Are you sure they have 12.6GW of compute, or is that just very optimistic projections that they are passing as finished?
Despite everything documented in the article, things have never been better for freedom of speech. Back in the pre-social media days, people couldn't share their ideas to a mass audience unless they owned a newspaper or a TV station, or could convince someone who did. Information was effectively controlled by an elite class of journalists. Now even the most authoritarian governments are powerless to stop beliefs from spreading.
Has that made the world better? The POTUS keeps threatening to annex Greenland and Canada, USAID has been illegally shut down by a billionaire based on conspiratorial nonsense, a right wing influencer got shot in the head in public nearly a year ago and people barely cared because that's basically expected now. None of that would be thinkable 20 years ago.
I know no one wants to argue against freedom of speech, but empirical evidence is also important, and those two things seem to be clashing right now.
