall behind fast. Career practitioners can help clients: ➤ Push for proactive upskilling programs ➤ Help workers identify early signals of role disruption ➤ Guide clients toward future‑proof skill pathways Waiting until displacement happens is too late. 4/ Help clients navigate emerging roles In high‑innovation futures, entirely new job categories appear, often before language exists to describe them. Career professionals can help clients: ➤ Spot emerging patterns ➤ Translate transferable skills into new domains ➤ Experiment with “proto‑roles” shaped by AI We need curiosity, frameworks, and a willingness to explore to help people move forward.     America’s labor market is dealing with a paradox: new graduates cannot find the jobs they expected, while employers cannot find the workers they need. A recent story in the The Washington Post brings us back to the basics: human capital. Recent graduates are struggling with entry-level hiring, especially in fields where employers are demanding more experience, stronger technical skills, or different credentials than many students have. At the same time, the U.S. is facing a broader worker shortage driven by demographics, skills mismatch, and declining labor-force growth. From 2024 to 2032, more than 18 million college-educated workers are projected to leave the labor force, while fewer than 14 million will enter it. Some, like the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown, project a gap of 4.6 million workers. Lightcast puts the deficit closer to 6 million (and my take is the latter is probably closer to the truth). The article points to shortages in nursing, teaching, engineering, pharmacy, construction, mental health, and airplane mechanics. These are not jobs that AI can simply replace. Many require judgment, licensing, physical presence, hands-on skill, and trust. The semiconductor example is especially salient. That industry is projected to grow by nearly 115,000 jobs by 2030, but that is 67,000 more than the current and projected supply of technicians and engineers. The education system is not aligned with this reality. College enrollment in 2023 was down nearly 2 million students from its 2010 peak. Meanwhile, too many students are clustered in fields with weaker demand while too few are entering health care, technical trades, advanced manufacturing, and other shortage areas. We need better career guidance before college, stronger applied pathways during college, more apprenticeships, faster credentialing, better transfer routes, immigration policy that rewards proper and skilled entry, and much closer coordination between employers and education providers. AI adds so many more nuances to an already complicated situation. But it will not solve a demographic shortage, repair credential mismatch, or train the next generation of nurses, technicians, teachers, welders, and engineers by itself.     The RECF Leadership Journal 5/11/2026 – Talent Implications from the Delayed "Great Wealth Transfer” The “Great Wealth Transfer” is projected to move between $84T-$124T in assets from Baby Boomers to younger generations over the next two decades. But one major dynamic is changing the timing and impact of that transition: Baby Boomers are living longer, working longer, and staying in leadership positions longer than previous generations. That has massive implications for workforce mobility, executive succession, and talent retention. For decades, the Aerospace & Defense industry has depended on institutional knowledge, long career tenures, and leadership continuity. Many Baby Boomers built careers around loyalty, stability, and identity through work. Gen X largely followed a similar path, valuing career progression and corporate advancement. Millennials and Gen Z are different. Younger generations increasingly prioritize: • Flexibility and work-life balance • Purpose-driven careers • Entrepreneurship and side ventures • Financial independence earlier in life • Skills portability over lifetime employment At the same time, younger professionals face a very different economic reality. Baby Boomers now hold over half of U.S. household wealth and approximately 54% of stock ownership, while Millennials and Gen Z continue to struggle with housing affordability, student debt, and slower wealth accumulation. The result? Many younger employees in Aerospace & Defense see slower promotion timelines, delayed executive openings, and fewer opportunities to influence strategy because senior leaders are remaining in roles longer. But the next phase may be even more disruptive. As generational wealth eventually transfers, many Millennials and Gen Z professionals may no longer feel economically dependent on traditional corporate career paths. Some will leave to: • Launch businesses • Invest in startups • Pursue technology, AI, energy, or commercial space opportunities • Prioritize lifestyle and autonomy over corporate advancement That creates a potential future talent gap for Aerospace & Defense companies already competing for engineering, manufacturing, cyber, AI, and program leadership talent.     The World Economic Forum mapped out 4 versions of your career by 2030. None of them end well if you're not preparing. In January 2026, the WEF published "Four Futures for Jobs in the New Economy: AI and Talent in 2030": a white paper consolidating views from Chief Strategy Officers and global experts on exactly how AI and workforce readiness will reshape jobs by 2030. Here are the 4 scenarios: 1️⃣ Scenario 1: Supercharged Progress Exponential AI breakthroughs reshape industries. Productivity soars. Many jobs disappear, but new occupations emerge fast with humans directing portfolios of capable machines and becoming "agent orchestrators." This is the best-case scenario. And it only applies to people who are AI-ready. 2️⃣ Scenario 2: Age of Displacement Exponential AI advancement outpaces the capacity of the workforce to adapt. Businesses race to automate, displacing workers faster than education and reskilling systems can respond. The share of tasks absorbed by technology surpasses 50%, approaching 90% in high-exposure sectors. This is where unprepared professionals land. 3️⃣ Scenario 3: Co-Pilot Economy Gradual AI progress and AI-ready skillsets shift the focus towards augmentation rather than mass automation. Human-AI teams reshape value chains. By 2030, more than 40% of skills have changed. Hybrid roles combining AI knowledge and domain expertise expand. The most realistic scenario for people investing in skills today. 4️⃣ Scenario 4: Stalled Progress Steady AI meets a workforce lacking critical skills. Gains concentrate within businesses and geographies with AI expertise, while others face eroding competitiveness. Early-career jobs and administrative tasks are particularly exposed to AI-driven replacement, with labour market entry pathways narrowing. This is what happens when you wait and watch. Scenarios 2 and 4 are not going to happen to people who are actively upskilling. They're going to happen to people who assume their current role is safe because it always has been. The WEF's own "no-regret" strategies for any scenario include: align technology and talent strategies, invest in human-AI collaboration, and anticipate talent needs before the gaps appear.     Generative AI is about to disrupt the job market. By 2030, there will be a new set of opportunities and challenges created in the job market. Opportunities include Healthcare and STEM occupations. 1. Healthcare: Already grappling with 1.9M unfilled positions as of April 2023, the sector is poised for explosive growth. By 2030, we are looking at a demand surge for 3.5M jobs in health aides, technicians, and wellness roles, and an additional 2M for healthcare professionals. 2. STEM: Despite the tech layoffs making 2023 headlines, the long-term demand remains robust. By 2030, a whopping 23% increase in STEM jobs is on the horizon. Industries across the board, from banking to healthcare, are undergoing digital transformations, amplifying the need for advanced tech talent. On the Decline: 3. Office Support, Customer Service, & Food Services: Automation is reshaping the job landscape. Estimates point to a dip in demand for clerks (1.6M jobs), retail salespersons (830K), administrative assistants (710K), and cashiers (630K) by 2030. The reason? These roles involve tasks that automated systems excel at. 4. Production Jobs: Even with a US manufacturing sector upswing, traditional production roles are seeing a decline, making way for skilled technical and digital roles. The Big Transition: Approximately 11.8M workers in shrinking demand occupations might need to pivot by 2030. Roughly 9M workers may wind up moving into different occupational categories altogether. That's a seismic shift, with occupational transitions 25% higher than previous estimates.
