    Hope is not a plan. Don’t plan for what’s easy—plan for what will break you. When it comes to emergency management, my philosophy is simple: Think Big. Go Big. Go Fast. Be Smart About It. This isn’t theory. It’s what works when everything else is falling apart. 1. Think Big Plan for the disaster you can’t handle—not the one you can. Too many plans are written for the expected. You’ve got to plan for the event that could crush you. If you only plan for the average storm, the big one will wipe you out. But if you plan for the worst, you can always scale back. Example: If a Category 5 hurricane is possible, don’t base your plan on a Cat 2. Assume the power's out, roads are gone, comms are down, and you’re on your own for days. Can you still operate? 2. Go Big Lead with overwhelming force. Don’t wait to be asked. Disasters move faster than bureaucracy. By the time the official request comes in, it may already be too late. Don’t wait to assess. If it’s bad, move. You can always scale down. You can’t recover lost time. Example: If there’s a fast-moving wildfire or flash flood, surge fire crews, helicopters, trucks—before the paperwork. You can send them home later. But you can't rewind the clock. 3. Go Fast Speed beats perfection. Move now—adjust later. You’re never going to have perfect situational awareness. Waiting for full clarity gives the disaster time to grow. In a crisis, the biggest risk is moving too slow—not making the wrong move. Example: Don’t wait for a confirmed casualty list before launching search-and-rescue. If people are trapped, get boots on the ground. Speed is life. 4. Be Smart About It Use your experience, your partners, and your data. Throwing resources blindly isn’t leadership. You’ve got to think while you move—use what you know and who you trust. You don’t have unlimited fuel, people, or equipment. Make every action count. Example: Tap mutual aid early. Bring in the private sector. Use volunteer networks. This isn’t about control—it’s about coordination and impact. Putting It into Practice Exercises: Don’t run easy drills. Stress the system. Break it. That’s how you find the gaps. Policy: Build in logistics and authority for early action. If you’re waiting for approvals, you’re already behind. Messaging: Be clear. Be fast. No sugarcoating. Culture: Build teams that move fast, take initiative, and trust each other. Bureaucracy kills momentum. Bottom Line Disasters don’t care about your process. They don’t wait for consensus. You either act—or people die. So: Think Big. Go Big. Go Fast. Be Smart About It. That’s how you save lives.

    The Rule of Threes (in survival): Shelter — Three hours Water — Three days Food — Three weeks In other words, you should assume you can survive without shelter for three hours, without water for three days, and without food for three weeks. In an urban environment, the Rule of Threes still applies. The solutions are just easier to find, probably as close as your nearest Costco. At the very least, go out and purchase the following: Emergency blankets and sleeping bags. Make sure they’re rated for the lowest recorded temperature in your area. In a home robbed of power, “shelter” equals warmth. If you have a chimney, get seasoned wood; if not, get a vent-free gas stove. Don’t forget the fuel. Two weeks’ worth of water. Budget at least one gallon per person per day, and backup water purification tablets are a good idea. If you live close to the ocean, you could also buy a desalinator for turning salt water into potable water. Two weeks’ worth of food with a long shelf life. Lentils, rice, beans, canned vegetables, etc. Protein bars are a good supplement and provide some variety, as do military MREs. Emergency lighting, including a few headlamps, and a ton of batteries. First-aid kit and (for the ambitious) extra antibiotics. Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and Azithromycin (Z-Paks), while imperfect, are good broad-spectrum antibiotics. This basic prep might seem crazy if you’ve never been caught in a disaster. No one in SF expected the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, either, but it left thousands without running water for 10 days, and without power for four days.

    Running a hospitality group through a regional conflict teaches you things no MBA program covers. Here is what the last few weeks built in me. Hospitality is one of the most volatile industries in the world. We get hit first and hardest. Covid shut us down overnight. Regional conflict empties dining rooms before most sectors even feel the pressure. No buffer, no grace period. So how do you survive intact? Your team comes first. Always. Before cash, before landlords, before anything operational, your people are absorbing fear, uncertainty, and exhaustion in real time. I spent more time in conversations about morale than about P&L during the worst weeks. That was the right call. A healthy balance sheet is not conservative thinking. It is survival infrastructure. Cash is not just liquidity. It is options. It buys you time to make good decisions instead of desperate ones. Companies that entered this period overleveraged did not come out intact. Manage your stakeholders before they manage you. Landlords and suppliers will remember how you showed up during hard times. Proactive communication, honest conversations, negotiated solutions. These build more trust than a decade of smooth sailing. Keep building. Even in the dark. When business slows, the instinct is to freeze. Resist it. The operators who come out ahead use the downtime to prepare. New concepts, new markets, new infrastructure. When the wave returns, you need to already be on your feet. The flip side of this industry is real. When things stabilize, people come back hungry. For food, for music, for each other. The operators who stayed ready don’t just recover. They lead.

