    The question all retailers, especially those with physical stores, need to ask is how they’re adding value. In other words, they must have a clear reason as to why someone should visit them. The nursery department at John Lewis is a good example of how to do this. Nursery is a complex category, especially for first-time parents; shoppers want advice and reassurance. John Lewis already ticks this box because of its high standard of customer service. But they’ve gone further by creating a department that’s engaging, authoritative, and helpful. A mock car helps to demonstrate car seats and allows people to see what prams/strollers will fit in the boot/trunk. There’s a test track so buyers can see what it feels like to move prams across different surfaces. And there’s a whole area where customers can sit down with an advisor. It’s great execution that provides something online cannot replicate.     Say what you will about the Cybercab… and trust me, I’ve said plenty. 😄 But if Reaction Injection Molding (RIM), with color molded directly into the body lives up to the hype, this is a much bigger story than Tesla. Whether it’s a 🚗, 🚜, 🚛, 🚞, construction equipment, or even specialty industrial vehicles, eliminating the paint shop changes the economics of manufacturing. Think about it: ✅ Fewer manufacturing steps. ✅ Lower energy consumption. ✅ No paint defects or rework. ✅ Shorter production cycles. ✅ Reduced VOC emissions. ✅ Lower cost over millions of parts. That’s the kind of innovation that matters regardless of what’s powering the wheels. As someone who’s spent decades around engineered products, I’ve learned that breakthroughs rarely come from one giant invention.     Honda left. Hero stayed. Only one of them had to start from scratch. For years, I thought the Hero-Honda split was simply the end of one of India's biggest business partnerships. The more I looked into it, the more I realised the real story began after the partnership ended. Hero Honda was formed in 1984, combining Honda's engineering with Hero's manufacturing, distribution, and deep understanding of the Indian market. Over the next 26 years, the company transformed India's two-wheeler industry. By 2009, it was selling 4.32 million motorcycles a year, making it the country's undisputed market leader. Then came 2010. Honda exited its 26% stake, the iconic Hero Honda brand disappeared, and suddenly Hero had to build something it had never owned before. Technology. Most people remember the logo change. Very few remember what happened next. Instead of chasing another technology partner, Hero invested in building its own capabilities. Today, its Centre for Innovation & Technology in Jaipur houses 500+ engineers, supported by a global R&D network that has filed 1,000+ patents while developing the next generation of mobility solutions. That's a remarkable transition for a company that once depended on someone else's engineering. Here's what stood out to me: 📍 Partnerships can accelerate growth, but capabilities create independence. 📍 Distribution helped Hero MotoCorp become a market leader. Innovation helped it remain one. 📍 Borrowing a competitive advantage can win you the first chapter. Building your own writes the rest of the story. Looking back, Hero didn't become a stronger company because it partnered with Honda. It became a stronger company because it learned how to succeed without it.     Zero-in on the future of takeout... Takeaway packaging—it's part of the daily rhythm for many of us. We grab coffee, order a quick lunch, or opt for delivery dinner after a busy day. But while it's convenient, the environmental impact is undeniable. Over 269,000 tons of waste from takeout containers and utensils end up in landfills, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions—it's clear we need to rethink takeout packaging, and businesses are starting to take notice. One of the main hurdles they face is finding packaging solutions that balances convenience with sustainability. Alternatives need to be practical, scalable, and truly eco-friendly. Compostable materials, like those made from bagasse, offer an option that biodegrades within a few months. However, the challenge lies in ensuring these materials are disposed of correctly. Without the right infrastructure, even compostable packaging can end up contributing to the same waste issues it's designed to prevent. That's why we need innovators and designers to push harder for sustainable solutions. A great example of forward-thinking design is PriestmanGoode's packaging solution. And more importantly, can it be made affordable for everyone? E-commerce could be the key to bridging this gap. As more of our lives shift online, platforms have the potential to introduce innovations like Zero to a much broader audience. This could be the key to turning niche products into the new norm. The demand for takeout isn't going away, and neither is the need for better packaging. The path forward is long, but with designs like Zero and the reach of e-commerce, we're getting closer to a future where convenience doesn't have to cost the Earth.     Get rid of the shop counter. It's so yesterday. The shop counter in retail shops an artefact of another period? What does it achieve now? It creates a literal and psychological divide between staff and shoppers, anchoring interactions to a transactional mindset in a world that now thrives on fluidity, connection, and immersion. The Counter as a Barrier. Counters act as physical roadblocks, distancing staff from customers. Instead of enabling interaction, they reinforce a static, transactional relationship. In quiet moments, a staff member behind a counter can seem unapproachable or disinterested. Modern retail demands a more fluid, mobile, and customer-led experience—something the traditional counter simply doesn’t support. The Rise of Counter-Free Retail, Several leading retailers have already removed the counter entirely and are reaping the benefits: Apple stores are the benchmark example. With no fixed counters, Apple team members roam the floor with mobile POS devices, assisting customers wherever they are. It’s seamless, personal, and entirely focused on the shopper. Nike’s flagship stores (including Nike Rise and Nike House of Innovation) have no traditional counters. Staff are mobile, and many transactions can be completed via the Nike app, in-store kiosks, or roving team members. Decathlon has introduced self-checkout stations in several global markets, minimising fixed counter space. In some pilot stores, staff use mobile checkout devices or tablets to process payments anywhere on the floor. In Australia, JB Hi-Fi and Cotton On have trialled or implemented mobile POS systems in selected stores, reducing counter congestion during peak times and offering checkout wherever the customer is. Mobile Technology Enables Freedom The evolution of mobile point-of-sale and app-based checkout systems means staff no longer need to be chained to a fixed station. Instead, they become guides, curators, and brand storytellers—free to walk the floor, connect with customers, and personalise the experience. Removing the counter also frees up valuable retail space for brand storytelling, immersive displays, or community engagement—much more valuable than a transactional desk. Security and Structure, Reimagined Some argue counters provide control and security. But today, cloud-based POS, biometric authentication, and mobile devices with security protocols make this concern largely outdated. Staff lockers, mobile cash drawers, and discreet backroom setups are smarter, more customer-friendly alternatives. Designing for Connection, Not Control Ultimately, retail is no longer just about efficiency—it’s about emotion, experience, and engagement. The shop counter, once a symbol of control and structure, now works against the very principles that modern retail stands for. The future of retail is not behind a counter—it’s beside the customer.
