✈️ 🇪🇺 « Trustworthy AI in Defence »: The European Way 🗞️The European Defence Agency’s White Paper is out! At a time when global powers are racing to develop & deploy AI-enabled defence capabilities, the European way =tech innovation + ethical responsibility, operational effectiveness + legal compliance, strategic autonomy + respect for human dignity & democratic values. 🔹AI in defence as legally compliant, ethically sound, technically robust, societally acceptable. 1 🤝🏻Principles of Trustworthiness 🔹foundational principles for trustworthy AI in defence: accountability, reliability, transparency, explainability, fairness, privacy, human oversight. Not optional but integral to the legitimacy of AI systems used by European armed forces. 2. Ethical and Legal Compliance 🔹 Europe’s commitment is to effective military capabilities but also to a rules-based international order. The EU explicitly rejects the idea that technological advancement justifies the erosion of ethical norms. 🔹 importance of ethical review mechanisms, institutional safeguards, alignment with #EU legal frameworks=a legal-ethical backbone ensuring trustworthiness is a practical requirement embedded into every phase of AI development/deployment. 3. Risk Assessment & Mitigation 🔹 EU’s precautionary principle=>rigorous & ongoing risk assessments of AI systems, incl. risks related to technical failures, misuse, bias, and unintended escalation in operational contexts. To anticipate harm before it materializes and equip systems with built-in safeguards 🔹Risk mitigation not only a technical task but an ethical &strategic imperative in high-stakes domains (targeting, threat detection, autonomous mobility). 4. 👁️Human Oversight & Control 🔹The EU rejects fully autonomous weapon systems operating without human intervention in critical functions like the use of force. The Paper calls for clear human-in-the-loop models, where operators retain oversight, intervention capability, and accountability. = safeguards democratic accountability & operational reliability, ensuring no algorithm makes life-and-death decisions. 5. Transparency and Explainability 🔹transparent #AI systems, not black-box models : decision-making processes understandable by users & traceable by designers. Key for after-action reviews, audits, & compliance. Strong stance on explainability 6. European Cooperation &Standardization 🔹Enhanced cooperation and harmonization in defence AI : shared definitions, frameworks to ensure interoperability, avoid duplication, promote a common culture of responsibility. 🔹 joint work on certification processes, training, testing environments 7. Continuous Monitoring and Evaluation 🔹ongoing monitoring, validation, recalibration of AI tools throughout their deployment. «trustworthiness must be maintained, not assumed » =The European way: lead not by imitating others’ race toward automation at any cost, but by demonstrating security, innovation, and values can go hand in hand

I don’t actually work in finance. I work in trust. Without it, capital markets collapse. Clients walk away. Careers end in minutes. I've watched brilliant finance professionals destroy their careers in minutes. Not because they lacked technical skills, but because they crossed ethical lines they didn't fully understand. The CFA Institute Code of Ethics stopped me cold when I first read Standard III.A: "Members must act for the benefit of their clients and place their clients' interests before their employer's or their own interests." Before your employer. Before yourself. Always. In an industry built on conflicts of interest, this isn't just radical. It's revolutionary. The standards create crystal-clear boundaries: → Market manipulation? Prohibited. → Client suitability? Mandatory assessment. → Conflicts of interest? Full disclosure required. → Material nonpublic information? Can't touch it. But what really struck me was Standard V.B.5: "Distinguish between fact and opinion." In a world drowning in financial noise, this simple requirement changes everything. 200,000+ CFA charterholders worldwide have sworn to uphold these standards. Not suggestions. Requirements. When everyone else chases commissions, you're bound to put clients first. When others blur the lines, you maintain clear boundaries. When the industry rewards complexity, you're required to communicate clearly. Finance without ethics is just sophisticated gambling with other people's money. But finance with a moral compass? That's how you build trust that compounds over decades. The Code doesn't make you rich overnight. It makes you trustworthy for life. And in finance, trust is the only currency that never depreciates. Every time you're tempted to cut corners, remember: Your reputation takes decades to build and seconds to destroy. The real edge in finance isn't finding the next alpha. It's earning trust and keeping it. Now, since we are on LinkedIn, I have a question for you: Are today’s finfluencers held to the same ethical standards as CFA charterholders? Should they be? PS. Europe’s digital sovereignty is under urgent pressure—not from direct confrontation, but from dependence on foreign technologies that shapes everything from raw materials to AI. As U.S.