Can Amazon opening its logistics stack to third parties be the final nail in the coffin for "pure-play" courier services in India? I see that possibility... For years, Amazon has been building a logistics beast to serve its own marketplace. Now it’s opening that same network - Amazon Transportation Services and Amazon Supply Chain Services - to third-party brands. When I look at this, I don’t see a simple expansion. I see a move to monetise a cost centre that was already built and running. In India, the biggest cost leak is underutilisation: empty return legs, half-filled trucks, and idle warehouse capacity. If Amazon fills those gaps with external volume, its cost per shipment drops without adding new infrastructure. Now comes the lock-in. If I’m a brand and I move inventory into Amazon’s warehouses, plug into its fulfilment systems, align SLAs, and route returns through it, my operations start depending on that stack. Switching out then means pulling inventory, rebuilding integrations, and resetting customer timelines. That’s expensive and operationally complex.
