    I've seen AI tools that cost thousands. Enterprise design software with hundreds of features. Prototyping tools that take weeks to master. Nothing prepared me for a transparent sheet of plastic that does it better than all of them. Visualizing a kitchen remodel usually means one of two things. Hours of complex 3D rendering software. Or a massive leap of imagination. Both take time. Both take skill. Both still leave clients uncertain. Then someone built this. A transparent sheet printed with a kitchen layout. Cabinet sections left completely clear. Slide it over any material sample... matte orange, minimalist grey, classic oak, and suddenly... The client sees exactly what their kitchen will look like. I watched a client's face change the moment they saw it. No explanation needed. No tutorial. Just instant clarity. That's when it hit me. I've spent 19 years watching design teams reach for more complex solutions when the simplest one was right in front of them. We add features when we should remove friction. We build apps when we should build clarity. We reach for AI when we need empathy. And yet...a sheet of transparent plastic just solved in seconds what most AI design tools still struggle to do. Make a client feel certain. The best design solutions don't impress you with complexity. They make you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. Innovation doesn't always need a screen. Sometimes it just needs someone willing to see the problem differently.     This is how Anthropic decides what to build next—and it's brilliant. Instead of endless spec documents and roadmap debates, the Claude Code team has cracked the code on feature prioritization: prototype first, decide later. Here's their process (shared by Catherine Wu, Product Lead at Anthropic): Step 1: Idea → Prototype Got a feature idea? Skip the spec. Build a working prototype using Claude Code instead. Step 2: Internal Launch Ship that prototype to all Anthropic engineers immediately. No polish required—just functionality. Step 3: Watch & Listen Track usage religiously. Collect feedback actively. Let real behavior, not opinions, guide decisions. Step 4: Data-Driven Prioritization - High usage + positive feedback → roadmap priority - Low engagement or complaints → back to iteration This "prototype-first product shaping" flips traditional product development on its head. Instead of guessing what users want, they're measuring what users actually use. The beauty? They're dogfooding their own tool to build their own tool. The feedback loop is immediate, honest, and impossible to ignore. The takeaway: Your best product decisions come from real user behavior, not theoretical frameworks. Sometimes the fastest way to validate an idea isn't a survey or interview—it's a working prototype.

    Have you ever spent endless hours on a project just to end up realising that a more straightforward method would have been more effective? This common mistake, referred to as over-engineering, can cause needless complexity and inefficiency when developing new products. Understanding Over-engineering > Over-engineering happens when a solution gets more difficult than it needs to be, usually by adding features or functionalities that do not directly meet the needs of customers. > This can lead to higher costs, longer development cycles, and less user-friendly products. Real-World Example: The Juicero The Juicero, a high-tech juicing machine, was released in 2016. It cost $700 and was designed to squeeze proprietary juice packets with considerable force. Later on, though, it was found that the costly machine was not essential because the same juice bags could be squeezed by hand. The company was eventually shut down as a result of the public outcry following this disclosure. My Own Story: The Overly Complex Website I was in a team early in my career that was assigned with creating a company website. We included the newest interactive elements and design trends in an effort to wow. Feedback received after the launch, however, indicated that visitors found the website overwhelming and challenging to use. In our pursuit of innovation, we had failed to realise the website's main purpose, which is to provide easily comprehensible information. I learnt the importance of simplicity and user-centred design from this experience. Useful Tips to Prevent Over-Engineering 1. Pay attention to the essential needs: Focus on key features that meet user needs and clearly explain the issue you're trying to solve. Don't include features that aren't directly useful. 2. Adopt Incremental Development: Begin with an MVP that satisfies the fundamental specifications. By using this method, you may get user input and decide on new features with knowledge. 3. Put Simplicity First: Use the KISS philosophy, which stands for "Keep It Simple, Stupid." Simpler designs are frequently easier to use and more efficient. 4. Verify Assumptions: Talk to users to learn about their wants and needs. This guarantees that the things you create will actually be useful to them. 5. Promote Open Communication: Create an environment where team members are at ease sharing thoughts and possible difficulties. When strategically integrated, sustainability becomes a framework to identify operational inefficiencies, anticipate future demands, and respond to evolving market conditions. The starting point is recognizing how sustainability issues reveal opportunities for innovation. Rising input costs require rethinking material choices and supply strategies. Climate risk drives the need for resilient product design. Regulation, customer expectations, and resource constraints all point toward reconfiguring business models and value chains. Each business function faces specific triggers. Operations teams respond to inefficiencies in energy or water use. Procurement can reduce exposure by transitioning to circular sourcing. Product development must address the growing demand for low footprint design. Sales and marketing teams face increasing pressure from clients and regulators to demonstrate real, measurable impact. Several innovation pathways are already proving effective. These include redesigning products with lower impact materials, modular components, and take back systems. Business model shifts such as repair programs, resale strategies, and service based delivery models can extend product value. Digital tools enable smarter operations and transparency for customers. Functional teams require clear prompts to connect