    A poacher’s paradise becomes a haven for wildlife In northern Kyrgyzstan, once a stronghold of illegal hunting, roe deer are returning to the highlands. Conservationists now count over 250 individuals where there were just 33 a decade ago. The resurgence isn’t due to sweeping government enforcement or outside intervention—it’s the work of villagers, reports Sonam Lama Hyolmo. A network of community-based conservancies, supported by local NGOs, is quietly reshaping conservation in Kyrgyzstan’s rugged backcountry. Shumkar-Tor, one of the country’s earliest such efforts, began in 2012 in the wake of political upheaval and post-Soviet resource collapse. What started as survival-driven hunting turned into a conservation crisis as wildlife populations plummeted. To counter the decline, organizations like the Ilbirs Foundation began training residents to monitor wildlife, supplying GPS trackers, patrol gear, and walkie-talkies. Today, over 80 locals across 10 conservancies patrol vast territories on foot, horseback, and, increasingly, with digital tools like SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool). “The local community’s ownership and attitude shift towards species conservation has made this possible,” says Zairbek Kubanychbekov, Ilbirs’s director. Villagers’ deep knowledge of terrain and wildlife gives them an edge over poachers—and overstate-employed rangers, of whom there are too few to cover the immense landscapes effectively. These grassroots patrols have led to fines and arrests: for illegal logging, the shooting of marmots and partridges, and even the seizure of 3.5 tons of illegally harvested Persian onions. At Jashyl-Oroon conservancy, which spans 250,000 hectares, camera traps and GPS-enabled patrols have improved response times and increased deterrence. But challenges persist. Poachers often use thermal imaging tools and carry weapons. Some are rumored to have ties to officials. Yet local volunteers are less vulnerable to intimidation—they’re unpaid and unafraid of losing jobs. To bolster frontline efforts, the Ministry of Natural Resources is digitizing wildlife trade records and improving coordination with border agencies. An electronic database now verifies species permits under CITES, a global conservation treaty. Conservation in Kyrgyzstan remains fragile. But in the mountains where snow leopards roam and red deer graze, the steady return of wildlife suggests something rare: a community-driven effort not just to survive, but to restore. 📰 Mongabay News: https://lnkd.in/gVr4yhpD

    Two Villages, One Lesson: The Power of Communities in Sustaining the Environment What can two villages—separated by geography, culture, and history—teach us about sustainability? At first glance, very little. One is a medieval English village nestled in the Cotswolds. The other is a tribal village hidden in the hills of Meghalaya. Yet both offer perhaps the most powerful lesson for our climate-challenged world: “Environmental sustainability begins with communities—not policies alone.” Castle Combe, often called the "Prettiest Village in England," has preserved its natural and architectural heritage for centuries through strict conservation rules, responsible tourism, and community stewardship. Its timeless charm shows how communities can preserve heritage while embracing sustainability. Mawlynnong, known as "Asia's Cleanest Village," demonstrates how indigenous wisdom and collective responsibility can create an ecosystem where cleanliness is not a campaign—but a culture. The village is a global example of how local traditions can drive sustainable living. The real story is not about clean streets or beautiful landscapes. It is about people. ❖ In Castle Combe, residents, local councils, and preservation bodies work together to safeguard heritage and manage tourism responsibly—ensuring that economic prosperity does not come at the expense of ecological balance or cultural identity. Their experience highlights the power of community stewardship in preserving both heritage and nature. ❖ In Mawlynnong, environmental stewardship begins at home. Children learn that cleanliness is a shared responsibility, while waste segregation, limited plastic use, and community participation make sustainability a way of life. The village shows how environmental consciousness is most effective when nurtured from a young age. Both villages reveal an important ESG truth: Sustainability is strongest when communities become custodians of their environment rather than mere beneficiaries of it. In an era of climate change, urban pollution, and resource stress, these villages remind us that lasting environmental change does not always require billion-dollar investments or sophisticated technologies. Often, the most effective solutions emerge from collective action and shared values. Sometimes, it begins with: ❖ Shared responsibility ❖ Cultural values ❖ Local governance ❖ Intergenerational learning The future of sustainability may not lie only in smart cities and advanced technologies. It may lie in communities that have quietly practised sustainable living for generations. As policymakers, businesses, and societies seek pathways toward a more sustainable future, the experiences of Castle Combe and Mawlynnong offer a simple yet profound lesson: when communities care, ecosystems thrive.

