The biggest mistake I made on my first industry interview: I walked in as a PhD student who had done impressive things. They needed a scientist who owned outcomes. Same person. Completely different signal. I didn't understand that distinction until after the interview ended. And honestly, it took me longer than I'd like to admit to stop describing myself like a trainee who had survived, instead of a scientist who had built something. Here's what that distinction actually looks like in practice. STUDENT FRAMING: "I developed a novel assay to measure X." "I contributed to a study on Y." "My dissertation focused on Z." OWNERSHIP FRAMING: "I built a protocol from scratch in a 10-week timeline with no existing template to follow." "I identified a technical bottleneck, mapped the right experts across the organization, and unblocked the project." "When the initial approach failed at week six, I made the decision to pivot — here's how I reasoned through it." The content is often identical. The architecture is completely different. Student framing describes what happened to you during the PhD. Ownership framing describes the decisions you made, the constraints you operated under, and the outcomes you drove. One positions you as a high-performing trainee. The other positions you as a scientist who can be handed a problem and trusted to return with a result. This isn't about inflating your CV. It's about recognizing what the PhD actually trained you to do — and translating it into language that registers in a hiring context. Most late-stage PhDs have more evidence of independent problem ownership than they realize. They just learned to describe it the wrong way. The reframe I use: Stop asking: What did I do? Start asking: What did I own, decide, and deliver — under real constraints? That question will surface the signal buried inside every failed experiment, every pivoted project, and every weekly meeting where your PI pushed you to defend your reasoning. PhDs - If you're looking to get a non-academic job, describe your work in terms of impact, not in terms of tasks. Many PhDs often describe their work in terms of tasks: "conducted experiments," "analyzed data," or "wrote papers." But in non-academic careers, employers care more about the IMPACT of your work than the tasks themselves. A lot of PhDs I speak with struggle to do this translation. The "5 Why's" technique can be super helpful in connecting what you did to why it matters. Asking "Why?" five times can help you get out of the weeds and uncover the broader significance of your work. EXAMPLE: Task: "Coordinated a research project on renewable energy materials" 5 Why's Process: 1️⃣ Why did it need to be coordinated? To keep the team on track with milestones. 2️⃣ Why did you need to keep the team on track? To complete the project on time and within budget. 3️⃣ Why was it important to complete on time and within budget? To meet grant obligations and achieve research goals. 4️⃣ Why did you need to complete the research objectives? To advance innovation in energy storage solutions. 5️⃣ Why was advancing innovation important? To support the transition to sustainable technologies and support future funding. Resulting Impact-Based Statement: "Managed a $1.5M renewable energy research project, delivering results on time and within budget while advancing innovative energy storage solutions and securing future funding opportunities." You can use this technique on your resume, LinkedIn profile and even to prepare for how to give the right answers in interviews. I’ve reviewed thousands of job applications from academic scientists looking to move into biotech startups. Here’s how the best applications stood out ⤵️ Sharing this for folks graduating from PhDs this year or thinking about a change - it’s still a tough market out there, but one that’s hopefully improving! _______ 1️⃣ Show how your personal values align to the company mission. Why? Startups want to change the future. Demonstrate you’ve been independently working towards that same future → this indicates you’ll work hard & find the day to day meaningful. How? Example, for a company developing phages to treat antibiotic resistant bacteria: ✅ My PhD research focused on optimising a gene therapy for children suffering from grey platelet syndrome. During that time, I volunteered in the pediatrics ward. I am motivated by improving health outcomes for the most vulnerable. ❌ Having finished my PhD, I am looking to make the jump into industry. _______ 2️⃣ Directly explain how your scientific expertise can solve the startup’s problems. Why? This shows your ability to connect the dots between “the company problem that needs to be solved” and “the impact I can have.” Startup MVPs have proactivity in spades. How? Example, for a company developing cultured meat: ✅ A big problem for the cultured meat industry is developing immortalised, scalable cell lines. As a genetic engineer, I can generate cell lines capable of feeding millions of people. ❌ My 6 years of experience with mammalian cell culture and