Most people think growth is linear. With steady effort it’s steady results. But real structural transformation rarely works like that. It often follows a “J-curve”: slow, sometimes invisible progress first… and sharp acceleration later. A powerful example of this pattern over the past decade is Uttar Pradesh. Phase 1 - The Investment Dip (the downward curve) The state focused on long - term capacity building: expressways, airports, freight corridors, logistics parks, and governance reforms. Capital expenditure alone doubled - heavy upfront investment, even when immediate output gains weren’t visible. Phase 2 - The Turning Point As infrastructure stabilised, private capital began flowing in at scale. Investment proposals crossed ₹50 lakh crore, with ₹31.77 lakh crore MoUs signed at investment summits - a classic J-curve inflection point. Phase 3 - The Acceleration (the upward surge) Now the output tells the story: • State economy expanded 2.2× • Per-capita income doubled • Number of factories doubled - deeper industrial capacity • Exports more than doubled - rising global competitiveness Structural growth often looks slow in the beginning but unstoppable later. J-curve development rewards patience. Building Quest to $1B taught me that progress and survival are two different things. Most founders don't know the difference. You're adding subscribers every month. Revenue is up. The team is excited. You're making progress. But you're also dying. Progress means you're moving forward. Rate of progress means you're moving forward fast enough to survive. Big difference. Let me show you what this looks like… Your financial model says you need 3,700 users in six months to avoid running out of money. You're adding 100 users per month. That's progress. That's also a death sentence. You need exponential growth. You're on a linear trajectory. The math doesn't care about effort. It doesn't care about progress. It only cares about whether you hit the number before the money runs out. This is what I call a mortality event. Most founders celebrate the 100 users per month. They see growth and think they're winning. They're not tracking rate of progress. They're not asking: "Am I moving fast enough?" By the time they realize the answer is no, it's too late. Here's the framework to fix this: 1. Calculate your mortality timeline Pull up your financials right now. How much runway do you have? How much revenue do you need to break even or raise your next round? Convert that into a specific number with a deadline. Not "we need to grow." "We need 3,700 paying customers by June 30th or we're dead." Write that number down. That's your North Star. 2. Work backward to your required rate If you need 3,700 users in 6 months, you need 617 per month. If you're currently adding 100 per month, you have a 517-user gap. Every single month. This is your required rate of progress. Not your current rate. Your required rate. 3. Audit your current trajectory Are you linear or exponential? If your model demands exponential growth and you're growing linearly, you don't have a scaling problem. You have a survival problem. Plot your last 90 days. Is the line going up fast enough? If not, you have two choices: fix the growth engine or shut it down before you burn more cash. 4. Stop celebrating irrelevant wins Adding subscribers is great. But if you're celebrating 100 new users when you need 617, you're lying to yourself. Progress that doesn't match your required rate is just expensive motion. This isn't motivational. It's math. You can be growing and still be dying. You can have momentum and still miss your window. You can celebrate every small win and still run out of money. Log charts are a great lens for spotting structural breakpoints in a business. If you want to sell growth and growth stories, rule number one is to plot your values on a linear scale. Things will look wild. That wildness in the linear world quickly comes down to earth when values are transformed to a log scale. The transformation is ideal for exponential growth, trends, and structural breakpoints, because a straight line in log space represents constant growth. And investing outcomes are all about growth dynamics. To show why this matters in equity investing, I have plotted 12‑month rolling revenue for Tesla and Microsoft on a log scale since Q4 2016. What we observe is that in early 2023, Tesla’s business loses momentum extremely fast. You see it clearly on the log scale, but there is another trick in the toolbox. If you fit a simple linear model on the log values – in this case from Q4 2016 to Q4 2022 – then you can extrapolate the trend into the future. The assumption is that the growth dynamic continues at the same growth rate. The difference between realized values and model values after the model fit is the model’s error. When the autocorrelation in these errors explodes (negative values are followed by negative values, and positive by positive), the model is misspecified. There is basically a structural growth breakpoint. You see this clearly for Tesla. Now, Elon Musk took over Twitter in October 2022 and the brand‑damage path started. At exactly the same time, competition from Chinese EV makers increased dramatically. The problem we are facing is what is called a causal attribution problem. We only