    Our recent study, led by Shahrzad Gholami from the Microsoft AI for Good Lab in collaboration with Derek Lee and Monica Bond from the WILD NATURE INSTITUTE , has just been published in Nature Scientific Reports The paper introduces GIRAFFE , Generalized Image-based Re-identification using AI for Fauna Feature Extraction , an AI-powered system for wildlife re-identification in conservation. Animal re-identification is a critical tool for conservation. It enables researchers to estimate population size, study movement and behavior, understand demographic trends, and evaluate whether conservation programs and policies are working. Historically, identifying individual animals has often required physical tags, collars, or time-consuming manual review of images. These approaches can be expensive, invasive, and difficult to scale. With GIRAFFE, we show that AI can re-identify individual giraffes using only photographs. By analyzing the unique spot patterns of each animal, the system can identify known individuals and help organize new individuals for expert review. This makes wildlife monitoring faster, more scalable, more cost-effective, and more accessible to conservation teams in the field.     Standing in a bustling Seoul street last year, I watched something remarkable unfold. What started as a typical city block transformed into a canvas for environmental change, vibrant artwork surrounding drains, turning potential litter spots into visual reminders of our shared responsibility. This wasn't just street art. It was community engagement in action. In #SouthKorea 🇰🇷, our Philip Morris International Korea team partnered with local government, the Korea Green Foundation, and local artists to tackle cigarette butt litter differently. Instead of just organizing clean-ups, they created an ecosystem of change: 400+ volunteers collecting 300 bags of waste, students creating anti-littering artwork, and entire neighborhoods becoming part of the solution. What struck me most was the ripple effect. One clean-up event in Yangsan evolved into a year-round sustainability hub. By September, 666 volunteers had collected over 18,000 cigarette butts, but more importantly, sparked conversations that are changing behaviors. Meanwhile in #Tunisia 🇹🇳, a different challenge led to equally innovative collaboration. Young entrepreneurs at startup Wayout developed "Zigofiltres"—simple cages for drains that prevent flooding by capturing cigarette butt litter before it blocks waterways. 246 of these devices now protect one of Tunisia's most flood-prone municipalities. Two countries. Two different ways of addressing a same challenge.     Can AI stop an extinction before it starts? 🌍 Scientists predict that one million species are currently at risk of extinction. If we lose them, we lose the biological foundations of our food security and modern medicine. The race is on to capture their "genetic blueprints" before they disappear forever. Google’s AI is turning what once seemed like a moonshot into a reality: 🧬 From Years to Days: Sequencing the first human genome took 13 years and $3 billion. Today, using AI tools like DeepPolisher and DeepVariant, we can sequence entire species in days with stellar accuracy and for a fraction of the cost. 🦜 Proven Success: Researchers used genomic data to pull the kākāpō, (the world’s only nocturnal, flightless parrot) back from the brink of extinction through a highly targeted breeding plan. 🐢 Open Science: Google has supported the sequencing of 13 endangered species, including the critically endangered elongated tortoise, and has pledged to help sequence 150 more, making the data free for all conservationists.     How can we use storytelling to support India’s Endangered Species? When you give an animal a name, a backstory, a song - you make it unforgettable. So how can we tell stories that don’t just inform, but protect? Let’s explore. Step 1 – Start with a character, not a cause Conservation begins with emotion. Before the science, help people feel the life behind the species. Take Collarwali, the legendary tigress of Pench Tiger Reserve. She raised 29 cubs, was known by name, and featured in Tiger: Spy in the Jungle. Her story became a living emblem of India’s Project Tiger and a symbol of motherhood and survival. Step 2 – Let communities lead the narrative When storytelling comes from within, it sticks. Culture becomes conservation. A powerful example: The Hargila Army in Assam. Led by Purnima Devi Barman, this women-led movement turned the once-reviled greater adjutant stork into a beloved icon - celebrated through sarees, songs, and community rituals. Step 3 – Use creative mediums to build connection Not everyone reads reports, but everyone responds to emotion. Look at The Photo Ark by Joel Sartore. With portraits of 16,000 species on black or white backgrounds, it makes the viewer focus on one thing: the face of a vanishing life. It’s science told through stillness - and it’s unforgettable. Step 4 – Celebrate what’s working Hope motivates more than guilt. Share recovery, not just risk. For instance, the revival of the one-horned rhino in Kaziranga. Once near extinction, their population surged thanks to patrols, community education, and strong will. Today, they are a success story and a symbol of resilience. Step 5 – Bridge science and emotion Facts need feeling to travel far. Make the research relatable and real. One great example is Wildlife Messengers, a documentary filmed by researchers in Peru. By handing the camera to scientists and communities, it turns data into something human. The result? A story that raised funds, awareness and empathy. Endangered species don’t just need conservation plans. They need stories. And when told with care and truth, those stories can help entire ecosystems survive.     