Over the past 3 years, I've published 19 peer-reviewed papers (with 5 more in the pipeline). People assume that means I work around the clock. The truth is less impressive, and far more sustainable to anyone earlier in their career: I stopped trying to do it alone. Those 19 papers resulted from collaborations with my research partners across several countries, including Pakistan, Poland, Malaysia, Morocco, and the UK. That's the part most of us miss early on. Output doesn't come from a hundred one-off connections or from working later into the night. It comes from a handful of deep partnerships where trust, shared methods, and momentum carry over from one project to the next. Build the relationship once. Publish from it for a decade. Looking for collaborators as a researcher? Here are some principles and steps to follow. Principles: 1⃣ Ditch the "Don't talk to strangers" mentality 2⃣ Build your network before you need it – it's a long game 3⃣ Be proactive - schedule it into your calendar 4⃣ Give, give, give 🔸Step 1: Start with your Power Base Start by re-engaging with your connections from college, med school, or your residency/fellowship program. Reconnect with a simple text or email. Ask how they're doing and share your updates. Start with the oldest contacts and work your way up. 🔸Step 2: Social Media/Email 🌐 Academics are often on Twitter & LinkedIn. Follow people in your field, engage with their posts - like, comment, reshare. Remember, interacting actively makes you visible and initiates discussions. Don't just follow - engage! 🔸Step 3: Research 🕵️ Before reaching out, conduct a bit of research. Visit their Google Scholar page or PubMed. Understand their research interests and recent publications. Highlight any commonalities between their work and yours. It demonstrates that you're resourceful, detail-oriented, and have a genuine interest in their work. 🔸Step 4: The Ask 🗣️ Have good manners. Remember, experts don't owe you anything. If they don't respond, they're likely just busy. Don't follow up with "???", that's just rude. When asking: 1️⃣ Establish commonality 2️⃣ Ask for one specific thing. 3️⃣ Don't ask questions that a Google search can answer. 4️⃣ Give them an out to say 'No'. 5️⃣ Thank them regardless of 'yes' or 'no'. Don't block them or talk bad about them. 6️⃣ Give public credit 🔸Step 5: Collaborative Partnership 🤝 After successfully initiating a collaboration, make sure to add value. Always submit your work on time, take initiative, and demonstrate commitment. Don't wait around for instructions Or rely on: “tell me what to do” - that is like giving them homework Instead, say: "I can do X, Y, Z. I can help with that." This shows your eagerness to contribute and eases the burden on the collaborator. Always remember to give credit and appreciate their support in public forums.

Here's the 6-step process of what I put into your custom-tailored networking roadmap 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭 I get a full picture of your skills based on 1:1 time we spend together. I test out Boolean searches based on your skills, and come up with targeted terms that produce a manageable list of hits. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮 You receive the search terms, execute them, and provide me with a list of the results. The raw data includes, goodness of fit, company, search parameter, and job title 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯 I analyze the data you provided, produce a weighted score based on goodness of fit, your interest level, and the role seniority compared to your level of experience. I then narrow down to a list of companies that have the highest number of jobs that match you. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰 I further narrow the companies down based on a risk score that I come up with that factors their stock performance (if publicly traded), their layoff history, and their funding level to maximize career stability at for the companies you target. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟱 I produce a half page summary with a focused roadmap of which companies to network with, what titles the employees should have based on your qualifications, and what their seniority level should be. I also add search terms from your results that produced the most focused compatible list of jobs. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟲 We work together using applied examples to start building your network at your targeted companies. We then take jobs at those companies and target your resume to hit their specific pain points. 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 One panelist: "When someone reaches out and it's very obvious they've read my work or looked at my website and custom-tailored a message TO ME specifically - I always reply. 99% of messages I get are generic. If I can tell you sent the same message to 100 people, I won't respond." In the AI era, this matters more than ever. Everyone can send "personalized" emails at scale now. Manual cold emails get lost in the noise. 𝟐. 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝟓𝟎 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐈𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 Conferences aren't just keynotes - they're networking goldmines. Vendor booths, poster sessions, coffee breaks. This is where real connections happen. Can't afford registration? Offer to volunteer. Many organizers give free entry in exchange for helping at the registration desk. Academic Networking: I often receive messages from aspiring researchers looking to collaborate, co-author papers, or even seeking supervision for a PhD or postdoc. I completely understand this enthusiasm—I was once in the same position, reaching out to senior scholars in a similar way. However, over time, I realized that this approach doesn’t always work as expected, and I want to share a few insights that might help others navigate academic networking more effectively. First, most researchers are busy with their own projects, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. A long research proposal or a detailed funding request in the first message may not receive the attention it deserves. Even if they do read the proposal, there’s no guarantee that it fits within their specific research focus or current priorities. Academic collaborations are often driven by a shared research agenda. Moreover, not all professors have the capacity to directly hire PhD or postdoc candidates. In many countries, including Norway, these positions are often tied to specific funding sources and competitive application processes, rather than individual faculty decisions. Through my own experience, I’ve learned that a more strategic approach can significantly improve the chances of building meaningful academic connections. Instead of sending a generic request, it’s helpful to first take time to explore their recent publications, projects, and research interests. This ensures that your message is relevant and shows genuine interest in their work. Rather than sending a full proposal in your first message, it’s better to introduce yourself briefly, mention