  • London is miles ahead of the ‘left behind’ parts of England when it comes to the opportunities available for disadvantaged young people, and the social mobility this creates. Last week at The Sutton Trust, we published the Opportunity Index, which looked at school attainment, employment outcomes, university attendance rates, and earnings for disadvantaged young people – split by parliamentary constituency. This was a huge undertaking incorporating data from over 10m people. The link to the interactive map is at the bottom. The results showed: ▪️ London is miles ahead of the rest of the country. All the top 20, and 42 of the top 50 constituencies are in the capital. ▪️ Outside of London, it’s a mixed picture. The North does badly, although there are some bright spots in Birmingham and Manchester. ▪️ Even in the (relatively prosperous) Southeast, there are places in Surrey and Kent which do badly. ▪️ This is not about rich vs. poor areas. The constituency which creates the best opportunities is East Ham, a poor borough in London. Overall, this demonstrates the huge challenges we face to spread opportunity around the country. Governments of all colours have tried and failed to ‘level up’ the UK. While we applaud the ambition of the current government’s Opportunity Mission, at the moment they do not have the policies in place to deliver significant change. What can we learn from London’s success vs. places – such as the Northeast where I grew up – which do badly? Of course, it is partly about economic opportunities, and we need a long-term plan for inclusive growth. But disparities are also about education: Schools in London do much better in supporting the attainment of disadvantaged kids, and the gap between rich and poor is much lower in the capital. Indeed, a pupil on free school meals (FSM) in London does almost as well as the average non-FSM pupil in some of the worse performing parts of the country. ▪️ We need a national mission to narrow the attainment gap in all parts of the country. University entrance rates in London are massively higher. Around 30% of FSM kids in high opportunity boroughs in London go to Uni, compared to 10% or less from some of the ‘left behind’ places. ▪️ Driving up Uni attendance rates in cold spots, including more systematically using contextual admissions and foundation years to do so would make a big difference. There are many more young people not in education, employment or training in low opportunity areas: ▪️ How do we invest in FE colleges, skills, and apprenticeships to provide multiple pathways to success in those places? This is an urgent problem. Not only are we letting down huge swathes of the next generation, but we’re also holding back economic growth in low opportunity areas by wasting talent.     Nothing says you are ready for modern legal practice quite like spending three years learning nineteenth century doctrine and then getting asked on your first day why a chatbot cannot be hired as counsel. New lawyers are starting to enter offices where clients are already using AI tools, where machine generated text shows up in email threads, and where people assume (incorrectly) that any confident sounding output must be legitimate. Lawyers are expected to explain why a prompt is not legal advice and why a judge will not be swayed by a hallucinated citation that an algorithm invented on a Tuesday afternoon. These are not side issues anymore. They are part of daily practice. Yet most law schools still treat the modern tools of the profession as an optional extra rather than a core competency. Students leave knowing the rule against perpetuities but with little sense of how to evaluate or supervise systems that now sit inside research platforms, drafting tools, and client communication channels. Updating legal education is not about replacing doctrine. It is about giving students the ability to understand the systems they will rely on, identify where those systems break down, and make sound judgments about when technology supports the analysis and when it quietly undermines it. That kind of training requires more than a scattered elective. It requires curriculum that reflects the reality of the work. Law schools that take this seriously will prepare students for the world they are actually entering. Those that do not will keep producing graduates who know the law but are left to figure out modern practice on their own, one awkward chatbot conversation at a time.     In 1975, mathematics teachers in Washington protested the introduction of calculators into classrooms. Their fear was simple and sincere, students would stop thinking. Fast forward to today, and that moment feels uncomfortably familiar. Calculators didn’t destroy mathematics. They changed it. They removed routine computation and forced education to focus higher up the ladder reasoning, interpretation, judgment, and application. Students didn’t become weaker thinkers. The curriculum had to become deeper. AI is today’s calculator moment. The real risk isn’t that learners will stop thinking. It’s that education might cling too tightly to old definitions of thinking. When information becomes instant, the role of educators shifts from deliverers of content to shapers of minds. What matters now isn’t how fast a student can recall information, but how well they can question it, connect it, apply it, and take responsibility for the choices they make with it. History is kind to those who adapt thoughtfully. It’s less forgiving to those who resist change out of fear. We’ve been here before. The opportunity this time is to respond with courage, not panic.     