    Millions are spent on optimising the product. But not to optimise the packaging, this is all about to change. Packaging has been just a marketing expense. But in August 2026, the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) officially turns it into a legal liability. The EU is executing the most sweeping overhaul of packaging law in 30 years. ↳ Void Rule: Under the new rules, packaging cannot have more than 50% empty space. The times of shipping a USB cable in a shoebox-sized carton is over. ↳ Recyclability Baseline: By 2030, all packaging on the EU market must be recyclable in an economically viable way. If a package falls below the 70% recyclability threshold, it is banned from the shelves entirely. ↳ Reuse Mandate: The EU is attacking the B2B supply chain. By 2030, 40% of transport, industrial, and e-commerce packaging must be reusable (rising to 70% by 2040). ↳ Content Quota: You are going to be forced to buy back your own trash. By 2030, there is a 30% mandatory recycled content floor for all plastic packaging (scaling to 65% by 2040). Packaging waste in the EU grew 20% over the last decade. Regulators are now fighting back and regulating the design phase. When the 30% recycled plastic mandate kicks in for all packaging, the demand for food-grade recycled plastic will skyrocket. Are brands prepared for recycled plastic to become significantly more expensive than virgin plastic?

    It's time to peel away from single-use plastic. Did you know that a staggering 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined during its initial design phase? It's a powerful reminder of the critical role designers play in crafting a more sustainable world. Elena Amato, a visionary designer from Guatemala, took this responsibility to heart with her ground-breaking innovation—bacterial cellulose sheets, a sustainable alternative to conventional single-use plastic packaging dominating the personal care industry. What sets these sheets apart is their ability to seamlessly blend the best qualities of both paper and plastic, all without the need for glues or adhesives. Her journey into sustainable design began in 2018 as part of a graduation project where she aimed to create a more sustainable packaging system for locally produced, handmade personal care products crafted from natural ingredients. During thisresearch, she stumbled upon bacterial cellulose, which was gaining recognition in the fashion world as an experimental alternative to leather. From the moment she began working with this material, she was captivated by its potential and after numerous experiments achieved a remarkable breakthrough—a natural, compostable, and colourful material perfect for packaging. The material has since evolved from a paper-like material made purely from cellulose and natural pigments to biocomposites incorporating food waste like orange peels, eggshells, and coffee grounds. Her production process involves blending water, bacteria, and yeast culture sourced from residual scoby (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). She pioneered the growth of cellulose using food waste as nutrients to nourish the bacteria, resulting in a diverse range of materials, each with its unique characteristics—some flexible, translucent, brittle, smooth, and even transparent. Inspired by nature's packaging systems found in fruits, Elena's ingenious material for soap packaging incorporates three purpose-driven layers, each serving specific functions, from protecting the product to acting as a canvas for branding—a harmonious blend of form and function. In line with the principles of a circular economy, after consumers have enjoyed the product, the packaging can be repurposed into bar soaps, mirroring the efficient utilisation seen in the consumption of fruits. Pioneering work which highlights the transformative potential of sustainable design. This "unpack less, peel more" approach not only encourages sustainable and responsible consumer engagement but challenges established norms and pushes boundaries.     Eliminating plastic waste in food packaging at a fraction of production cost? The food industry is a significant contributor to plastic waste, with packaging accounting for approximately 40.5% of all plastic produced in Europe. In the UK alone, supermarkets generate around 29.8 billion pieces of avoidable plastic waste annually, equating to over 1,000 pieces per household. This excessive plastic use not only leads to environmental pollution but also poses health risks, as microplastics have been found in various food products, potentially causing inflammation and other health issues. Transitioning to seaweed-based packaging offers several cost-saving benefits for the food industry: →Reduced Raw Material Costs: Seaweed is renewable and doesn’t need land, fertilisers, or fresh water, cutting production expenses. Example: Seaweed farming can yield up to 10 tons of dry mass per hectare annually. →Lower Waste Management Expenses: Biodegradable and compostable, seaweed packaging reduces disposal costs. Example: The UK spends around £700 million annually on plastic waste disposal. →Decreased Environmental Compliance Costs: Eco-friendly packaging helps meet regulations, avoiding fines.     ♻️ 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹. For years we’ve told brands to 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. Now, it’s about to cost them if they don’t. 💰 From now, UK producers will start paying 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗘𝗣𝗥 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘀 (higher for “red” non-recyclable formats, lower for “green” ones). In France, Citeo’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼-𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 already hits PVC and carbon-black plastics with up to a 𝟭𝟬% 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆, while rewarding recycled content and reuse. And the 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝘅 (£223.69 / tonne for packs with <30% recycled content) has pushed recycled-resin demand up 𝟳% 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. Design choices are starting to carry real costs. Circular design is finally being rewarded. ⚙️ But let’s be honest, design rules only work if the system can keep up. Around ~𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗞 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝘀 still don’t collect films weekly. FlexCollect trials show 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝟰𝟬% 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟴𝟱%, though capture rates remain lower as households adapt and infrastructure scales. Without matching collection and processing capacity, design progress risks outpacing the system. 🔍 And yet, small design tweaks make huge differences: 🟢 Switching to mono-PE film can boost recyclate yield by ~𝟮𝟱% ⚫ Removing carbon-black makes plastics visible to NIR sorters >𝟵𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 🔵 Ditching full-body shrink sleeves can reduce PET sorting errors 𝗯𝘆 𝟲𝟬% Circular design isn’t about revolution — it’s about engineering out the barriers one label, pigment and adhesive at a time. 