The culture war clash over diversity, equity, and inclusion will continue forever unless we can bring it from 10,000 ft in the air back down to earth. "Commitment to an inclusive culture for all?" "Marxist philosophy?" "Policies for achieving belonging?" "Wokeism?" Buzzwords against buzzwords against buzzwords, with no one the wiser as to what's actually being discussed. Rachel needs a lactation room, so we're converting a meeting room into one. Steven's going to be a dad and wants to spend time with his newborn kid, so we're expanding "maternal leave benefits" into "parental leave benefits." Andrew's a customer who has shared feedback about our product being inaccessible, so we're having him talk to the product team. Bianca helped us realize that our company's meetings are chaotic and don't make space for everyone's voice, so we're setting meeting norms. Sam worked on debiasing the hiring process at a previous role and we could benefit from that, so we're looking at standardizing our own process. Arjun shared helpful feedback about the difficulty managers face in managing their distributed teams, so we're building out more resources and structure. There is only one "ideology" present in DEI work done right, and it's shared by pretty much every pluralistic democratic society in our world: that everyone deserves dignity, respect, and opportunity regardless of the beliefs, values, needs, circumstances, experiences and perspectives we hold. That's it. The remaining 99.9% of the work is operational. How do we remove barriers to opportunity and fairness in the workplace? How do we meet people's many needs so we can bring out their potential? How do we create an environment where different people can come together and build something bigger than themselves? A great deal of that operational work ought to be done better. Diversity, equity, and inclusion work has a lot of room for improvement, and it'll take everyone's feedback and active involvement — yes, even from skeptics — to ensure that work succeeds. But to get there, we have to get our heads out of the clouds and bring the conversation back down to earth. Flowery abstractions, even if they make us feel righteous and good, will not save us. It's the mundane pragmaticism of speaking in real terms, with real people, to solve real problems, that will break through the misinformation and polarization that keeps us stuck in the status quo.

Let’s talk about Workplace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)! 🌍 As the CEO of Goodman Lantern, I head a vibrant team spread across the world. From how we deliver results to how we solve problems, I have seen that diversity is our strength and inclusion is our superpower. A diverse team brings a wealth of perspectives, fostering creativity and innovation. Inclusion ensures that every voice is heard and valued, making our team more cohesive and collaborative. If you are looking to embrace DEI in the workplace, here are my 3 most important tips: 👇 🌈 Celebrate Differences: Acknowledge and celebrate the unique backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that each team member brings. Host cultural events, share stories, and encourage open dialogue to build understanding and appreciation. 🌈 Foster an Inclusive Culture: Create policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion. This can include flexible working arrangements, mentorship programmes, and regular DEI training. Make sure that everyone feels welcomed and supported in your workplace. 🌈 Lead by Example: As leaders, it’s crucial to model inclusive behaviour. Show empathy, actively listen, and be open to feedback. Encourage diverse viewpoints and make decisions that reflect a commitment to equity and inclusion. Nothing kills motivation faster than a leader who behaves like an employee’s effort doesn’t matter. Teams receiving regular, genuine recognition are significantly more likely to stay engaged and productive than those left unacknowledged. Giving meaningful feedback rather than only criticism consistently improves performance over time. Empowerment, autonomy, and opportunity for growth strongly correlate with higher job satisfaction and better retention. 6 Leadership Moves That Actually Motivate a Team 1. Listen & Encourage Feedback Encourage open feedback and ideas, then act on them. When voices are heard and valued, people feel respected and included. This builds trust and welcomes fresh thinking. 2. Recognise Good Work Publicly Make it a habit to call out achievements. Recognition boosts morale and tells people their effort matters. Teams receiving frequent praise show far higher motivation levels. 3. Challenge for Growth With Support Give meaningful tasks and stretch goals. Push the team to learn, grow and step out of comfort zones. But stay there to support them when they need it. Growth paired with guidance fuels confidence and drive. 4. Show You See the Human, Not Just the Work Caring about the person behind the role matters. Recognise that each team member has ambitions, fears, and strengths. When leaders show empathy and humanity, loyalty and trust deepen. 5. Help Build Their Career Path Learn what they aspire to. Offer opportunities to grow, learn, or lead. Make their ambitions part of the bigger vision. When work links with personal growth, engagement and long-term commitment rise. 6. Trust, Empower and Stand Behind Them Give autonomy. Let them take ownership. Trust in their abilities. Empowerment and not micromanagement build responsibility, creativity, and ownership. Employees grow stronger when they’re heard, valued, supported, trusted and empowered. Agree?

