    Norway is exploring innovative methods to repurpose decommissioned offshore oil platforms into sustainable ventures. One striking example is the concept of converting these old oil rigs into eco-hotels or marine research hubs that are powered by renewable energy, particularly wave energy or offshore wind. This approach supports the circular economy, reducing the need for expensive and environmentally taxing decommissioning of these massive structures. Instead of dismantling them, which is costly and energy-intensive, these rigs are being reimagined as floating resorts, contributing to both eco-tourism and clean energy awareness. The idea aligns with Norway’s broader environmental goals, especially its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable technologies. Norway already has significant investments in offshore wind, wave energy, and ocean innovation, and turning oil rigs into hotels is an extension of this green vision. These eco-hotels are designed with sustainability in mind—featuring solar panels, desalination systems, and waste recycling setups—while offering tourists a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the open sea. Guests may enjoy underwater views, marine activities, and immersive education on marine conservation. While still in the early conceptual or pilot stages (with various architectural designs proposed by firms like H2 Offshore and associations with Oceanix and Shell), this idea is gaining traction not just in Norway, but globally—showcasing how industrial infrastructure can be reimagined for a greener future.

    A new wave is emerging in hospitality: nature-based design. Hotels don’t just have an energy problem, they have a design problem. The solution is not about inventing something new, but rediscovering what our ancestors already knew. For thousands of years, buildings worked with nature instead of against it: 🌞 Following the sun to stay warm in winter 🌬️ Using natural ventilation to stay cool in summer 🌱 Building with local materials that breathe and last for centuries 💧 Harvesting rainwater and reusing it in daily life 🕯️ Maximizing daylight to reduce artificial light 🔇 Valuing silence, with thick walls and layouts that created calm This is a topic I’m passionate about and follow closely. Visionary architects and sustainability thinkers are pushing the idea even further: not just sustainable buildings, but autonomous ones, self-sufficient ecosystems that generate energy, recycle water, grow food, and integrate with nature. The implications for hotels are enormous. Imagine properties that don’t just minimize their footprint, but operate as living systems, producing resources instead of consuming them, while offering guests a healthier, more authentic experience. While fully autonomous hotels are still rare, we’re already seeing properties take important steps: minimizing footprints, producing part of their energy, integrating green infrastructure. Guest expectations are evolving. Hospitality that merely “reduces harm” is no longer enough, the next frontier is hospitality that regenerates. Some solutions are simple and universal. Rainwater harvesting, for example, can dramatically reduce water use while connecting guests with natural cycles. And there are pioneers pointing the way forward: 🌊 Eco-Floating Hotel (HAADS): a futuristic concept designed to rotate with ocean currents, generating energy, recycling water and integrating circular systems, showing how autonomy could extend offshore. 🌆 Parkroyal Collection Pickering (Singapore): an urban “hotel in a garden” with 15,000 m² of sky gardens, green walls, rainwater harvesting and bioclimatic design, proving that even dense cities can host buildings that function as living ecosystems. ❄️ Svart (Norway, Arctic Circle): designed to be completely off-grid and energy-positive, producing more energy than it consumes while operating as a circular ecosystem. Guests are noticing. Sustainability and wellness are no longer “extras”, they are expectations. At Surf Office, we see MICE groups increasingly prioritize hotels that optimize energy and water use and communicate it authentically. 💡 The opportunity is clear: hotels that embrace nature-based and autonomous design don’t just save resources, they create more meaningful, restorative guest experiences. 👉 Do you think autonomous hotels will become mainstream in hospitality, or remain the exception rather than the rule? 🌍 Beyond market trends, should this be optional, or a responsibility if we want to preserve our planet?

    🌱 Mapping Bali’s Eco Resort Footprint: Where Nature Meets Strategy As eco-tourism grows, so does the need to understand where eco resorts are located — and why. We analyzed a dataset of leading eco resorts across Bali, geocoded their locations, and calculated a mean geographic center. We then examined how far each resort lies from this "gravity point" — revealing surprising insights about development patterns and positioning. 📍 Key Findings: The mean center of Bali’s eco resort supply lies in central-south Bali, near Tabanan/Gianyar border. Yet 0 resorts are within 5 km of this point — they’re spread outward, by design. Over 60% of all eco resorts are 10–40 km away — concentrated in places like Munduk, Sidemen, north Ubud, and eastern valleys 📊 What This Tells Us: ✅ Eco resorts are intentionally decentralized — favoring elevation, seclusion, and ecological immersion ✅ The map shows a hub-and-spoke pattern — a core reference point surrounded by thoughtfully placed developments ✅ Most are located in areas with rich environmental appeal, but still within 1–2 hours of core infrastructure 🛠️ Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Developers can identify under-penetrated eco zones 2️⃣ Planners can shape zoning and sustainability guidelines with spatial intelligence 3️⃣ Investors can evaluate eco authenticity and regional balance 4️⃣ Tourism boards can better market “eco corridors” across Bali 📍 True eco-tourism is not only about green design — it’s also about geographic logic. 📎 (Source: PT Hotel Investasi Strategis) #EcoTourism #SustainableTravel #BaliResorts #HotelDevelopment #TourismStrategy #GeospatialAnalysis #HospitalityPlanning #EcoLodges #SustainabilityLeadership

    Sustainability at Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Limited: A Progressive Approach I’ve been visiting Club Mahindra resorts for years, and I’ve always admired their commitment to sustainability. Their eco-friendly initiatives, from solar panels to CHUK tableware, glass bottles, and electric cars, have set them apart. On my recent visit, I noticed even more exciting changes. 1. Wooden Room Keys: The first surprise was receiving a wooden room key instead of plastic. This small change reduces plastic usage and aligns with the resort’s focus on using natural materials. 2. Expanded Solar Panel Installation: The resort has significantly increased its solar panels, with panels now installed on the roofs of parking lots and other key areas. This boosts energy efficiency and reduces the carbon footprint. 3. Bamboo-Based Products: Club Mahindra has switched to bamboo tissues and toilet rolls, which are Tree-Free, more absorbent, chlorine-free, and compostable. Bamboo is an excellent alternative to wood—it grows quickly without the need for fertilizers, making it a sustainable choice for the resort. 4. Wooden Room Inserts: Wooden inserts replace plastic in the rooms, cutting down on plastic waste and promoting the use of renewable resources. 5. Use of CHUK Tableware: For over 3 years, Club Mahindra has used CHUK tableware, promoting eco-friendly materials. These products are compostable and help reduce plastic waste in the hospitality sector. My recent visit to Club Mahindra showcased their progress in adopting sustainable practices. From solar energy to bamboo products, sustainability is clearly at the heart of their operations. These changes prove that small actions can make a huge impact on the environment. Club Mahindra sets a great example for others, showing that sustainability is not just a choice—it’s a way of life.