The Inconvenient Truth About Education Elite educational institutions often present themselves as neutral pathways to opportunity, yet their underlying structures tend to reproduce existing social and economic hierarchies. The dominant meritocratic narrative suggests that access is determined by talent and effort. In reality, access is shaped long before admissions by early exposure to enriched learning environments, private tutoring, and high‑quality preparatory schools. These advantages correlate strongly with household income and parental educational attainment. As a result, admissions processes frequently reward accumulated privilege rather than isolate innate ability. Entrance examinations are widely regarded as objective assessments, but they largely measure the long‑term effects of unequal resource distribution. By the time students reach the testing stage, disparities in nutrition, literacy development, school quality, and parental availability have already influenced their academic trajectories. The exam functions as a symbolic equalizer that obscures the structural inequities embedded in the educational pipeline. Policymakers often rely on this symbolism to justify existing systems, despite consistent evidence that opportunity gaps emerge years before formal schooling begins. For individuals who succeed within this architecture, achievement reflects both genuine effort and the presence of enabling conditions that many students never experience. These conditions include stable households, functional schools, psychological safety, and access to mentors who can translate potential into performance. Many equally capable individuals are excluded from the competition long before selection occurs. Their absence is not a reflection of lower ability but of systemic barriers that restrict participation. A policy‑informed response requires interventions across multiple stages of the educational pipeline. Early childhood programs must be expanded to ensure that foundational skills are not determined by socioeconomic status. Public investment in teacher quality, school infrastructure, and community‑based learning resources can reduce disparities in basic education. Admissions processes should incorporate contextual indicators that recognize structural disadvantage rather than relying solely on standardized tests. Targeted scholarships, mentoring programs, and bridge curricula can support high‑potential students who lack preparatory advantages. Without such reforms, elite education will continue to reproduce inequality while maintaining the appearance of fairness.

    A recent in-depth research project on college admissions has unveiled some striking insights about the connection between parental income and college attendance, particularly in the U.S.'s top-tier institutions. 🔍 Key Insights: 1. Selective private colleges exhibit a clear bias towards the wealthy. Those with parents in the top 1% income bracket have significantly higher attendance rates than their peers with similar academic qualifications. 2. Flagship public colleges, in contrast, maintain a more equitable admission system. In-state students across varying income levels attend at comparable rates. 3. Elite private colleges, especially Ivy Leagues, display even more pronounced disparities in admissions. For example, a student from the top 1% income tier is 1.5 times more likely to attend Harvard than another student with the same test score but from a different income group. 4. Legacy admissions, recruitment of athletes, and preferences for students from specific feeder schools often drive this advantage for affluent students. 5. Public universities generally uphold a different mandate and admission process, often not giving preferences based on legacy or donations.     🚨 Widening Proficiency Gaps & Lowering Standards: More disturbing trends in NAEP Results news. The gap between our highest and lowest-performing students has reached an all-time high, and instead of raising the bar, many states are simply lowering their standards. The reality of what has been happening these past few years in education:  ✔️ Dozens of states have lowered proficiency levels on their local exams, making it easier for students to pass without mastering the material. ✔️ Virginia has lowered proficiency standards three times in the last eight years. ✔️ Seven states have weakened graduation requirements, allowing students to earn diplomas without proving essential skills. ✔️ Post-pandemic learning loss and teacher shortages have left students without the necessary support to recover. ✔️ Access to quality instruction isn’t equal, putting underserved communities at an even greater disadvantage. Instead of addressing learning gaps, many states are lowering expectations—and students are the ones paying the price. A system that prioritizes graduation rates over real learning is failing them. These NAEP results should be a wake up call that education and our students are in a crisis. And waiting for a miracle boom in teachers to come rescue these struggling students is simply put: unrealistic and dangerous to the future of education for the U.S. Underpaid and overworked teachers aren't going to gravitate to schools and districts with the most need...they're going to go where they are valued and paid. We have to come up with partnerships that validate their professional experience, compensate them accordingly, and give them the flexibility to have things taken off their plates in order to do the job they do best: TEACH. #EducationCrisis #AchievementGap #EducationEquity #RaisingStandards

    For a long time, we have imagined a linear path: schools and universities educate, companies hire. Today, that model is showing its limitations. The pace of technological change, particularly the rise of artificial intelligence, is shortening the lifespan of skills. In many cases, educational programmes struggle to evolve as quickly as the world of work itself. This is why it is so interesting to see a growing number of companies taking a more active role in education, working alongside schools, universities and local communities to help develop skills that are immediately relevant and applicable. Yet there is an even more important point. The challenge is not simply teaching people how to use AI tools. The skills that will truly matter are those that technology cannot replace: the ability to ask the right questions, think critically, understand complexity and take responsibility for decisions. The real question is not whether education should be the responsibility of schools or businesses. The real challenge is building a new educational partnership in which institutions, universities and employers share responsibility for preparing people not merely to adapt to change, but to shape and lead it. https://lnkd.in/dW_Epk_3
