Google’s AI-powered Flood Hub now provides riverine flood forecasts in 100+ countries, which reach communities of ~700 million people. Drones with AI vision now detect survivors in collapsed buildings and flood zones. Autonomous robots assist firefighters by navigating hazardous areas that no human could safely enter. Bigger forces like UN Global Pulse, Google DeepMind, and startups such as CrisisAI and BlackBerry AtHoc are embedding AI into global crisis resilience frameworks. In that moment, 18 years of diplomatic training kicked in—not panic, but protocols. This is why your crisis team needs someone who's lived through actual crises. I love crisis communications. Those who know me have probably heard me say that before. 😬 Why? Because crisis is where the value of communications is felt most acutely – and where it comes down to a mix of experience, gut instinct, tactical judgment and the disciplined execution of your crisis strategy – and, yes, intuition too – more than anywhere else. Especially when external shocks hit. But there's another category of corporate crisis – one that, fortunately, never grows into a full reputational event. These situations are just as complex, often requiring even more effort – yet they can be quietly frustrating for communicators, because the result is simply a non-event. The headline that never ran. The story that wasn't picked up. The comment that was never written. Navigating these moments takes real finesse – and the outcome almost always rests on trust relationships built over many years with key stakeholders. So what does any of this have to do with AI? First, the obvious: in a crisis, personal, human relationships are invaluable. Second, and more interesting: it's fascinating to see how AI is beginning to support crisis communications - and how AI agents are navigating crises themselves. Researchers at King's College showed that AI models tend to resolve conflict through escalation. Cold logic. No emotion. Does that mean AI can't handle a crisis? Not at all. AI can deliver real value in crisis situations: AI can synthesize signals across systems, markets and media in real-time, detecting early warning signs long before they surface publicly, improving preparation for high-risk events and emerging crises It enables communicators to walk through the most important scenarios in advance at a depth and speed that was not possible before – so that when crisis hits, you show up having already thought it through It can suggest and stress-test response options, map second- and third-order consequences, and model how different narratives land with different stakeholders – faster and more comprehensively than any human team Which brings me back to those situations that never become reputational crises. Can AI help us there too? Yes and no. Where there is no data, AI cannot learn from nothing. And because it must work from available data – which typically assumes escalation – it tends to overestimate risk. And that's exactly when the human edge becomes most valuable. When to let a narrative run its course or silence is still the right strategy. That judgment cannot be automated. AI simply does not understand the concept of de-escalation. Not yet. Because thanks to combinatorial creativity, AI can begin to detect patterns from seemingly unrelated domains and transfer them to new situations. It's a genuinely exciting approach – and I'm very curious to see where it leads. So here's the question I keep coming back to: What kind of AI support would you most want in a crisis communications situation?
