    My first 5 grant applications were rejected. Every single one. Here's how I went from £10k to £10m in research grant funding: I remember opening that fifth rejection email and thinking maybe my research just wasn't good enough. Maybe I wasn't cut out for this. Then a panel reviewer told me something that changed everything. She said: "I stopped reading on page 2." Not because the science was weak. Because the way I presented it was. I had buried the real-world impact on page 3. I led with the literature gap instead of the problem. My methodology was sound but my narrative was invisible. I was writing for academics. I should have been writing for funders. So I rebuilt my entire proposal structure around three principles. I now call it the 3P Proposal Structure. P1: Problem Framing. Lead with the real-world problem and its cost. Not the gap in the literature. Funders don't fund gaps. They fund solutions. "This problem costs the NHS £2.3 billion annually" hits harder than "this area remains under-explored." P2: Path Innovation. Show what you will do differently. Not just what you will study. Every applicant studies something. Very few explain why their approach is the one that will actually work. P3: Projected Impact. Connect your outcomes to the stakeholders who fund research. If the funder can see themselves in your story, you win. Same research question. Completely different proposal structure. The next application secured half a million pounds. Then a million. Then over the course of my career, more than £10 million in research funding. Grant writing is storytelling. Your research is the plot. The funder needs to see themselves in the story.     Health equity researchers applying for NIH grants: Are you worried that naming racial and ethnic disparities could make your application harder to fund, especially when the intervention is culturally tailored? Here's what I'm doing in my proposals. There is no single answer across ICs, mechanisms, NOFOs, or review contexts, and public-facing materials on IC websites have changed little. Public-facing guidance often suggests that little has changed. At the same time, what we are seeing based on requests for revisions and proposals with JITs points to a more nuanced reality. In this climate, I would be cautious about writing an application as if it is only for one racial or ethnic group unless the funding opportunity clearly supports that. That doesn't mean removing your target population. It means being clear about the role race or ethnicity is playing in the proposal. Is it defining the population of interest? Is it showing where burden is concentrated? Is it documenting a gap in testing, screening, uptake, care, treatment, access, or outcomes? Is it tied to a specific setting, access point, decision point, barrier, or mechanism? These are different uses, and they should not all be written the same way. In strong applications right now, the disparity is shown through the care process or outcome being studied rather than as a standalone statement. If race or ethnicity is central to your data, making the proposal vague will usually make the project harder to understand and harder to evaluate. Make the problem concrete. What condition are you studying? What outcome is not where it should be? Where in the care process does the gap appear? Who will be recruited and how? What specifically is not happening that should be? What will your study test, change, compare, adapt, implement, or improve? For culturally tailored interventions, be specific about the tailoring: what is being tailored, for whom, based on what evidence, how it applies across the recruited population, and how it connects to the outcome. On review panels, the strongest applications aren't hiding racial and ethnic disparities behind general language. They're showing a specific problem that reviewers and program staff can evaluate, such as a condition, a care process, an access point, a treatment decision, an uptake gap, an implementation barrier, or a measurable outcome. Don't try to hide the disparity. Show the exact problem your study is designed to solve. Save this if you are planning an NIH submission and send it to someone trying to write about racial or ethnic disparities or culturally tailored interventions right now.     🚀 Grantwriting post 🚀 Imagine your reviewer or panel/committee member. It's 9 PM, the night before the review meeting. They've got a toddler on their lap, a glass of wine in one hand, and your proposal in the other. They've been interrupted 5 times while reading and they need to get through 9 more proposals before going to sleep. Can they understand what you want to do? No? Make. It. Simpler. Over the past few months I've been reviewing grants for Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia, and the Lung Cancer Research Foundation. Submitting a grant takes an enormous amount of effort, but so many fail simply because **the reviewers can't understand what you want to do.** A few suggestions applicable to almost any grant ➡️ 1️⃣ Include a sentence saying, "The goal of this project is ________." Ideally make it the first sentence of your abstract and your proposal, but at minimum put it in the first paragraph. If you can't state your goal in one sentence, refine it until you can. 2️⃣ Remove all acronyms. If it's less recognizable than "HIV" or "DNA," then spell it out every time. Acronyms can hopelessly muddle an otherwise strong proposal. 3️⃣ Start with *simplicity* then add *complexity.