    What an ‘explosive diarrhea’ parasite can tell us about the economics of a food safety outbreak The current cyclosporiasis outbreak, now with a growing number of confirmed or suspected cases across the U.S., is a live case study in how these events move markets before a source is even confirmed. In the short run, the main channel is usually demand. When people hear ‘fresh produce’ tied to an outbreak, some avoid entire categories they associate with past events, like bagged salads, leafy greens, herbs, and berries, even when those items were never implicated. Since these products are perishable, even a small, temporary drop in demand can move prices quickly. On the grocery side, that can show up as localized discounting. The restaurant side offered a vivid example this week. Investigators linked a cluster of cases to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell locations in five states, though it’s worth stressing this is one identified cluster, not necessarily the source of every case. Still, it highlights something structural. When a single supplier handles a high-volume item across many locations, one contamination event can scale into a national problem quickly. Chains that diversify sourcing across suppliers and regions tend to contain problems more locally, but at higher cost. There is a trade-off. Even so, the shock can ripple beyond the firms directly implicated. Sweetgreen, for example, saw a sharp, short-lived drop in its stock price despite not using iceberg lettuce, before rebounding after clarifying its supply chain. These effects are usually localized and product-specific, and often short-lived once a source is identified or headlines fade.     Over the last few years, I’ve been following the poultry and agri-supply chain space closely both as an investor and as someone who works with founders. It’s genuinely one of the hardest categories to operate in: low margins, fragmented supply, high compliance, disease risk, and very low consumer awareness. Trust here is built slowly, through systems, honesty and consistency. Which is why the recent controversy around eggs and “unsafe practices” hit so hard. A single viral clip can create doubt overnight even when the full context isn’t always visible. As a consumer, I’ll admit I was confused at first too. Instead of reacting, I tried to understand. I asked questions, looked at processes, and tried to see how Eggoz actually works with farmers, testing, storage and cold-chain. Once I looked at the facts, the noise felt a lot less scary. Yes, brands should always be held accountable. That’s non-negotiable. But we also need to recognise how incredibly tough it is to build clean, transparent food brands in India and how quickly fear can undo years of effort. Brands like Eggoz aren’t just selling eggs. They’re building trust, farmer livelihoods and better systems, one step at a time. That’s the story worth paying attention to In the age of virality, it’s easy for one clip or headline to overpower months (sometimes years) of real work. Brands take years to build trust with consumers, regulators, and partners yet one false or poorly contextualised viral video can momentarily tarnish that hard-earned reputation. For context, here’s what actually happened in the recent news cycle about an eggs’ consumer brand: An independent test detected a trace-level residue (~0.73 ppb) of a banned antibiotic metabolite in one batch, which technically passed Indian regulatory limits, but was presented as a failure under a zero-tolerance interpretation despite the regulator itself later clarifying that eggs remain safe for consumption and that such isolated findings cannot be used to label a brand or the entire industry as unsafe. As founders, we owe it to consumers to separate signal from noise. As founders, we’ve all seen how one sensational claim, when stripped of context, can create disproportionate fear, sometimes holding brands hostage temporarily, without actually serving consumer interest. I’d urge anyone forming an opinion to read FSSAI’s statements and advisories directly, and to weigh one viral claim against multiple verified reports and regulatory findings. Consumers deserve truth, not panic. And founders deserve to be judged on facts, not fear.

Before your quality team even knows there's a problem, thousands of people may have already seen it. Ten years ago, an unhappy customer called your helpline. Today, they open Instagram before they finish chewing. The complaint window has collapsed from 72 hours to 7 minutes. Yet many food brands still handle complaints as though it's 2014. That's the gap. Across audits in food manufacturing facilities and cloud kitchens, I've noticed a recurring pattern. Companies invest heavily in food safety systems, GMP, hygiene, and FSSAI compliance. But customer complaints often sit with customer support or social media, disconnected from the quality team. By the time QA gets involved, the conversation is already public. Here's what has changed: 1. Every complaint is now evidence. A contamination complaint is no longer just a refund request. It's a video showing the product, packaging, batch details, and timestamps before the investigation has even started. 2. Speed matters. Customers don't expect all the answers immediately. They expect acknowledgement. Silence creates speculation. 3. Your response is being audited. Most consumers understand that isolated incidents can happen. What they judge is how quickly, transparently, and responsibly the brand responds. 4. Your social media team is now part of your food safety system. The first person replying online shouldn't be guessing. They need direct access to QA, traceability, and clear response protocols. Complaint handling can no longer sit outside your food safety system. It needs to be integrated with quality, traceability, and crisis communication. Because today's complaint isn't just customer service. It's live-broadcast quality assurance. The brands that understand this won't just handle crises better.
