In the summer of 2006, the hottest corporate accessory was a Blackberry. Nobody bought one because it was cool. They bought it because their job required them to answer email at 9pm. And that — not the consumer market — is what paved the road for the iPhone. I think smartglasses need the same moment, and most of the industry is looking in the wrong direction to find it. Right now the pitches split two ways: broad consumer plays with celebrity ads, or industrial and manufacturing use cases. But the Blackberry lesson is that mass adoption came through the office — through ordinary professionals whose employer made the device normal. Even Realities is the one company leaning into this. They just raised $150M at a $1B valuation, and their CEO told me about a third of their users are company executives, using the glasses almost entirely for one thing: communication. High-stakes conversations — speeches, negotiations, interviews. That's a real beachhead. But executives alone don't normalize a category. What does: every white-collar worker who needs to pull up information mid-conversation. Real-time transcription for employees with hearing loss. Translation that lets people work in a language they don't speak fluently. The unglamorous stuff. The camera question is real, and the office may actually be where those norms get settled — most workplaces already have strict recording policies.

In our world of compliance and complex supplier networks, blind spots turn into audit findings and missed delivery windows. Here’s the core move I see working. Combine the real and digital worlds across product and production so horizontal data flows become routine. Think engineering models, test results, materials, building processes, automation code, and performance data moving between teams. Then connect the vertical path. Executives, planners, and operators sharing the same context so decisions line up with actual conditions. That’s where you get predictive maintenance instead of unplanned stops, data‑centric supply chain adjustments instead of last‑minute expedites, energy transparency that feeds credible sustainability metrics, and stronger cybersecurity plans that account for both IT and OT exposure. Pharma adds constraints, but the pattern still holds. IoT devices can read modern and legacy equipment, extending the digital thread into your supplier ecosystem so logistics, production timing, and potential disruptions show up early. A closed loop between development, production, and optimization tightens traceability and speeds corrective action. Digital twins let engineering teams iterate quickly on both process and line design without risking validated operations. Pick one high‑stakes decision and wire it end to end. For many, that’s batch release. Map the horizontal data you need across quality tests, materials, and line performance. Then build the vertical connection so insights reach the teams that plan, schedule, and approve. Keep the scope small, include cybersecurity from day one, and define the single source of truth for that decision. When it works, scale to the next decision.

In a medical setting, clear and immediate communication between healthcare professionals and patients is critical, especially when language differences exist. Smart glasses offering live translation can enable doctors and nurses to understand patient symptoms, concerns, and medical history in real-time, regardless of the language spoken. This can lead to more accurate diagnoses, better patient care, and reduced risk of miscommunication in urgent situations. Furthermore, access to medical information or procedures via voice interaction with an AI, hands-free, could support practitioners during examinations or surgeries. 🔹 Education and Language Learning: For language students, these smart glasses could serve as an immersive and practical tool. Engaging in real-time conversations with native speakers, with the glasses providing discreet translation assistance, can significantly accelerate language acquisition and build confidence. In classrooms, teachers could more easily communicate with students who are English language learners, and students could access explanations or information from an AI tutor through voice commands while working on tasks. 🔹 Emergency and Response: In high-stress, time-sensitive emergency situations, clear communication and rapid access to information are paramount. First responders, paramedics, firefighters, and law enforcement officers often encounter individuals who speak different languages, creating critical communication barriers. Smart glasses with live translation can instantly bridge these gaps, allowing emergency personnel to understand victims, witnesses, or affected individuals regardless of language, leading to faster assessments and more effective aid. Furthermore, the hands-free, voice-activated AI can provide crucial support - imagine a paramedic verbally asking for a patient's known allergies or medical history while simultaneously providing care, or a firefighter receiving hands-free navigation or building blueprints via voice command. The ability to communicate seamlessly and access vital data purely through spoken interaction can dramatically improve response times, coordination, and the overall effectiveness to not only improve, but ultimately save lives.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned in HR technology came during an acquisition. When Office Depot acquired CompuCom, one of the first recommendations was exactly what you'd expect: Move everyone to Oracle HCM. On the surface, it seemed like the obvious choice. One company. One HR platform. One standard way of working. Technically, we could have done it. But before launching another enterprise implementation, we stopped and asked a different question: What business problem are we actually trying to solve? CompuCom employees were already productive. They knew Workday. Adoption was strong, and the platform was meeting their needs. So why create a massive change initiative simply because the systems were different? As we evaluated the options, we chose a different path. Rather than forcing a migration, we designed a bi-directional integration between Workday and Oracle HCM. The outcome? ✅ CompuCom employees continued using the Workday experience they already knew. ✅ Office Depot gained the enterprise reporting, workforce visibility, and operational capabilities needed in Oracle HCM. ✅ We achieved the business objectives of the acquisition while avoiding unnecessary disruption for employees. That experience fundamentally changed how I think about HR transformation. Too often, organizations assume the answer is to replace technology. In reality, the better question is whether replacing the technology actually solves the business problem. Sometimes the best technology decision isn't replacing what works. Here are key insights from my interview — focused on what leaders need to consider before adopting AI-enabled wearables: Innovation in AI-enabled devices like smart glasses is moving faster than organizational and regulatory readiness. Before adopting new tech, understand not just your short-term business goals, but the strategic innovation path you're signing up for. Organizations deploying AI devices take on an elevated responsibility as custodians of personal data. Data security is not a feature — it must exist from design to deployment to daily operations. Trust is not granted by default — especially in a world where skepticism around data capture continues to rise. Every interaction with customers and employees should reinforce transparency and respect for privacy. A responsible AI governance framework must address fairness, bias, transparency, and user control. And it should be re-evaluated every time the technology, data model, or usage expands. Visible indicators (e.g., recording lights or cues) and default data-expiry policies are essential to preserve bystander and user trust. The visual field of cameras and audio capture should be clearly defined and communicated. Surveillance normalization is happening — devices blending into daily life fundamentally change the privacy equation. This demands intentional design choices, not accidental consequences. A shared responsibility model is critical — individuals, companies, and regulators all have a role in protecting rights and experiences. Self-regulation is no longer enough — in safety-critical environments (schools, hospitals, banks), unmonitored recording devices should not be acceptable. Oversight is not bureaucracy — it is risk reduction. Regulatory readiness and auditability are becoming baseline expectations — not optional extras. Security leaders must close the gap between rapid technological advancement and responsible implementation. Doing so is no longer a nice-to-have — it is a strategic imperative. Organizations should navigate this intersection of cybersecurity, AI innovation, and enterprise trust. Future iterations with AR display integration may allow real-time case data to appear directly in a clinician’s field of vision. Where We’re Going ➡️ AI-assisted visualization: Imagine diagnostic data, step-by-step surgical or restorative plans, or alerts appearing in your glasses as you work. ➡️ Seamless VR-haptic integration: Not just practice drills, but immersive pre-clinical training where tactile, cognitive, and visual learning merge. ➡️ Collaboration without borders: Faculty and students across continents can join the same “virtual operatory,” learning, teaching, and innovating together. Challenges to Solve ⚠️ Cost, sustainability, and integration into already crowded curricula. ⚠️ Avoiding tech-for-tech’s-sake—true value comes only when tools improve patient care, student learning, and institutional efficiency. A Call to Action This is where Digital, VR-Haptic Thinkers and innovators in academia and industry must come together. Collaboration—not siloed experiments—will define whether VR/AR becomes a lasting transformation or just another passing fad. Inspiration Technology alone doesn’t change education—it’s how we use it that matters.