-China tensions mount and the race for AI accelerates, Europe can no longer afford a patchwork approach. The EuroStack offers a holistic blueprint—a layer-by-layer rebuild of Europe’s technological backbone, aligned to Europe’s ethical and democratic values like privacy, self-determination, and sustainability. EuroStack isn’t protectionism—it’s sovereignty. The alternative? A digital colony, with hollowed-out industries, citizens under foreign surveillance, and climate goals beholden to monopolies. We have the tools. We have the talent. Now we need the will to innovate—our way. Culture is everything 🙏🏾 When leaders accept or overlook poor behaviour, they implicitly endorse those actions, potentially eroding the organisation’s values and morale. To build a thriving culture, leaders must actively shape it by refusing to tolerate behaviour that contradicts their values and expectations. The best leaders: 1. Define and Communicate Core Values: * Articulate Expectations: Clearly define and communicate the organisation’s core values and behavioural expectations. Make these values central to every aspect of the organisation’s operations and culture. * Embed Values in Policies: Integrate these values into your policies, procedures, and performance metrics to ensure they are reflected in daily operations. 2. Model the Behaviour You Expect: * Lead by Example: Demonstrate the behaviour you want to see in others. Your actions should reflect the organisation’s values, from how you interact with employees to how you handle challenges. 3. Address Poor Behaviour Promptly: * Act Quickly: Confront and address inappropriate behaviour as soon as it occurs. Delays in addressing issues can lead to a culture of tolerance for misconduct. * Apply Consistent Consequences: Ensure that consequences for poor behaviour are fair, consistent, and aligned with organisational values. This reinforces that there are clear boundaries and expectations. 4. Foster a Culture of Accountability: * Encourage Self-Regulation: Promote an environment where everyone is encouraged to hold themselves and others accountable for their actions. * Provide Support: Offer resources and support for employees to understand and align with organisational values, helping them navigate challenges and uphold standards. 5. Seek and Act on Feedback: * Encourage Open Communication: Create channels for employees to provide feedback on behaviour and organisational culture without fear of reprisal. * Respond Constructively: Act on feedback to address and rectify issues. This shows that you value employee input and are committed to maintaining a positive culture. 6. Celebrate Positive Behaviour: * Recognise and Reward: Acknowledge and reward employees who exemplify the organisation’s values. Celebrating positive behaviour reinforces the desired culture and motivates others to follow suit. * Share Success Stories: Highlight examples of how upholding values has led to positive outcomes, reinforcing the connection between behaviour and organisational success. 7. Invest in Leadership Development: * Provide Training: Offer training and development opportunities for leaders at all levels to enhance their skills in managing behaviour and fostering a positive culture. 8. Promote Inclusivity and Respect: * Build a Diverse Environment: Create a culture that respects and values diversity. Inclusivity strengthens the organisational fabric and fosters a more collaborative and supportive work environment.

The Indian beauty and personal care market hit $21 billion, yet most new brands are missing what actually builds loyalty. I've watched brands launch with fancy packaging and influencer budgets, only to disappear within months. If I were starting a beauty or a skincare brand today, here's exactly how I'd build it: Step 1: Start with one hero product Not ten SKUs at launch. One product that solves a real problem. That single focus can help you build trust before expanding. Step 2: Build community before scaling Every product company today is also a media company. Host events, create content that connects, and listen to your community constantly. That emotional bond cannot be copied by competitors. Step 3: Give people a real reason to care Your brand needs a purpose beyond profit. Try to bridge traditional methods with modern science because Indian consumers wanted both. That clear mission kept us focused when things got hard. Step 4: Use minis to convert premium buyers India is the mini capital of the world. Small sizes help value-conscious customers try premium products without the risk. It's the bridge that converts them to full-size later. Step 5: Plan for omni-channel from day one Online alone won't get you past ₹100 crores. You need D2C, marketplaces, and physical retail. For hair care brands, salons matter because they train, service, and sample after sales. Minimalist followed this playbook perfectly. They built strong products, created a loyal community, and recently sold to Unilever for ₹3,000 crores in just 4 years. The beauty market is booming, but success takes patience. Most value gets created in the second or third decade. The brands that survive the frustration zone are the ones that last. Which step do you think is hardest when building a beauty brand?