    How are you stress-testing your “Plan B”? The Gulf War caused much uncertainty. Some of my close acquaintances have operations dependent on the Middle East. They were severely affected by the closing of the Strait of Hormuz. While this might have been a temporary setback, it got me thinking about how 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲” 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸. We saw this during COVID. The companies that made it through weren’t just lucky; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻. So, while you may be able to predict the next global crisis, the real question is 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘀? I look at 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲: A close friend’s company established a niche as a “Middle East Expert” in the event industry. The war exposed their dependency on a single market. The same niche became a liability. We should 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆—a specific supplier, a key market, or a single partner—𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄. That’s your most urgent vulnerability. 𝗙𝗶𝘅 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘁” 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: Build one quality operating standard that gives you a competitive advantage over others. At Suburban Diagnostics, we actually secured the NABL accreditation when swine flu hit, to be able to test for it. That accreditation became our boon, our safety net to continue testing. We didn’t do it because we saw a pandemic coming; We did it because 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗸𝘆. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘆: Know your “Zero Revenue” number. Exactly how many months can you last if the taps turn off tomorrow? 𝟯 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲. That’s my thumb rule. If that number makes you sweat, it’s time to stop expanding and start building your corpus. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼-𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁. Like I always say: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱-𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

    Crisis hits. Systems fail. People panic. 🚨 When the cyclone hit, it was a stress test in real time. It was preparedness, resilience, and decision-making under pressure. Sound familiar? It should. Because whether it's a natural disaster or a cyber crisis, the lessons are the same. ⚡️Not everyone had the right intel. Some ignored official warnings. Others downplayed the threat. We see this in cyber all the time - leaders dismissing risks, teams scrambling at the last minute, people thinking, “It won’t happen to us.” 💡 Lesson learned: Complacency is the real danger. Whether it's a storm or a cyber attack, ignoring the warning signs can cost you everything. ⚡️Some had a Plan B. Generators. Water. Backup supplies. ❌ Others? Completely unprepared. No power, no phone, no way to communicate. 💡 Lesson learned: You don’t prepare when the crisis hits. You prepare long before. ⚡️Panic buying. 🧻😉 People grabbing more than they need, leaving others stranded. ⚖️ Resource management matters. Buy what you need. Think about the whole community. 💡 Lesson learned: In a crisis, greed creates chaos. Be smart. Be strategic. ⚡️No internet. No phone. No updates. ✍️ Back to pen and paper. Thinking ahead. Prioritising what matters. 💡 Lesson learned: Tech fails. Resilience is knowing how to operate without it. Who kept the world running? The emergency crews. The linemen in the rain. The fire and rescue clearing roads. The electricians and plumbers who will work overtime to rebuild. Real heroes don’t wear capes - they wear high-vis. And who reminded us that community matters most? The neighbor checking on the elderly. The friend making sure pets are safe. When everything fails, it’s people - that pull us through. 🛑 Fail to prepare, and you prepare to fail. 💪 Test your resilience before it’s tested for you. 🔄 Adapt. Lead. Execute. Because when the storm hits - you don’t rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your preparation.

