Then… silence. No job. No calls. No shot. Why? Because you’ve built 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, not 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲. Here’s what the people who go from “𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴” to $80, $90 or even $100K+ offers actually do (that no course will teach you): 𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 “𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀,” 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 Projects are good. This means: ✅ GitHub repo + architecture diagram ✅ Loom walkthrough: "Here’s how I built it & why" ✅ LinkedIn post: “Business impact of my cloud solution” ✅ Resume bullet: “Reduced X by Y using Z” They don’t just 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 stuff, they 𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘦 it like a portfolio pitch deck. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 Most beginners build what’s 𝘰𝘣𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 (launch an EC2, host a static site). The ones that want the offer, build what’s 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘥: “Automated IAM cleanup across dev/test accounts” “Created centralized logging using ELK & S3 lifecycle policies” “Built a budget alerting system for sandbox projects” These sound advanced, but they’re not. They just 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 companies actually deal with. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 They don’t just say, 👉🏾 “I set up a VPC.” They say, 👉🏾 “I designed a 3-tier VPC for a fintech app that needed PCI-DSS compliance, public ELB, private app + DB tiers, NAT gateway for secure outbound traffic.” Even if it’s all mock, it 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦: 🎯 “I think like an engineer.” 🎯 “I understand context.” 🎯 “I can walk into your problem and build something that makes sense.” 𝟰. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲-𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Every cloud job is a cheat sheet. Instead of guessing what to build, they: * Pull 10 job posts * Circle every tool/problem mentioned * Build mini-projects around those * Post their journey like a series: “One week, one use case” 👉🏾 By week 5, they’ve built a portfolio targeted to actual market demand. 𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 This is subtle but massive: They don’t “hope to break in.” They speak, share, and build like they’re already in. Their content doesn’t say: “I’m learning cloud.” It says: “Here’s how I think about cloud architecture.” That energy gets noticed. That mindset 𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗗𝗠𝘀. I’ve reviewed hundreds of cloud resumes, and here’s the pattern I see: What doesn’t differentiate you: • Another AWS certification • Completed online courses • Theoretical knowledge of services What actually gets you hired: • A GitHub repo showing you deployed a three-tier application on AWS • Evidence you’ve solved real architectural problems • Infrastructure-as-code that demonstrates you understand security and scalability The Learning Trap: Too many aspiring cloud engineers get stuck in perpetual learning mode—jumping from course to course, certification to certification. Meanwhile, the market is screaming for people who can actually build. What Building Projects Actually Teaches You! When you deploy real infrastructure, you encounter: • IAM policies that are too permissive (and how to fix them) • Cost overruns that teach you resource optimization • Network configurations that don’t work , until you understand VPCs deeply • CI/CD pipelines that fail will for e you to master automation. • Monitoring gaps that teach you observability. These lessons don’t come from videos. They come from breaking things and fixing them. Start Here Build something you’d actually use: → Deploy a containerized app with ECS/EKS → Automate infrastructure with Terraform → Create a CI/CD pipeline that deploys on merge → Implement monitoring with CloudWatch and alerting → Document your architecture decisions Then make it public.     You don’t need a Computer Science degree to become a Cloud Engineer. You need: ✅ Curiosity – Stay hungry. Ask questions. Keep learning. ✅ Consistency – Small, daily actions compound into real results. ✅ Linux – Be comfortable on the command line. ✅ Networking – Build relationships. Opportunities come through people. ✅ AWS fundamentals – Understand core services and why they’re used. ✅ Real projects – Build. Break. Fix. Document. Repeat. I know people with degrees who never built anything. I’ve also met self-taught engineers running production workloads. Degrees open doors. Projects create opportunities. Here’s how to position yourself to get in and stand out: ✅ 1. Build Hands-On, Real-World Projects • Build projects that solve actual business problems. • Deploy them in AWS instead of keeping everything local. • Use Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation). • Implement CI/CD using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or CloudBees CI. • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize your environments. • Document every project on GitHub. ⸻ ✅ 2. Be Able to Explain Your Projects This is where many candidates struggle. Be able to confidently explain: • Why you chose each AWS service. • Why your architecture was designed that way. • The business problem your project solves. • The security decisions you made. • How your solution scales. • The challenges you encountered. • How you troubleshot and resolved those challenges. • The tradeoffs you considered. • The business value your solution delivers.     I got tired of scrolling job boards, so I built a serverless AWS pipeline to do it for me.  Meet aws-job-streamer. Every few hours it pulls jobs from 130+ sources, scores each one against my profile with an LLM, drops everything I can't actually take, and emails me a ranked digest with one honest line on why each fits.    The best part? I don't even read them anymore. The app already picked the good ones. I open the email, click apply, and move on.    This is exhibit A for why data and AI engineers automate everything. And a senior engineer who automates his own job search is not lazy. He is more productive and more valuable. Please write that down 😀     Under the hood, the full AWS serverless stack:  - Lambda for the pipeline  - DynamoDB for dedup  - EventBridge on a schedule  - SES for the email digest  - CloudWatch for alarms  - Terraform for all of it  - LLM scoring behind a clean, swappable boundary    Built the way I ship everything: test first (626 tests), CI on every push, cost measured not guessed.     A friend of mine smashed every other candidate in his DevOps application by doing what 99% of people don’t: ❌ No fancy resume ❌ No buzzword salad ✅ Just real, working infrastructure Here’s what he submitted on GitHub: 1. A Terraform module to provision AWS infra (VPC, EC2, S3, IAM) 2. A CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions) to deploy a containerised app to ECS 3. Monitoring via Prometheus + Grafana (with alerting rules) 4. Infrastructure tests using Terratest 5. All automated with a Makefile + clear folder structure 6. He also hosted the app on a real domain, as an example: app.<company>.<his-name>.com To top it off, he wrote a 2-page PDF explaining how to run, test, and deploy everything locally or on AWS with minimal setup. Guess what happened? 📞 The company called him within 24 hours. 💬 They said it was the most impressive application they’d ever received. No nonsense. No job board roulette. Just proof of work.