🌱💼 Are you empowering your team to develop and grow? 💼🌱 Studies suggest that sometimes a leader’s perfectionism or ‘only I can do it’ mentality hinders team cohesion and high performance. To foster team development and support, it is crucial for managers, and project leads to cultivate a team culture with a growth mindset. In the Harvard Business Review article "To Help Your Team Grow, Give Them Space to Struggle," we learn key strategies to empower your team's growth. 👉 Shift from a doer to a leader mindset: As a manager or team lead, you need to transition your mindset from personal achievement to developing your team's potential. Ask yourself: How can I support and nurture my team's growth? 👉 Embrace the discomfort of the learning process: True growth happens when individuals can face challenges and learn from them. By reframing struggles as opportunities for growth, you can create an environment that supports and encourages continuous development. 👉 Distinguish between high- and low-stakes tasks: Delegate low-stakes tasks that provide valuable development opportunities for your team without risking significant consequences. Reframe failure and establish a safe and supportive environment where mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities. 👉 Be curious: Cultivate a curious mindset and ask insightful questions that encourage team members to reflect on their approaches and experiences. Practice compassion and grace, offering support and understanding as they navigate their paths to success. As managers and team leaders, we must provide the coaching, guidance, and support necessary for our teams to thrive and reach their full potential. Let's foster a culture of continuous learning, growth, and empowerment within our teams! 🌱✨ Harvard Business Review article by Kelli Thompson #leadership #management #entrepreneurship #founders #highperformance #culture #professionaldevelopment #growthmindset #collaboration  #advising #coaching #bestadvice #jennyfernandez https://lnkd.in/e4vKX5sn

In my inclusive leadership workshops, there’s always a moment when it clicks for leaders—the instant they realise that inclusion isn’t a moral initiative but the foundation of employee engagement. That “aha” comes when they see inclusion through the lens of human motivation: safety, belonging, esteem, and purpose. When framed this way, DEI stops feeling like something they have to do and starts feeling like something they want to do. When framed as engagement, leaders understand that inclusion isn’t separate from performance—it is performance. It’s how we create the conditions where everyone contributes their best. And this framing isn’t just powerful in leadership training—it’s a strategic tool for DEI more broadly. By grounding inclusion in universal human needs, organisations can move beyond awareness and compliance toward cultures that actively motivate and engage all individuals—both under-represented and dominant group members. This approach provides a shared language that unites, rather than divides, tempering backlash and resistance, and making DEI a driver of engagement, innovation, and sustainable performance.

Empowering Organizations To Create Inclusive, High-Performing Teams That Thrive Across Differences | ✅ Global Diversity ✅ DEI+

🌍 The Real Reason Your Team Isn’t Connecting Might Surprise You 🛑 You’ve built a diverse team. Communication seems clear. Everyone speaks the same language. So why do projects stall? Why does feedback get misread? Why do brilliant employees feel misunderstood? Because what you’re facing isn’t a language barrier—it’s a cultural one. 🤔 Here’s what that looks like in real life: ✳ A team member from a collectivist culture avoids challenging a group decision, even when they disagree. ✳ A manager from a direct feedback culture gets labeled “harsh.” ✳ An employee doesn’t speak up in meetings—not because they don’t have ideas, but because interrupting feels disrespectful in their culture. These aren't missteps—they’re misalignments. And they can quietly erode trust, engagement, and performance. 💡 So how do we fix it? Here are 5 ways to reduce misalignments and build stronger, more inclusive teams: 🧭 1. Train for Cultural Competence—Not Just Diversity Don’t stop at DEI 101. Offer immersive training that helps employees navigate different communication styles, values, and worldviews. 🗣 2. Clarify Team Norms Make the invisible visible. Talk about what “respectful communication” means across cultures. Set expectations before conflicts arise. 🛎 3. Slow Down Decision-Making Fast-paced environments often leave diverse perspectives unheard. Build in time to reflect, revisit, and invite global input. 🌍 4. Encourage Curiosity Over Judgment When something feels off, ask: Could this be cultural? This small shift creates room for empathy and deeper connection. 📊 5. Audit Systems for Cultural Bias Review how you evaluate performance, give feedback, and promote leadership. Are your systems inclusive, or unintentionally favoring one style? 🎯 Cultural differences shouldn’t divide your team—they should drive your innovation. If you’re ready to create a workplace where every team member can thrive, I’d love to help. 📅 Book a complimentary call and let’s talk about what cultural competence could look like in your organization. The link is on my profile. Because when we understand each other, we work better together. 💬 #CulturalCompetence #GlobalTeams #InclusiveLeadership #CrossCulturalCommunication #DEIStrategy

We don’t talk enough about the incredible value employee networks bring to organisations. These groups are far more than forums—they are the driving force behind meaningful change, and authentic connections. Employee networks foster belonging by creating safe spaces where individuals feel valued. They amplify underrepresented voices, drive real progress in diversity and inclusion, and strengthen relationships across teams and regions. You think DEI work is challenging? Try doing it without employee networks. These groups are the backbone of progress, turning DEI initiatives from abstract policies into tangible, lived experiences. Their impact goes beyond strategy, they shape culture, drive social change, and build stronger, more resilient organisations. It’s time we truly recognise their impact and commit to investing in their continued success. Because when employee networks thrive, so do we all. #ERGs #employeenetworks #dei