sustainability to their daily work. Operations can identify areas where reducing emissions also cuts costs. R&D teams should explore how to design for circularity from the beginning. Sales teams can develop solutions that align with client ESG targets. Finance can evaluate payback periods and risk adjusted returns. HR can focus on building a culture of sustainable problem solving. Impact measurement is essential to validate innovation efforts. Metrics may include revenue from sustainable offerings, product carbon intensity, emissions avoided, client retention linked to ESG solutions, and time to market for low impact products. Implementing innovation at scale requires specific tools. These include life cycle assessment platforms, circular design processes, materiality assessments, innovation accelerators, and sustainability linked finance instruments to fund new initiatives. Sustainability driven innovation is a strategic process embedded across the business. Reparability: We’re empowering customers to extend product lifespans with features such as replaceable batteries, keyboards, and upgradable cooling systems, designed for easy servicing. This not only simplifies maintenance but also aligns with the growing Right to Repair movement in Europe and beyond. 6. Second life: We prioritize creating durable products that can be returned, refreshed, and reintroduced into the world.     🌿 Learning to Design More Sustainably: Insights from an Eco-Product Expert In the rapidly evolving fashion industry, sustainability is moving from a niche concern to a core component of product design. As an eco-product expert, my mission is to guide and inspire brands towards more environmentally friendly practices, beginning right at the design stage. This commitment to sustainability is crucial because every decision in product design reverberates through the entire lifecycle of an item. 👖 Consider the anatomy of a simple garment, such as a pair of jeans. An attached image vividly breaks down the numerous components involved: from threads, buttons, and rivets to denim, labels, and dyes. Each component is an opportunity for sustainable innovation. 🔩 Take, for instance, the button. Traditionally, jean buttons are a challenge for recycling due to their permanent attachment. By redesigning the button as a screw-on, we not only facilitate easy removal at the end of the garment's life, enhancing recyclability, but also allow the button to be reused on another item, thereby extending its lifecycle and reducing waste. 🌱 Moving to the fabric itself, denim is typically cotton-based, which is water and chemical-intensive. An alternative like hemp can drastically reduce the environmental footprint as it requires significantly less water and fewer chemicals. Incorporating such materials into designs is not just about substituting one for another; it’s about rethinking the system to prioritise ecological balance. ♻️ Consider also the leather-like labels often found on jeans. These are usually made from plastics and are purely decorative. Eliminating these and opting for water-based ink prints directly on the fabric can significantly reduce plastic use and the overall environmental impact. Similarly, shifting from conventional dyes to environmentally kinder options can mitigate pollution and enhance the sustainability of the production process. 🌍 As designers and product specialists, we have the power and responsibility to lead the charge in sustainable design. By analysing and rethinking each component of a product from an eco-design perspective, we can make profound contributions to sustainability. This approach not only helps in reducing the environmental impact but also aligns with the growing consumer demand for responsible and ethical products. 💡 By supporting innovation and challenging traditional manufacturing processes, we can transform how products are designed, produced, and perceived.     Saudi Arabia is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most compelling CX benchmarks. Consumers in the Kingdom now expect faster resolutions, highly personalized engagement, and seamless omnichannel journeys, often at levels surpassing global averages. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the fastest-growing digital experience markets. So, what can global organizations learn from this transformation? 1. Lead with ambition, not limitations. CX in Saudi Arabia starts with a Vision 2030 mindset: If customers deserve better, we build better. This simple shift reframes the entire operating model. Instead of asking, “What can we deliver with our current capabilities?” the question becomes, “What experience should our customers truly have?” That ambition accelerates innovation and establishes a culture where exceptional service is the norm. 2. Localize deeply. Relevance is a performance driver. Global playbooks don’t automatically translate to the Saudi context. Every touchpoint, from language, to culture, tone, service rituals, even design cues must reflect local expectations. That’s why solutions like HUMAIN, built natively in Arabic and shaped around regional behavior, are gaining momentum in experience-led organizations. 3. Balance digital scale with human-centered service. Saudi Arabia’s CX leaders blend AI, automation, and human-centered service to achieve both speed and meaning. Take Balady | بلدي+, the navigation and city services app in the Kingdom as an example. It combines advanced mapping with thoughtful, human-centered design to deliver accurate, hyper-local navigation, service requests, neighborhood insights, and real-world relevance. It’s a powerful example of how CX becomes transformative when technology is grounded in human behavior. 4. Co-create with the youth. With more than 60% of the population under 35, young Saudis are redefining what “great experience” means: simple, fast, intuitive, transparent, and mobile-first. Leading organizations don’t design for the youth, they design with them. When a generation this influential guides experience design, services evolve faster, get smarter, and stay relevant. Saudi Arabia’s CX transformation is more than a national success story. I see it as a blueprint. The world is beginning to take notice because the Kingdom shows what becomes possible when ambition, culture, and human-centered innovation move in the same direction. For global companies looking to elevate their own customer experiences, Saudi Arabia isn’t just an example to admire but also a place to learn from.