* First, write a half-length version of your proposal in an extremely simple way that an educated layperson could understand, and test it on a few people. When that's done, use what you wrote as header sentences/paragraphs, and add all the technical details below them. Now, each reviewer can easily skim past the parts outside their field, while still understanding the big picture. 4️⃣ List the central elements of your proposal, then REPEAT THEM. This is important for methods, e.g. - humans or mice? study design? case and control definition? recruitment strategy? sample size? statistical approach? These key facts (without details) can be repeated in the abstract, end of background, methods (here, include the details), and assessment of threats/weaknesses. If you repeat them with perfect consistency, your reviewer will understand what you want to do, and feel reassured that you have a clear plan. Happy grantwriting ✍ 😊

On your ability to achieve your goals. When you operate with a major grants mindset, you segment your most promising foundation investors and prepare to speak to them as a category. If this approach sounds familiar, you’re likely thinking about the way your individual giving colleagues approach their top donors. Treat your most promising foundations as the investors they are, and you prepare differently: FROM: "Here's what we want to do." TO: "Here's how we're positioned to achieve long-term impact." FROM: "This program needs funding." TO: "This investment strengthens our organization's capacity to serve our mission." FROM: "We hope you'll consider supporting us." TO: "We're inviting you to invest in creating lasting change." This isn't semantics. It's a repositioning that speaks directly to funders’ concerns about risk, sustainability, and return on investment. And it holds, even when the ask is project-based.

    How This Space Tech Startup Secured $5.5M (Without Giving Up Equity). Last year, I invested in Raven Space Systems. They developed a novel way to 3D print aerospace hardware: • Faster • Cheaper • More efficiently Before pursuing VC money, they secured $5.5M through grants from NASA, Air Force, and The National Science Foundation. This was pure capital for R&D to: • Validate their technology • Access specialized facilities • Build government & commercial credibility Incredible benefits, yet not without challenges. Applications are competitive, time-consuming, and often come with restrictions on fund usage. 6 steps for capital-intensive startups to access non-dilutive funding: 1) Find the Right Grant Programs → Focus on SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) → STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) programs. → These offer billions annually in non-dilutive funding for early-stage R&D. Key Agencies: NASA, NSF, DoD, (AFWERX), USDA, and others. 2) Prove Your Tech Solves a Big Problem → Funders want mission-critical solutions over "cool" innovations. → Eg: NASA funds projects that improve performance in space exploration. → Use data or case studies to demonstrate the urgency of the problem → And the effectiveness of your solution. 3) Develop a Clear Proposal → Specific R&D milestones → Measurable outcomes → Commercialization plans Align your proposal with the funder's mission and values and highlight how your project advances their goals. 4) Leverage Strategic Partnerships Strengthen by collaborating with universities, labs, or prime contractors. E.g: Raven partnered with the University of Oklahoma for material testing and technical validation. Partnerships mean specialized equipment and critical expertise. 5) Engage with Grant Officers → Reach out to program managers before applying → For insights on aligning your application with agency priorities → Clarify any ambiguities and tailor your proposal accordingly 6) Iterate And Improve → Treat rejections as opportunities to learn → Many startups win grants on attempt 2 or 3 → Refining on feedback can significantly improve success rates After validating their tech with grants, Raven then raised VC to: • Scale manufacturing • Build sales teams • Enter new markets Validate with grants. Scale with VC.     Gearing up to secure funding for your research project? OR Applying for your PhD and need a Proposal? Crafting a compelling research proposal is your ticket to making a strong impression. Here's my detailed guide to help you put your best foot forward: 1. Start with a Strong Introduction: Your introduction is your chance to grab attention. Clearly state the problem your research aims to solve and why it matters. Think of it as your elevator pitch – concise, engaging, and to the point. 2. Define Your Objectives: Outline your research goals and objectives. What do you hope to achieve? Make sure they’re SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). This helps funders understand the impact of your work. 3. Conduct a Literature Review: Show you’ve done your homework. Summarize the current state of research in your field and highlight gaps your project will fill. This demonstrates your knowledge and the necessity of your research. 4. Describe Your Methodology: Detail your research design and methods. Explain how you’ll collect and analyze data, and why you’ve chosen these methods. Be clear and thorough – funders need to see you have a solid plan. 5. Highlight Your Team : Introduce your research team and their expertise. Showcase previous work and successes to build credibility. Funders invest in people as much as they do in ideas. 