How can Europe build a #digital future that embraces #innovation, competitiveness, and democratic values alike? Today's #sundAIreads is "The European Way: A Blueprint for Reclaiming Our Digital Future," a paper recently published by a long list of luminaries, including Kai Zenner, Philipp Hacker, Sebastian Hallensleben, Dr. Till Klein, Prof. Dr. Rolf Schwartmann, Björn Ommer, as well as ada's co-founders Dr. Miriam Meckel and Dr. Léa Steinacker. In the paper, the authors offer both an overarching vision and six concrete policy proposals for how the EU can reclaim its leadership in innovation and #technology. ➡️ What is currently holding Europe back? While the authors admire the EU's efforts toward ensuring that emerging technologies are governed by democratic principles, they lament that these efforts have not been streamlined and strategic enough to achieve autonomy in the digital sphere. ➡️ How can these shortcomings be addressed? The authors propose six foundational principles to address these shortcomings: 1️⃣ Principled governance: Defend democratic principles and fair competition. 2️⃣ Strategic resilience: Reduce critical dependencies on non-EU software, hardware, and infrastructure. 3️⃣ Interoperability: Embrace open standards and solutions to streamline digital services and facilitate interoperability. 4️⃣ Sustainability: Invest in eco-friendly and energy-efficient solutions. 5️⃣ Trustworthiness: Ensure digital products align with European values. 6️⃣ Decentralized economy: Protect the diversity of the digital ecosystem, paying particular heed to the needs of EU SMEs. ➡️ What concrete steps can Europe take to reclaim its digital future? The authors propose the following six priority reforms that can help pave the way toward a more digital and sustainable future: 1️⃣ Invest in a sovereign European tech stack from physical infrastructure to platforms and applications. 2️⃣ Continue expanding the digital single market, including a more unified approach to banking and finance, procurement, and competition. 3️⃣ Become a more assertive player in digital governance by investing in strategic international partnerships. 4️⃣ Reduce the regulatory burden by streamlining policymaking and assiduously adhering to principles of good governance. 5️⃣ Align its digital and sustainability agendas to reduce critical dependencies and drive economic competitiveness. 6️⃣ Increase access to critical skills and talent by facilitating high-skilled immigration, simplifying cross-border working arrangements, and promoting digital literacy. The paper conveys a sense of urgency appropriate to the challenges at hand: "The time for half-measures has passed. The world has become a tougher place. It's time for Europe to toughen up, too." But the authors also conclude on a note of optimism: "If we act with courage and purpose, the digital EU we dream of can become the digital EU we deliver." Post 1: IEEE.org AI 7000 standards AI doesn’t just need rules. It needs principles that still hold when the rules break. That’s why I’m writing this series. I still remember when ISO 27001 felt like overkill. Something for the compliance drawer, not the design room. But over time, it gave structure to risk, confidence to decision-makers, and something real for engineers to build on. Now AI is pushing us to make the same leap. Models are going live without scrutiny. Features are being stitched into systems as if they’re harmless. And if you ask, “Can you trust what this thing is doing?”, too often, you just get a shrug. Checklists won’t cut it. We need design that reflects intent. That captures values before it captures logic. That’s where IEEE steps in and its army of talented and motivated volunteers who create and influence its standards The 7000 series isn’t about ethics as decoration. These are design standards. That tackle issues in bias, transparency, privacy, trust, sustainability, and well-being. All the messy, human things that actually matter. They make you ask better questions before the code is live. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be digging into each of these: • IEEE 7000 – Embedding ethics into system design • IEEE 7001 – Transparency in autonomous systems • IEEE 7002 – Privacy in intelligent systems • IEEE 7003 – Tackling algorithmic bias • IEEE P7004 – Protecting children and students • IEEE 7005 – Transparent employer data governance • IEEE 7007 – Ontologies for ethical robotics • IEEE P7008 – Nudging vs. manipulation • IEEE 7009 – Fail-safe autonomous systems • IEEE P7009.1 – Safety interventions in autonomy • IEEE 7010 – Well-being by design • IEEE P7010.1 – ESG and AI systems • IEEE P7011 – Trustworthy news content • IEEE P7012 – Machine-readable privacy terms • IEEE 7014 – Ethical emulated empathy • IEEE P7014.1 – Empathy in general-purpose AI • IEEE P7015 – Data/AI literacy and readiness • IEEE P7016 – Metaverse governance • IEEE P7016.1 – Metadata for XR education • IEEE P7017 – Human-robot interaction • IEEE P7018 – Secure generative AI • IEEE P7019 – Earth Law and AI • IEEE P7100 – Environmental impact of AI • IEEE P8000 – Ethical property specs in AI Not theory. Practice. How these standards guide procurement, audits, development, and governance. And how they work with ISO, not against it. ISO gives you the scaffolding. IEEE gives you the soul. And if you care about building AI systems that last, you need both. Any standard with a “P” in front is still in progress, and open. You can join a working group. Help shape what comes next. (Thanks to John C. Havens, Founding Chair and architect of Ethically aligned Design and IEEE 7000 series) This isn’t about idealism. It’s about being ready, and choosing not to be surprised. Next up: IEEE 7000 - Why values don’t belong at the end of the design process. #AIethics #ResponsibleAI #IEEEstandards #TechGovernance #AIalignment