observe the outcome (drastically slowing growth) and Musk’s brand damage plus rising Chinese competition. We do not see an alternative world with no Twitter takeover and weaker Chinese competition. In any case, the analysis shows that by 2023 something serious had changed. For Microsoft, the story is a bit different. We apply the exact same model and see clearly the growth slowdown after the post‑pandemic reopening, following a period of strong growth. Microsoft’s revenue is currently behind the trend from 2016–2022, but the model errors have stabilised, showing that growth is now back on par with the trend growth. Several critical implications emerge, particularly for economic growth, geopolitical dynamics, and urbanization: 1. Asia’s Population Plateau and Africa’s Rise • India is set to peak around 2050 at 1.68 billion, stabilizing slightly lower by 2100 at 1.51 billion. Meanwhile, China’s population will sharply decline by 55% by the century’s end, primarily due to sustained low fertility and an aging demographic. • Africa emerges as a major demographic hub, with countries like Nigeria, DRC, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Egypt moving up significantly in global population ranks. Nigeria alone is projected to nearly double its population by 2050 and surpass the US. 2. Economic Growth and Workforce Dynamics • Economies such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and DRC could benefit enormously from a demographic dividend if—and only if—they manage to rapidly improve healthcare, education, governance, and infrastructure. However, without these crucial investments, the same demographic potential could translate into severe socioeconomic stress, including high unemployment, poverty, and political instability. • Conversely, aging nations like China and Japan will face shrinking workforces and increasing dependency ratios, potentially slowing GDP growth significantly unless offset by automation, productivity improvements, or immigration. 3. Urbanization and Climate Risks • Rapid population growth in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia will accelerate urbanization, dramatically increasing pressure on housing, sanitation, transport, and energy infrastructure. Urban planning in cities such as Lagos, Kinshasa, Mumbai, and Karachi will be critical. • Climate vulnerability will compound these challenges, especially in rapidly growing but institutionally fragile contexts. Without urgent investments in climate resilience and adaptive infrastructure, urban poverty and inequality could deepen, risking social cohesion. 4. Geopolitical Realignment • Declining population trajectories in China and stabilization in India suggest shifts in geopolitical power dynamics, especially if India successfully harnesses its demographic advantage through effective education, job creation, and innovation. • The emergence of populous African states as significant global players could reshape international relations, trade flows, and investment patterns. But their geopolitical weight will depend significantly on institutional stability, governance reforms, and economic integration. The world is poised for profound shifts, with the center of gravity potentially pivoting from East Asia toward South Asia and Africa. I recently reviewed my Google Scholar citation pattern and decided to experiment by asking ChatGPT to interpret both the numbers and the research themes behind them. It was interesting to see that the analysis went beyond counting citations. It identified how my research focus has evolved over time, how the citation curve aligns with career transitions, and how the trajectory reflects broader shifts in my scientific identity. Looking back, the early phase of my work was centered around classical bioinformatics, NGS workflows, and foundational computational genomics. Over time, this evolved into more translational research such as pharmacogenomics and clinical variant interpretation. In the most recent phase, the focus shifted toward microbiome research, metagenomics, multi-omics integration, and biomarker discovery. The citation pattern reflected this timeline. The peak in previous years aligned with the maturity of earlier research themes. The temporary dip aligned with moving institutions, establishing new networks, and defining a new research ecosystem. The recent upward trend suggests the start of a new growth phase as ongoing collaborations, new datasets, and emerging research directions begin to translate into publications and measurable impact. This is not yet an impressive outcome, but it is a meaningful one. And I anticipate stronger growth in the coming years as projects mature and collaborations in the UAE and GCC expand. One takeaway from this exercise is that it is always useful to trace back your scientific outcomes and interpret them. Do not look only at the h-index or citation totals. Patterns tell a story. Understanding timelines, research transitions, and context helps refine the next strategic direction. For me, this was not just a self-reflection. It was a reminder that AI can support strategic thinking in academia, not only writing or summarization. It can help us analyze where our research has been, clarify where it is going, and shape how we plan future contribution and impact.