Elite teams operate with a fundamental agreement: we win or lose as one.  This is a mindset of relentless commitment to elevating everyone’s performance, what I call Co-Elevation. Teamship requires establishing and maintaining three high-level focuses that produce Co-Elevation and alignment: 1. 21st-Century Collaboration Traditional meetings are a poor starting point for collaboration because most voices aren’t heard and real thinking happens too late. Start asynchronously by posing a few sharp questions, inviting broad input in a shared document, and letting people contribute thoughtfully before any meeting occurs. When teams do meet (if they even need to), they arrive aligned and ready to decide, which cuts decision time dramatically while expanding participation. 2. Peer-to-Peer Feedback Elite teams make caring and candor non-negotiable. Practices like Candor Breaks and Stress Testing remove the need for heroics by surfacing what’s not being said, engaging every voice, and turning challenge into shared problem-solving. When teams repeat these simple formats, they uncover hidden risks early, innovate faster, shorten cycle time, and build trust. 3. Relationship Building When we coach organizations on teamship transformation, we consistently observe that relationship quality fundamentally determines the effectiveness of collaboration. Traditional approaches rely on chance encounters for relationship development, but my research reveals that this approach is increasingly inadequate, particularly in hybrid and distributed environments. The question isn’t whether to embrace Teamship, but how quickly you can implement the necessary shifts.  Organizations that successfully navigate this transformation position themselves not for incremental improvement but for breakthrough performance. Building relationships among team members on a foundation of commitment and empathy is critical to providing an environment of forgiveness and caring enough to challenge each other. 💠 Inclusive Leadership: Creating a Culture That Embraces Diversity💠 As an HR leader, I’ve seen firsthand how the strength of a company truly lies in its people—and the diversity of perspectives they bring to the table. But real inclusion goes beyond simply hiring a diverse workforce. It’s about creating an environment where every person feels valued, heard, and empowered. As HR leaders, we have the responsibility—and the opportunity—to build inclusive environments that don’t just check boxes, but genuinely empower individuals to bring their whole selves to work. I’m passionate about this topic because it’s a challenge we all need to face head-on: How do we cultivate a culture of belonging that allows everyone to thrive? Here’s what I’ve found works to move the needle in building an inclusive workplace. 🔹 Lead by Example: Leadership sets the tone. Commit to ongoing learning about diverse perspectives and model inclusive behaviors. Your openness can inspire others to follow. 🔹 Foster Open Dialogue: Create safe spaces for employees to voice their experiences, ideas, and concerns. Implement regular check-ins and feedback channels that encourage honest conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). 🔹 Revamp Hiring and Development: Go beyond the resume. Focus on building diverse teams by removing biases in recruitment and offering equal growth opportunities for all employees, regardless of background or identity. 🔹 Measure, Adjust, Repeat: Regularly assess DEI efforts through employee surveys, data analysis, and feedback loops. Be willing to adjust your strategies based on what the data and your employees are telling you. 🔹 Celebrate Differences: Acknowledge and celebrate the diverse cultures, identities, and experiences that make up your organization. Whether through employee resource groups (ERGs) or company-wide events, find ways to amplify diverse voices. Inclusive leadership is a journey, not a destination. It requires ongoing commitment, curiosity, and empathy—but the reward is a workplace where everyone thrives. How is your organization fostering a culture of belonging? If you’re looking for ways to build a culture of belonging, HR Soul Consulting would love to discuss how we can support your organization on this journey. #HRLeadership #InclusiveWorkplace #DEI #CompanyCulture #LeadershipDevelopment #Belonging #soulifyyourhr

Unleashing Creativity and Confidence Through Tower Building: Team Building Management Game Team building exercises are an integral part of fostering collaboration, communication, and camaraderie within any organization. However, traditional team-building activities can sometimes feel mundane or uninspiring. To inject a dose of creativity and boost confidence among team members, consider incorporating tower building using only newspaper and cello tape as a limited form of resources. Tower building as a management game offers a unique and engaging way for teams to work together towards a common goal while overcoming constraints and unleashing their creativity. With just newspapers and cello tape at their disposal, participants are challenged to design and construct the tallest and most stable tower possible within a set timeframe. One of the key learnings from this activity is the importance of effective communication and collaboration within a team. Participants must brainstorm ideas, delegate tasks, and coordinate their efforts to ensure the success of their tower. By working together towards a shared objective, team members learn to leverage each other's strengths, support one another, and communicate openly and effectively. Moreover, tower building fosters problem-solving skills and encourages innovative thinking. Additionally, engaging in a hands-on activity like tower building can significantly boost confidence among team members. As they see their ideas come to life and witness the tangible results of their efforts, individuals gain a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. Success in building a sturdy and towering structure serves as a confidence booster, empowering team members to tackle future challenges with a renewed sense of self-assurance. #TeamBuilding #ManagementGames #CreativityBoost #ConfidenceBuilding #InnovationCulture #CommunicationSkills #ProblemSolving #HandsOnLearning #Collaboration #LeadershipDevelopment #ResourceConstraints #TowerBuilding