🌍 Ultimately, circular design is 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻. Nearly 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 comes from making virgin materials. Get design right at the start and you cut emissions before recycling even begins. Across Europe, better packaging design could cut 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗛𝗚 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 (𝟮𝟱–𝟯𝟬%) 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬. 💬 The question is no longer 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 we design for circularity, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰?     To create the system-wide change needed to address some of the more complex sustainability challenges facing our planet, you need to have a bold vision and turn it into bold action. In Romania, we’ve seen what that looks like through an incredible collaboration among business, governments and communities to create the largest circular economy project in the country – and it’s working. In 2023, PepsiCo was among the companies who initiated and invested in the creation of a fully integrated Deposit Return System (DRS) for beverage packaging in Romania. Working across industries and with local government in an effort to increase collection and recycling rates, the DRS system is now a year old, and the impact is evident. According to the system administrator RetuRO SGR, more than 3 billion packages were collected, and more than 200,000 metric tons of materials were sent to recyclers in the one year since the DRS was created. New habits are also being formed, with six out of 10 Romanians regularly returning their packaging and monthly collection rates of beverage packaging hitting record highs of over 80% in September and October. These results are a testament to cross-sector and cross-industry collaboration to implement a system-wide solution for a system-wide challenge.     ♻️ They talk about sustainability. Germany does it. At German supermarkets, you’ll find machines where people return empty bottles — and instantly get money back. This isn’t gimmick, it’s system. 🧮 By the numbers that speak volumes: Germany’s deposit-return (Pfand) system achieves ~98% return rates on single-use drink containers. For PET bottles with deposit, the return rate hits 98.7%. Germany’s recycling of plastic packaging surged to a record 67.5% in 2022. Only 1–3% of non-reusable bottles go unreturned. While many nations are drafting long-term sustainability roadmaps, Germany is executing in real time. The Pfand system turns every empty bottle — not waste — into wallet value. So here’s what I want you to ask: What if every country made recycling profitable? What if returning waste became as automatic as buying it? Let’s stop planning for our future.     Ontario’s waste management strategy has reached a critical inflection point. While the Blue Box program was once a pioneering model of environmental stewardship, diversion rates for beverage containers have stagnated, hovering around 46% for non-alcoholic beverages. This article argues that to break this ceiling and achieve a true circular economy, Ontario must transition to a comprehensive Deposit Return System (DRS) utilizing a "Return-to-Retail" (R2R) model. The case for R2R is supported by irrefutable global data. Jurisdictions like Germany and Lithuania, which integrate container returns into the retail environment, achieve recovery rates between 89% and 98%. In contrast, depot-based and curbside models consistently underperform due to the "convenience tax" they impose on consumers. The article highlights that convenience—allowing consumers to return empties where they shop—is the single greatest predictor of system success. While the retail sector often resists DRS due to high upfront Capital Expenditures (CapEx) and logistical hurdles, this article posits that such resistance is fiscally myopic. Through rigorous economic modeling conducted by our university research team, we tested the hypothesis that DRS would be too expensive for the Ontario market. The data forced a rejection of this hypothesis. The findings demonstrate that once infrastructure costs are amortized, the system generates a positive Return on Investment (ROI) through the high market value of clean materials, the elimination of cross-contamination, and the reduction of municipal tipping fees.     Pharma companies have 2030 net zero targets. And they're shipping in packaging that won't break down until AT LEAST 2525. The chart above shows biodegradability timelines in landfill. Wool: 1–5 years. Cotton: 3 months to 5 years. Polyester: 200+ years. Spandex: 500+ years. Notice what's not on it? Polystyrene. At 500–1,000 years, it doesn't even fit. In 10+ years working across pharma cold chains across APAC, the default is almost always EPS. The gap between sustainability reports and packaging decisions comes down to three things. 1/ They measure unit price, not total cost. Polystyrene looks cheap at $X per box. It looks a lot less cheap when you add $200/ton disposal costs, 3x the warehouse space, and rising Scope 3 penalties. 2/ Switching packaging suppliers requires validation trials, updated specs, and internal sign-off. The barrier is effort, not cost. So procurement keeps buying EPS and calls alternatives "unaffordable." 3/ They publish sustainability targets without touching packaging. Solar panels. Carbon offsets. Net-zero commitments on paper. The polystyrene box that's been in the supply chain since the 1960s stays untouched. Here's what we know from our own clients: → WOOLPACK breaks down in 1–5 years with zero toxic residue → 41% lower carbon footprint than EPS from day one → Zero temperature breach complaints across 8 years The 2030 target is 4 years away.     ♻️ What if every empty plastic bottle had value? Tamil Nadu has introduced an incentive-based recycling initiative where eligible PET plastic bottles can be returned through Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs), rewarding citizens with ₹5 per eligible bottle. The objective is simple: encourage responsible disposal, reduce plastic waste, and improve recycling rates. It’s a small incentive, but it can create a big impact. When recycling becomes rewarding, more people participate, cleaner public spaces become possible, and valuable plastic is diverted from landfills and waterways. Countries with deposit-return systems have consistently achieved some of the world's highest recycling rates. Initiatives like this show how technology, public participation, and smart policy can work together to build a more sustainable future. If implemented at scale and supported by citizens, such models can strengthen India's circular economy while making our cities cleaner and greener. One bottle may seem insignificant.
