That caught my attention — not because of what it says about children, but what it reveals about how success really forms. I’ve been thinking about this a lot. In my opinion, chores aren’t just a way to teach discipline — they’re a quiet form of systems thinking. I used to think success came from information. Now I think it comes from interaction — with effort, friction, and consequence. When a child folds clothes or washes dishes, they’re not just learning responsibility. They’re learning causality — that their actions can shape their environment. That’s the seed of agency, and in my view, the foundation of all learning. Here’s what this study really points to: → Chores connect effort to outcome. They teach the mind to see progress as earned, not given. → Screens disconnect action from effect. We react constantly, but change nothing. → Causality builds confidence. The more a child sees impact, the more they believe their effort matters. That’s not just psychology — that’s neurology. The brain builds reward loops around whatever it can control. When effort produces order, we feel grounded. When it doesn’t, we drift. Ever notice how some people stay mentally sharp, even as they age? What these sharper individuals demonstrate is increased cognitive reserve. Cognitive reserve refers to the brain's ability to improvise and find alternate ways of getting a task done. It is closely related to the resilience of the brain and pertains to its capacity to sustain damage (due to aging or other factors) without displaying evident functional impairments in cognitive functioning. This mental resilience can make a world of difference as we age. But how can we actively build and maintain this cognitive reserve? Contrary to popular belief, brain training games or so-called ‘cognitive training’ programs aren’t the solution In 2008, Lumos Labs released their cognitive training program ‘Lumosity’ which they claimed could prevent brain aging and the onset of age-related dementia. One issue? They had no evidence to support their claims and were fined $2 million by the Federal Trade Commission for deceiving consumers. Not cool, Lumos! Many have turned to brain training programs like Lumosity, hoping to preserve their cognitive abilities. However, research has shown that brain training games make you better on those specific games but they don’t help improve memory, attention, perception, or planning more generally. So, what does work? Research suggests that a variety of engaging, everyday activities can help boost and maintain cognitive reserve. Here are some proven strategies: 👉 Lifelong Learning: Engage in educational activities, such as learning a language, taking up bridge or playing an instrument. 👉 Regular Exercise: Engage in physical activities like walking, gardening, yoga, or any other exercise to promote blood flow to the brain. 👉 Socialise: Engage in regular social activities to stimulate your mind and maintain emotional health. 👉 Motor Skills Development: Learn activities that require fine motor skills, such as painting, plumbing or sewing. 👉 Nutrition: Adopt a diet rich in fruits & vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. 👉 Sleep Well: Ensure adequate and quality sleep, crucial for cognitive functions and memory consolidation. a twelve year old athlete cannot process the same instructions as a twenty two year old. obvious. yet we still design sessions as if they can. this became clear when we tried one small change. one cue per rep. junior athletes were receiving layered instructions that sounded sophisticated but created cognitive overload. they were told to split step, read the racquet angle, and anticipate direction at the same time. the intention was good. the result was hesitation. we stripped it back to one cue. split step. accuracy improved by eighteen percent within a few sessions. movement became cleaner, decisions became faster, and confidence followed. nothing about the athletes changed. the design did. this is the principle of age appropriate cognitive load. juniors need simplicity and repetition. seniors can handle scenario stacking and layered decisions. the brain develops over time, and instruction should develop with it. a useful framework is the cognitive load ladder. cue, pair, sequence, scenario. match the level to the developmental stage instead of the competitive ambition. there is also a practical rule. if you are giving more than one instruction to a player under fourteen, you are probably coaching for your comfort rather than their development. coaches working with juniors, what is your one cue per rep equivalent. drop it below. #coaching #sports #learninganddevelopment #youthdevelopment #highperformance

Before we respond to a child's behavior, we have to understand it. Why do we expect children to know how to behave? We have to give them the right tools and teach social skills first. Too often, we ask: "How do I stop this behavior?" But the better question is: "What is this behavior trying to tell me?" Behavior is communication. A child who is hitting, refusing, yelling, or melting down isn't trying to make your day harder—they're communicating that something isn't working for them. Maybe they're: 🤍 Feeling overwhelmed 🤍 Needing to move 🤍 Seeking connection 🤍 Tired, hungry, or overstimulated 🤍 Unsure of expectations 🤍 Scared or lonely Once we begin to understand the why behind the behavior, our focus shifts. Instead of asking, "What's wrong with this child?" we begin asking: • What need isn't being met? • What skill do I need to teach? • How can I support this child before the behavior happens? Then comes the most important reflection: What am I doing in my classroom to support success? As educators, we have tremendous influence. ✨ Are we explicitly teaching social-emotional skills? ✨ Are we modeling calm problem-solving and emotional regulation? ✨ Are we providing visual supports, routines, and predictable expectations? ✨ Are we building relationships before correcting behavior? ✨ Are we giving children the tools they need—not just expecting them to already have them? Children don't automatically know how to regulate emotions, solve conflicts, wait their turn, or express frustration with words. Those are skills. And skills can be taught. When we shift from managing behavior to teaching behavior, everything changes. Because every challenging behavior is an opportunity to teach—not just to discipline. Behavior is communication.