background in genetic editing make me a great fit for your company. _______ 3️⃣ Incorporate metrics (beyond publications!) into your resume. Why? Publications = academic currency. Scientific breakthroughs allowing a company to get profitable and survive = startup currency. Publications require detailed science capable of getting past peer-review. Startups require time-boxed, outcomes-oriented science. That’s really different! Metrics indicate you already understand that shift in mindset - and no matter what your project focused on, you can frame it in terms of startup-relevant metrics. How? ✅ Supported two summer students to achieve xyz outcome in three months ✅ Generated 5 novel immune complexes in 2 months ✅ Achieved XYZ while dropping experiment costs by 20% ❌ Conducted a research project analysing how XYZ ❌ Published in a prestigious journal. _______ 4️⃣ Show - don’t state - your communication & collaboration skills. Why? These skills are 10x more important when working at a fast pace with people from different professional backgrounds. How? ✅ Three-minute thesis contest ✅ Industry/startup work experience ✅ Engagement with an entrepreneurship community ✅ Cross-discipline collaboration ✅ A well-written career summary connecting the dots between your skills & the value you can bring to the company. Most PhDs unknowingly hide their most valuable skills and achievements on their résumés, and it’s costing them big opportunities. We’ve published papers. Presented at conferences. Led complex research projects. But the reality? When most of us finish a PhD, we think our résumé speaks for itself. Why? Because we frame everything in academic language. We write for professors, not hiring managers. And in doing so, we bury the skills industry actually cares about. The truth is: A PhD isn’t “just” research. It’s years of project management, data analysis, problem-solving, leadership, stakeholder communication, and strategic thinking. Yet on many CVs, those skills are disguised as: 📄 “Investigated molecular pathways in XYZ” → instead of “Led a cross-functional project with a $200K budget to deliver results under deadline.” 📄 “Wrote and defended dissertation” → instead of “Synthesised complex data into a 300-page report and presented findings to diverse audiences.” If you don’t translate your experience into the language of the role you want… The hiring team won’t recognise your worth, even if you’re the best fit in the room. Here’s the mindset shift: 🎯 Stop thinking “academic CV.” 🎯 Start thinking “industry résumé.” 🎯 Every bullet point should answer: Why should they hire me for this role? 🎓 PhD done, but not sure how to talk about it for an industry job? Read this. Many PhDs think they don’t have the skills for industry. They do. The problem is they don’t show it in the right words. Take a moment. Ask yourself: What did i really do during my PhD? Not just experiments or writing. Think about how you solved problems, ran projects, or worked with people. Here’s how you can say it: ✅ “I did a lot of experiments and optimized protocols.” ➡️ “Optimized laboratory workflows, improving experimental throughput by 30% and reducing reagent costs by implementing more efficient protocols.” ✅ “I presented my work in local and international conferences.” ➡️ “Delivered over 5 presentations to audiences of 50–300 peers, strengthening my public speaking and stakeholder communication skills to influence diverse audiences.” ✅ “I troubleshooted and came up with new solutions for my experiments.” ➡️ “Diagnosed complex technical challenges and developed innovative solutions, saving time and ensuring critical milestones were met under tight deadlines.” ✅ “I supervised young researchers.” ➡️ “Led and mentored a team of 3–5 junior researchers, fostering skill development and ensuring timely delivery of project objectives with a 100% success rate in meeting deadlines.” And so on... Look at your work again. Write down what you did. Add numbers if you can. Your PhD shows you can solve problems, work with people, speak clearly, and finish hard tasks. Academic merits ≠ industry jobs When PhDs move from academia into industry, they often highlight the same things that opened doors in academia: publications, subject-matter expertise, academic achievements. That makes sense - it worked in academia. But in industry, different things are valued. Hiring managers care less about what you studied and much more about how you work and what were the results and outcomes of your work. What actually matters: - How you solve messy, real-world problems - How you communicate with non-experts - How you manage projects with unclear outcomes - How you collaborate, adapt, and keep going when things don’t work The good news? You already built these skills during your PhD. The challenge is this: 👉 You were trained to talk about knowledge, not outcomes and results. If you’re moving into industry, stop asking: “Is my research relevant?” Start asking: “Which skills did I use - and how do I show them that I can do the job?” That shift changes everything.