‼️ New op-ed: "Don't abandon our values: Why the EU must stay the course on AI regulation" Sebastian Hallensleben and I have followed and shaped the EU’s AI policy debate from its early stages in 2018 through to the final vote in 2024. With our latest op-ed for the IAPP, we want to push back against the recent wave of calls from self-styled AI experts who, having not contributed to the years-long legislative process, now call for the law to be scrapped or fundamentally rewritten. This is not how sound policymaking works — and it risks undermining Europe’s credibility in global tech governance. If every law is up for renegotiation as soon as it is passed, the EU sends the wrong message — to innovators, to regulators abroad, and to the public: that democratic deliberation can be overruled by lobbying pressure or short-term panic of the EU Institutions. To be clear: a limited delay to better prepare for the high-risk obligations may be justified — particularly to give the #AIOffice, national competent authorities, and companies the time to coordinate & prepare effectively. But this must not become a pretext to water down the law or indefinitely postpone its application. Political leaders now have a #responsibility to #speak #clearly and #consistently. Ambiguity only fuels toxic legal uncertainty, discouraging EU firms from investing in compliance and weakening Europe’s position as a global standard-setter in AI governance. The EU AI Act is far from perfect but also far from being final. With delegated acts, harmonised standards, and the mix of European and national enforcement authorities, much remains to be shaped. Abandoning it now would squander years of democratic effort and derail the EU’s ambition to steer AI in line with its values and strategic interests. Now is the time to focus on smart implementation — not to reverse course. #AIAct #leadership #EuropeanWay #TechSovereignity https://lnkd.in/etEUwRt6

Meetings aren’t for updates - they’re where your culture is being built… or broken. In distributed, remote, & hybrid teams, meetings are key moments where team members experience culture together. That makes every meeting a high-stakes opportunity. Yet most teams stay in default mode - using meetings for project updates instead of connection, ideation, debate, and culture-building. Fixing meeting overload isn’t just about having fewer Zooms. It’s about rewiring your communication norms: ✔️ Do we know when to communicate synchronously vs. asynchronously? ✔️ Are we using async tools that give transparency without constant live check-ins? ✔️ Have we aligned on our team values and expected behaviors? 💡 3 ways to reduce meetings and make the remaining ones count: 1️⃣ Co-create a Team Working Agreement. Before you can reinforce values, your team needs to define them. We’ve spent hundreds of hours helping teams do this - and have seen measurable gains in team effectiveness. Key components: ✔️ Shared team goals ✔️ Defining team member roles ✔️ Agreed-upon behaviors ✔️ Communication norms (sync vs. async) 2️⃣ Begin meetings with a connection moment. Relationships fuel trust and collaboration. Kick things off with a check-in like: “What gave you energy this week?” Or tailor it to the topic. In a recent meeting on decision-making norms, we asked: “Speed or certainty - which do you value more when making decisions, and why?” 3️⃣ Make team values part of the agenda. Create a ritual to recognize teammates for living into the team behaviors. Ask the question: “Where did we see our values or team agreements show up this week?” And check in on where could the team have done better. Culture doesn’t happen by accident - especially when your teams are spread across time zones, WFH setups, and multiple office sites. Your meetings can become a powerful tool to build culture with intention. Excerpt from the Work 20XX podcast with Jeff Frick

Europe's Digital Crossroads 🇺🇸🇨🇳🔀🇪🇺 While Europe stands as an economic powerhouse, our digital economy remains a step behind - creating vulnerabilities that threaten our core values and independence. This digital dependence has real-world consequences. We've witnessed foreign entities manipulating European elections through social media platforms. The evidence is clear of foreign actors trying to tip the scale. From the 2016 EU-Ukraine Association Treaty referendum in the Netherlands to Brexit and the recent Romanian presidential elections. For years, Europe placed its trust in American handling of our data. That confidence is eroding. JD Vance has plainly revealed where certain U.S. political factions stand, while Elon Musk, at Twitter/X's helm, is even less discrete and openly tries to interfere with our democratic conversations. Simultaneously, the White House contemplates banning TikTok, citing national security concerns related to Chinese control over American data. Trump however makes a very good point. We can, and should, make the same case for our European data. The situation intensifies today as Trump prepares to announce tariffs on European goods. True, we maintain a trade surplus in physical goods, but we face a deficit in digital services. We can use that deficit as a counterbalance to Trump's protectionism. The pattern becomes evident. We're approaching a trade conflict while both China and the United States assert influence over Europe's digital landscape through data collection, manipulation, and oversight. That's why the EU must act decisively by: - Reclaiming control of our data (and build a EU based infrastructure). - Safeguarding our electoral processes (by controlling our own social networks). - Developing indigenous technologies grounded in European principles and privacy protection. Europe isn’t powerless. We have real leverage. An affluent, well-educated population and regulatory leadership that already shapes global norms. This would make European SaaS a trusted alternative to US and Chinese offerings. The path forward presents challenges, but this pivotal moment could ignite a digital renaissance that returns Europe to the driver's seat of its own destiny. By marrying our democratic traditions with technological ambition, we can build a digital ecosystem where privacy isn't sacrificed for progress, where innovation serves citizens rather than surveilling them, and where European values shape the next chapter of the global internet. And the ecosystem is already moving. Just look at the sectors where Europe is about to mint its next wave of unicorns 👇 #MEGA
