Yesterday I got a comment about Epic, and so many people had questions about Epic jobs. It’s not straightforward, but it’s definitely possible to get into. There are many types of Epic modules, like Willow (Pharmacy), Resolute (Billing), Cupid (Cardiology), OpTime (Surgery), Beacon (Oncology), Cadence (Scheduling), and EpicCare Ambulatory (Clinicals). You really need to be sure which module or path you want to take. For example, I have a pharmacy degree, so if I want to dive deeper into Epic, I would start with Willow, this could open doors and help me grow in the future. Getting an Epic job is not easy; it often requires sponsorship by an organization, hands-on experience, or working in a hospital or behavioral health center. Most Epic certifications are provided through your employer, and you rarely get access independently. One way to get into Epic is to apply for entry-level positions that say “Epic certification preferred, not required.” Many of these roles provide Epic certification within 6 months of hire, making it a great way to start building experience. Even for these roles, employers often look for some healthcare or EHR experience showing superuser experience or involvement in EHR projects can boost your chances. Epic isn’t just for clinicians, there are roles for analysts, trainers, technical support, project managers, and reporting specialists. So even if your background isn’t purely clinical, you might find a path that aligns with your skills. Choosing a module wisely is important based on your background and career goals, and once certified, you can often cross-train into other modules or move into superuser, trainer, or project management roles. Networking also helps a lot. Connecting with current Epic users or alumni on LinkedIn, attending healthcare IT meetups, or joining Epic-focused online groups can provide inside tips on openings, training, and module selection. In today’s era, healthcare is not simply about medicines and doctors diagnosing diseases. Rather, there is a whole lot of technology involved in every step. From, doctor's consultation to disease diagnosis and treatment technology has become an integral part that requires the involvement of good engineers in action whose contribution would be nothing less than a doctor. 📍 My years of experience tell me about the following few ways in which the medical industry is innovating more: 1. Health Data analyst and Informatics Specialist: Think of yourself as someone good at analyzing different data. Using your tech prowess to organize and analyze a patient's data of medical history helps doctors make data-driven decisions and ultimately, improve patient care. You will also be able to unearth hidden patterns in patient data to optimize healthcare delivery. 2. Telemedicine Specialist: Telehealth is changing the game. As a Telemedicine Specialist, you'll use technology to connect with patients remotely, providing diagnoses, consultations, and even prescriptions – all virtually! 3. Healthcare App Developer: Innovate more healthcare apps. Craft user-friendly, secure healthcare apps that empower patients and streamline care delivery. 4. Medical Device Technologist: They develop, test, evaluate, and troubleshoot medical devices, ensuring they meet regulatory standards and function properly for patient care. They may also provide technical support to doctors and other healthcare providers. 5. Biomedical device engineering: They collaborate with doctors and scientists to understand medical needs, and then create innovative solutions like prosthetics, diagnostic tools, or imaging equipment. Their work ensures these devices are safe, effective, and user-friendly for both patients and medical professionals. 6. Hospital Management: Managing a hospital includes keeping a check on the flow of services, planning, coordination, and supervision of various aspects of healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations. Don’t forget that healthcare IT is much bigger than Epic. I’ve talked with a lot of people who are interested in getting into Epic but feel discouraged because so many positions want candidates who are already certified and experienced. And I understand why. Epic is a huge platform with a lot of career opportunities, but sponsorship for certification can be limited, and many organizations are looking for analysts who can step into a role with existing Epic experience. But I want to encourage people not to let that narrow their view of healthcare IT. Epic is only one part of a much larger healthcare technology ecosystem. After more than 14 years working in healthcare IT, I’ve had the opportunity to work with or around many different clinical applications, third-party systems, devices, instruments, and technologies that support patient care. And many of these systems integrate with Epic or operate alongside it. Think about areas such as: 🔹 Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) 🔹 Pharmacy systems and automation, such as Pyxis and Omnicell 🔹 PACS and medical imaging applications 🔹 Clinical documentation and dictation platforms, such as Dragon 🔹 Cardiology applications 🔹 Surgical and anesthesia systems 🔹 Medication administration technologies 🔹 Medical devices and clinical instruments 🔹 Reference laboratory systems 🔹 Middleware and interface engines 🔹 Patient monitoring systems 🔹 Revenue cycle and other downstream applications 🔹 Other EHR platforms such as Oracle Health/Cerner and MEDITECH There are hundreds of applications and technologies involved in delivering healthcare, and each one needs people who understand how to configure, support, integrate, test, implement, and optimize them. And there are multiple paths into this work. 💻 Coming from IT? Look at clinical application support, systems analyst roles, interfaces, integrations, infrastructure, or application teams supporting clinical workflows. 🩺 Coming from a clinical background? Your clinical knowledge can be incredibly valuable when transitioning into application support. Understanding how clinicians actually use technology is a skill that can be difficult to teach. 🔬 Working in a specialized area? Laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, cardiology, surgery, and other clinical departments all have technology supporting their workflows. So if you’re struggling to get your foot in the door with Epic, don’t assume that means healthcare IT isn’t for you. Don’t focus so much on getting into Epic that you overlook the entire ecosystem surrounding it. After yesterday’s post on the roles that make healthcare AI actually work… a lot of people asked me the next question: “Okay—but who’s actually hiring for this?” Short answer? Almost everyone. But not always in the way you’d expect. Health systems are hiring clinical informaticists, data leaders, and integration roles—but they’re calling it “optimization,” “transformation,” or “digital strategy.” Big tech is hiring aggressively—but they’re looking for people who understand clinical workflows, not just models. Startups are moving fast—but the ones gaining traction all have one thing in common: they’re building around real care delivery, not just technology. And consulting firms? They’re quietly scaling teams to help health systems fix the exact gaps we’ve been talking about—workflow, data, and adoption. Here’s what I’m seeing clearly: The market isn’t just looking for “AI talent.” It’s looking for people who can connect the dots. Clinical + Data + Workflow + Technology Because that’s where most organizations are stuck. They don’t need another tool. They need someone who can walk in and say: → This is where the workflow breaks → This is where the data fails → This is why adoption isn’t happening And more importantly… how to fix it.