6. Present a Realistic Budget: Break down your budget, explaining how funds will be allocated. Be transparent and realistic. Justify your expenses by linking them to your research activities and goals. 7. Outline the Impact: Discuss the potential impact of your research. Who will benefit and how? Highlight the broader implications and the value it will bring to the field, community, or society. 8. Include a Timeline: Provide a detailed timeline for your project. This shows you’ve planned your research carefully and can manage time effectively. Include key milestones and deliverables. 9. Proofread and Peer Review: Before submission, proofread your proposal meticulously. Consider having colleagues review it for clarity and coherence. Fresh eyes can catch errors you might miss. 10. Tailor to the Funder: Finally, customize your proposal to align with the specific interests and guidelines of the funding body. Show you’ve done your research on them too, and explain why your project is a perfect fit. Remember, a well-crafted proposal is not just about presenting your research.     🎓 How to Structure a Strong PhD Research Proposal Many asked me about crafting research proposals after my last post. This post provides a detailed answer, covering structure and best practices. From my experience, here's what works👇 1️⃣ TITLE: Start with a precise, informative title that captures your focus. An effective title should include: * Research area * Methodology used * Key texts/authors Example: "Acts of Memory in Postcolonial Literature: A Textual Analysis of Mamang Dai’s 'River Poems'" This title conveys: 1. Area – "Acts of memory" 2. Approach – "Postcolonial textual analysis" 3. Focus – "Mamang Dai’s poems" 4. Text – "River Poems" 2️⃣ INTRODUCTION: Set the context of your research. Include brief background, key issues, research gaps, and global/national relevance. Remember: *you don’t need an abstract* for a research proposal — that’s a separate summary document. 3️⃣ RESEARCH QUESTIONS & OBJECTIVES: This is where you list your research questions (typically 3–5) and explain your research aims and objectives: what you plan to do during your research and how you plan to achieve it. 4️⃣ LITERATURE REVIEW: This is where you demonstrate your academic awareness. Summarize the key works that relate to your topic. Most importantly — identify the "gap" your study will fill. Think of this as your way of saying: “Here’s what scholars have done so far — and here’s where my research fits in.” Avoid turning it into a long list of summaries; instead, show how the literature builds toward your research question(s). 5️⃣ RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Explain HOW you plan to conduct your research. State your approach and justify why it suits your project. Include: * Research design and methods * Primary and secondary sources * Theoretical framework(s) * Ethical considerations This section should make your reader think: “Yes, this is doable.” 6️⃣ JUSTIFICATION & RELEVANCE: Highlight your research’s academic and social impact. What and how does it contribute to broader debates and communities, etc. You may also add your long-term goals, such as pursuing academia, or publishing your findings. It should convince the readers that your research matters! 7️⃣ TIMELINE: Outline a realistic plan of action across 3–4 years. This shows your proposal is structured and achievable. 8️⃣ BIBLIOGRAPHY: End with a concise but relevant list of key works. Use a consistent referencing style (APA, MLA, or Harvard). Note: * Some universities ask for "Works Cited" (only what’s mentioned) * Others ask for a "Bibliography" (a broader reading list) 💡 FINAL ADVICE: ✔️ Keep your research specific enough to be researchable but broad enough for exploration ✔️ A clear, well-structured proposal isn't about complexity — it's about clarity. ✔️ Word limit: 1500-2000 words.     Looking for Grant Funding❓ I spent years at a Foundation that provided funding to dozens of nonprofit organizations. I managed their grant programs, which meant that I read every application and sat in all of the grant-making committee meetings. I saw the decision-making process up close and personal. So I can report that funders are committed to supporting impactful programs that fall within their mission, but …  grant committee members (most of whom are volunteers) may not always be familiar with your organization, projects, client needs, or impact on the community. The best advice I can give: 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲! 📢 To ensure your proposal stands out, here are a few tips: ➡️𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲: Present your mission and goals in a straightforward manner. Avoid jargon and complex language.  ➡️𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Share real-life examples and success stories that highlight the impact of your work. ➡️𝐁𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞: Keep your proposal succinct and to the point. Highlight the most critical information. ➡️𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬: Clearly outline the expected outcomes and how they align with the funder’s priorities. ➡️𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐢𝐝𝐬: Use charts, graphs, and images to illustrate your points and make your proposal visually engaging. 💠By simplifying your presentation, you make it easier for grantors to understand and support your vision.