a specific aspect of their work that resonates with your research interests, and politely inquire about potential collaboration opportunities. It’s also helpful to check university websites, department pages, or project announcements to see if there are any open positions or specific calls for PhD or postdoc candidates tied to funded research projects. Sometimes these opportunities are already publicly listed, which can save time for both you and the potential collaborator. Additionally, if direct supervision or collaboration isn’t possible, consider asking for guidance, feedback, or recommendations for relevant opportunities in the field. Ever heard how investing early leads to greater returns thanks to compound interest? The same principle applies to networking during your PhD. The earlier you start building connections—attending events, reaching out to peers, commenting on others' work—the more these small investments grow over time. In fact, research supports this: Seibert et al. (2001) found that people with rich, early networks gain more access to information, visibility, and sponsorship—leading to greater career success. Bozeman & Corley (2004) showed that early collaborations are linked to higher research productivity and more future opportunities. And let’s not forget the Matthew Effect (Merton, 1968): in science, once you're visible and connected, more opportunities come your way. By year 4 or 5, you’ll have a network that opens doors to collaborations, job opportunities, and invitations… while others are just getting started. So, how can early career researchers start “investing” in their network? Here are 3 small, smart steps that have worked for me and many others: Reach out to speakers after seminars or conferences. A simple “Thanks, I liked your point on X” goes a long way. Comment on LinkedIn posts by researchers in your field. Thoughtful comments = conversation starters. Ask questions. In webinars, on social media, or via email. People love to help when you’re genuinely curious. Networking isn’t about being strategic or transactional—it’s about staying curious, showing up (according to Woody Allen, showing up is 80% of success), and staying in touch. One of the most important design features of the ANRF-PAIR initiative is not just capacity building — it is structured collaboration. The Hub-and-Spoke model enables institutions to move beyond isolated efforts and engage with established research ecosystems in a more sustained way. Through this, partner institutions are not only accessing expertise from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), but also beginning to build collaborative pathways that strengthen their own research environments. During a recent ANRF PAIR-sponsored workshop at National Institute of Technology Nagaland, I spoke on “Grants Management and Strategies.” One theme that consistently emerged was this: Collaboration is not only a scientific decision. It is also a management decision. Strong collaborations require: • Clarity in roles and responsibilities • Alignment with funding priorities • Coordinated proposal development • Shared compliance and reporting systems • Long-term planning beyond a single grant These are all elements of grants management, not just grant writing. ANRF PAIR’s objective — strengthening research capacity across institutions — is therefore closely linked to how well institutions can translate collaboration into structured research programs. In academia, whom you know well matters a lot! A hard truth that I learned from my seniors is that you need to build connections that last beyond projects and deadlines. This is what people call "Networking". To put it simply, networking is not about knowing people. It is about maintaining and nurturing relationships with those who support you as well as challenge you. These are the people who will be helpful when you are searching for post-doc, academic positions, want to give a talk, or organize a seminar, in short, at every step of your academic journey. So, how do you build your network? Here are some tips and tricks that I have picked up from my seniors who have walked on these roads years before me. 1. Quality > Quantity The conference is one place where you will find many like-minded people. So rather than trying to talk with everyone, aim to build meaningful and deeper relationships with just a few. Start a conversation around your common research interests or share some of the challenges that you have been facing. Remember: Genuine connections often start from a shared curiosity. 2. Follow up thoughtfully After you have met someone, follow up with them. You can share some articles or maybe share an update about the topic you discussed earlier. This will keep your connection alive. Building a meaningful relationship takes time and effort. Once established, it will give you a mentor and a future collaborator. Networking follows the principle of sharing is caring. 3. Connect with interdisciplinary people My seniors encouraged me to connect with people across different disciplines. This gives new ideas and offers different perspectives. You never know that discussing with a biophysicist can give your quantum optics work an unexpected direction. 4. Do online networking Platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter are very important for academic networking. You can leave a thoughtful comment, engage with others' research work, or anything insightful that adds value. This will help you build connections online. To sum up, one big lesson about networking that I learned from my seniors is "Focus on building relations and not contacts." Building a high-level network is the best way to create 'career insurance' - Here are 7 ways you can network BEFORE you need a job And yes - I've done each of these myself. 1 - Connect a high-level leader to someone looking for podcast guests. Become a connector. Find podcast hosts that would be interested in leaders at your firm. 2 - Plan a 'Career Growth' session at work; invite select managers and leaders as guest speakers. Speaking opportunities will appeal to some leaders; give them an opportunity they can't pass up. 3 - Publish a collaborative LinkedIn article - reach out for quotes and comments from leaders or managers in the space. Reach out to 5–6 leaders and ask for 1 quote on an industry trend. Compile their insights into an article or post; tag them, and amplify their visibility. 4 - Send them an "I built this based on..." message Find a keynote or panel where a leader shared a framework or insight. Build a visual, write an article, or make a slide based on the idea; send it to them. 5 - Send a Video, but Make it About Them Instead of pitching or requesting, record a short video sharing a story of how their work impacted you or your team. Keep it under 60 seconds. 6 - Create a 'Modern Mentorship' Series Turn your learning journey into content. Interview 10 high-level leaders via email or LinkedIn DMs and ask 2-3 thoughtful questions. Share each response as a short post. 7 - Send Periodic 'Gratitude Messages' A simple message thanking them for their inspiration - or something valuable they taught you.