Most hammerhead sharks, iconic and ecologically significant species, are now facing severe threats of extinction. As apex predators, they play a crucial role in maintaining the balance and health of marine ecosystems. However, populations of majority of these species have suffered alarming declines in recent decades, driven by overfishing and the international trade that highly values their fins. Through our research and fieldwork across Asia, I have witnessed firsthand how unsustainable fishing practices impact hammerhead populations in several countries. Therefore, my research focuses on understanding their current population status, identifying key habitats, and investigating factors influencing post-capture survival—an essential step in developing effective conservation strategies, particularly for individuals caught and discarded as bycatch. For effective and long-term protection, international synergy is essential. Coordinated efforts must focus on revising and developing both local and international policies, significantly improving fisheries management and monitoring, and promoting climate-smart, community-based conservation. Only through synchronized and science-based action can we ensure the survival of these species and safeguard the future of our oceans. #sharks #conservation #hammerhead #Asia #biodiversity #fisheries

    We look at the latest advances in biodiversity monitoring with our open-source AI model SpeciesNet. ✨ 📸 Accurate wildlife monitoring is vital for protecting endangered species, SpeciesNet is a Google-developed AI model trained to identify nearly 2,500 categories of mammals, birds and reptiles in camera trap images, supported by 65 million labeled images provided by our conservation partners.  ✨  Originally part of the Wildlife Insights platform, we released SpeciesNet into the wild one year ago as an open-source tool. By making the code and model weights publicly available, we are seeing creative research groups around the world adapt the technology to their specific environments. ✨  High Accuracy: The model uses a convolutional neural network to identify animals in varying conditions of lighting, angle, and distance. It successfully finds 99.4% of images containing animals, with 94.5% of its species-level predictions being correct. ✨ Global Field Impact:  Over the last year, our research collaborators around the world have used the open-source model to process 11 million photos from the Serengeti in just days, track nocturnal behavioral shifts in the Colombian Amazon, and adapt the model to identify unique local species in Australia. SpeciesNet is part of Google Earth AI, a collection of geospatial tools, datasets and AI models for deep planetary intelligence. By providing these tools as open-source resources, we aim to foster a collaborative ecosystem where researchers can turn raw data into the scientific insights needed to monitor wild populations and protect our planet's biodiversity.     A single community-led patrol can be the turning point that saves a species from extinction while lifting an entire village out of poverty. Empowering people at the grassroots level creates powerful ripples far beyond the boundaries of any reserve or park. In Nepal, snow leopard scouts and local rangers patrol mountain trails, protecting rare wildlife and creating responsible tourism that transforms lives. In Belize, families living near the Community Baboon Sanctuary voluntarily protect the Yucatán black howler monkey, which has led not only to a booming monkey population but also to new income streams for the villages. Kenya’s Kamungi Conservancy and Namibia’s legal communal conservancies prove that when local people become stewards of their own lands, poaching drops, wildlife returns, and children see a future rooted in both tradition and innovation. Technology now puts real-time data and recognition in the hands of these guardians, fuelling fair reward systems and sparking even greater dedication. Long-term conservation works best when the community is at the heart of every decision and benefits flow directly to those who protect the land. These are not isolated victories but a clear signal that the world’s most effective conservation strategy starts with investing in people.     What if tiger landscapes were viewed not only as conservation priorities, but also as engines of resilient economic growth—with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at their heart? On #GlobalTigerDay, this year's theme, "Securing the Future of Tigers with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at the Heart," reminds us that thriving tiger populations depend on thriving communities. Across Asia, tiger landscapes secure watersheds, regulate climate, sustain agriculture, support tourism, and underpin the livelihoods of millions. For generations, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities have been the custodians of many of these landscapes, making their knowledge, stewardship, and well-being central to conservation success. As biodiversity finance gains momentum globally, the challenge is increasingly not the availability of capital, but the lack of investable models that connect ecological outcomes with community prosperity and long-term economic resilience. We need to think beyond protecting a species in isolation. By integrating biodiversity conservation with climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, nature-based enterprises, and innovative financing, tiger landscapes can become models of nature-positive economic systems. Working through international platforms such as the #IBCABigCats (International Big Cat Alliance), there is an opportunity to strengthen this vision—one where conservation, community leadership, and sustainable investment reinforce one another to deliver lasting benefits for both people and nature. The future of tiger conservation will be secured not only by protecting habitats, but by investing in the people who have long lived alongside them and by building resilient landscapes where nature and local economies thrive together.
