Monetize

This section covers everything you need to know about generating revenue from your Instant Game.

Revenue Streams

Instant Games support two primary monetization methods. Most successful games use both in combination.

In-App Purchases (IAP)

In-App Purchases allow you to sell virtual goods, currency, subscriptions, and other digital content directly within your game. Players pay using Facebook Pay, and Facebook handles all payment processing, receipts, tax calculations, and regional pricing on your behalf.
IAP is the best fit for games with deep progression systems, virtual economies, or content that players value enough to pay for directly. Common examples include extra lives, premium currency bundles, cosmetic items, level packs, and subscription passes.

In-App Advertising (IAA)

In-App Advertising lets you earn revenue by displaying Facebook Audience Network ads to your players. You can show ads in several formats — banner ads, interstitial ads, and rewarded video/interstitial ads — each suited to different moments in the player experience.
IAA is effective for reaching the broadest possible audience, since all players (including those who never spend money) generate revenue through ad impressions. Rewarded ads are especially popular because they give players a tangible benefit (such as an extra life or bonus currency) in exchange for watching an ad, creating a positive experience for both the player and the developer.

Hybrid Monetization

The most successful Instant Games combine both IAP and IAA into a hybrid monetization model. This approach ensures that you earn revenue from every player segment:
  • Non-paying players generate revenue through ad views.
  • Light spenders may watch rewarded ads and occasionally make small purchases.
  • High-value players (whales) drive significant IAP revenue and can be shown fewer ads to preserve their experience.
A well-designed hybrid model maximizes total revenue while keeping the player experience positive for everyone. See the Monetization Best Practices guide for strategic advice on designing a hybrid approach.

Prerequisites

Before you begin monetizing your Instant Game, make sure you have:
  1. A published Instant Game — Your game must be live (or at least in development with test users) before you can configure monetization. See the Launch section if you have not set up your app yet.
  2. An App Dashboard account — All monetization configuration happens in the App Dashboard.
  3. A payout account — To receive payments, you need to set up a payout account and associated business entity. The In-App Purchases guide walks you through this process.