  • Flash flooding is becoming more frequent and less predictable across the U.S. In the Appalachian region, communities often get only a few hours of warning, putting lives, infrastructure, and local economies at risk. Through the #IBMImpactAccelerator, IBM is collaborating with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Center for Secure Water to change that, with the project coordinated by Professor Ana Barros from the Civil and Environmental Engineering at Illinois department. Pairing Illinois’ hydrology and precipitation modeling with IBM technologies like watsonx.ai, IBM Cloud for Government, and Cloud Pak for Data, the team is improving rainfall prediction and flood forecasting in complex mountainous terrain. Two key innovations are emerging: 💡Enhanced Precipitation Forecasting, which uses AI to correct errors in leading weather models 💡Flood View, a tool that integrates this enhanced rainfall data with hydrology models, delivering earlier flash flood warnings through an interactive map, alerts, and local watershed insights Flood View is already supporting the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). NPS is using Flood View to strengthen disaster preparedness by planning road and park closures in advance and monitoring specific points of interest across the parks. With more reliable forecasts, extending lead time from roughly six hours to up to 48 hours, communities gain critical time to prepare, protect infrastructure and stay safe. In our lifetime, we’ve read about cyclones, tsunamis, wildfires, unprecedented floods, and many more. I vividly remember in 1977, Andhra Pradesh was struck by a tropical cyclone that claimed over 10,000 lives. I was in class 9, and our school had organized a relief and donation drive. Within days, I was part of the school group that visited the devastated areas. It left a deep impression on me, witnessing the unexpected suffering of families losing everything. Today, we have early warning systems and standard protocols for disaster management; still, the loss of human lives, livelihoods, cattle, and economies persists. Whether it is a seismic shift in the climate or the man-made volatility of kinetic conflicts, the challenge is: how do we protect life? This is where AI could become truly transformative. AI models can predict hurricanes, floods, and wildfires with increasing precision. Google’s AI-powered Flood Hub now provides riverine flood forecasts in 100+ countries, which reach communities of ~700 million people. Drones with AI vision now detect survivors in collapsed buildings and flood zones. Autonomous robots assist firefighters by navigating hazardous areas that no human could safely enter. Bigger forces like UN Global Pulse, Google DeepMind, and startups such as CrisisAI and BlackBerry AtHoc are embedding AI into global crisis resilience frameworks. Governments, too, are beginning to integrate AI into their national disaster management systems. AI shifts crises from being reactive events to proactively managed risks.     WHO steps up response to meet rising #health needs after #earthquake in Eastern #Afghanistan: US$ 4 million urgently needed for lifesaving health assistance The World Health Organization is scaling up its #emergency response after a devastating 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Eastern Region on 31 August, killing more than 1457 people and injuring over 3394 The numbers are expected to rise in the coming days. Entire families have been buried under rubble. More than 6782 homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands homeless and exposed to harsh conditions. Hospitals are overwhelmed with the influx of severely injured patients, many in need of urgent surgery and #critical #medical #care WHO’s immediate response has included 23 metric tons of #medicines and #medical #supplies, enough to treat more than 2000 patients, in addition to other emergency health supplies and staff delivered to health facilities in the affected provinces Fifteen #ambulances have been mobilized to transport and refer the injured and 6 mobile health teams are operating in the hardest-hit districts, providing first aid, outpatient care, #maternal and #child health services, #vaccinations and essential #medicines To ease the pressure on #hospitals, WHO has distributed more than 24 000 units of intravenous fluids. Seventeen WHO-supported surveillance teams are on the ground monitoring health conditions to quickly detect and respond to potential #outbreaks “When we speak of casualties, we are speaking of families and communities in crisis,” said WHO Deputy Representative in Afghanistan Dr Mukta Sharma. “Our teams are working around the clock to deliver lifesaving care in areas devastated by the earthquake. The needs are immense. We urgently require more resources to sustain our operations and prevent further losses.” Thousands of families are displaced, living in overcrowded shelters with little access to clean water and sanitation. These conditions heighten the risk of disease outbreaks, and there is an urgent need for basic mental health and #psychosocial #support to address the emotional toll of the disaster. Every hour counts. Hospitals are struggling, families are grieving and survivors have lost everything. With timely support we can expand trauma care, prevent disease and provide vital mental health services.     🔥 The Dominant Consequence Is Often Not the Dominant Risk ... (Part TWO) "From Consequence to Risk: Why Location and Exposure Matter More Than Severity Alone" We often argue about which consequence is worst: Jet fire? VCE? BLEVE? But that question misses the point. From a single hazardous release, multiple consequences can evolve, each with different footprints, reach, and interaction with people and assets. 🧠 What matters is not just how severe a phenomenon is, but: • Where it occurs • Who is exposed • For how long • How vulnerable the receptor is A few familiar thresholds illustrate are listed below: 🔥 Thermal Effect: Jet Fire / Pool Fire / Fire Ball 37.5 kW/m² → escalation and equipment failure threshold for (3-5 min exposure) 12.5 kW/m² → 30% Lethality for Indoors Onshore & 70% Lethality for Outdoor & Offshore 🔥 Flash Fire: (Within LFL contour)  → 100% Lethality 💥 Explosion Effect (0.5 bar) Overpressure → (50% - 100%) Lethality for Personnel Onshore (0.2-0.3 bar) Overpressure → (100%) Lethality for Personnel Offshore ☠️ Toxic Release (No Ignition) ERPG-2 / AEGL-2 (chemical-specific) → serious irreversible health effects (For about 1hr exposure) This is why tools like PHAST and SAFETI model consequence chains, not single events, and why facility siting and QRA do not depend on severity, but on understanding where and how consequences propagate. 👉 Dominant consequence ≠ dominant risk This distinction is also central to how risk decisions are ultimately made. Risk reduction is not about eliminating the most severe consequence at any cost, but about understanding which scenarios drive exposure often enough to justify additional safeguards. That balance among consequences, frequency, and practicality is where ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) comes into play.
