One plug. 11,000 tonnes less e-waste. That's what standardization can do. Often when I explain why standardization matters for circular economy and for the environment - I get the same look. A slight head tilt. A polite nod. The look of someone thinking: I'm not sure I follow where this is going. So let me use a few everyday examples instead. 📱 Phone chargers Every brand had its own plug. Every new phone, a new cable, a drawer full of incompatible adapters. The EU standardized on USB-C. Result: ~11,000 tonnes less e-waste per year, ~€250M saved annually. One port, solved. 🔋 Power tool batteries Still unresolved. DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee - each with its own battery, its own protocol. Break one tool, and a perfectly good battery becomes waste, because it fits nothing else. No technical reason. Just business models built on incompatibility. ☕ Coffee pods Also unresolved. Nespresso, Keurig, generic - every brand its own shape, its own lock-in. An estimated 576,000 tonnes of pod waste every year, and only a fraction of it ever gets recycled (if recyclable). Convenience by design. Waste by design too. The pattern is always the same: → Standardization enables interoperability and universality. It removes the particularisms that make products obsolete fast - and turn them into waste. Why? Because one need gets one answer. Not five competing, incompatible ones. When a product is the reference solution to a need - not one of many fragmented alternatives - its usefulness is maximized. ✅ That's when repairing, refurbishing, reusing it actually makes sense and circular business models are optimized. That's exactly what I advocate for through the PCDS (ISO 59040) in circular data. We need one universal, interoperable language to describe the circular properties of products across value chains. Only with that shared language can circular economy scale, go mainstream, and actually deliver for the environment.

The 10Rs in a Circular Economy 🌎 A circular economy isn’t just about recycling—it’s about rethinking how we design, use, and repurpose resources to keep materials in circulation for as long as possible. The 10R framework provides a structured approach to reducing waste and maximizing value at every stage of a product’s lifecycle. At the top of the hierarchy, Refuse (R1) and Rethink (R2) challenge the need for resource use in the first place. By eliminating unnecessary materials and shifting to smarter business models like product-as-a-service, companies can significantly reduce their environmental footprint. Reduce (R3) further minimizes raw material consumption, promoting efficiency in design and production. Keeping products in use for longer is key. Reuse (R4), Repair (R5), Refurbish (R6), and Remanufacture (R7) all extend the lifespan of goods, ensuring they remain functional and valuable rather than being discarded. Whether through resale platforms, repair programs, or remanufactured components, these strategies reduce demand for virgin resources and lower emissions. When direct reuse isn’t possible, Repurpose (R8) and Recycle (R9) come into play. Repurposing allows materials to find a second life in new applications, like repurposing EV batteries for energy storage. Recycling, while essential, is a lower-value strategy, as it requires energy and can degrade material quality. That’s why it should always come after higher-value pathways have been explored. Finally, Recover (R10) ensures that unavoidable waste is converted into useful by-products, such as biogas from organic waste. The further upstream we apply the 10Rs, the greater the impact—reducing waste, conserving resources, and creating a more sustainable economy. India’s New PET Bottle Rule: What’s Changing & Why Beverage Giants Are Pushing Back The Indian government has mandated that from April 1, 2025, beverage companies must use at least 30% recycled PET (rPET) in their plastic bottles. This requirement, part of India’s Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, aims to reduce plastic waste and boost domestic recycling. The mandate will increase annually, reaching 60% by 2028-29. 🔹 Why Is This Rule Important? Reduces dependency on virgin plastic. Encourages recycling infrastructure development. Supports India’s commitment to tackling plastic pollution. 🔹 Why Are Beverage Companies Opposing It? Major brands like Coca-Cola, Bisleri, and Parle Agro argue that meeting the deadline is unrealistic due to: 📉 Limited recycling capacity – Only five certified plants exist, covering just 15% of the industry’s demand for food-grade rPET. 💰 High costs – The shift could increase bottling expenses by 30%, with some of the burden passed to consumers. ⚠️ Risk of bottle shortages – The rule coincides with peak summer demand, straining supply chains. 🛠️ Quality concerns – Small brands might turn to uncertified recyclers, risking safety and compliance issues. 🔹 Industry’s Counter-Proposal Start with 10-15% rPET and increase gradually. Seek subsidies and tax breaks to expand recycling plants. 🔹 Government’s Response Officials say the industry had two years to prepare, and the deadline will not be extended. Every product goes through the same lifecycle. Most PMs only know how to operate in one stage. Stage 1: Discovery (0-1) Skills needed: Vision, risk-taking, speed What kills products: Over-planning, consensus-seeking Stage 2: Growth (1-10) Skills needed: Scaling, process, metrics What kills products: Chaos, inconsistency Stage 3: Optimization (10-100) Skills needed: Efficiency, incremental gains, data rigor What kills products: Innovation theater, too much change Stage 4: Reinvention (100+) Skills needed: Disrupting yourself before others do What kills products: Protecting the core business, risk aversion The problem: PMs are hired for one stage but the product evolves into another. The 0-1 PM who thrived on chaos becomes a liability at scale. The optimization PM who excels at efficiency kills innovation at 0-1. There’s no such thing as a "great PM." There are PMs who are great at specific stages. The rare skill: Knowing which stage the product is in and whether you're the right PM for it. Even rarer: Having the self-awareness to step aside when the product outgrows your skillset. The best PMs I know regularly audit their fit. There’s even an acronym to remember the types of waste we aim to reduce: DOWNTIME. This includes Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-utilized Talent, Transportation, Inventory, Motion, and Excessive Processing. Imagine a team working on Excel spreadsheets. It’s not a factory floor, but you can still spot these types of waste. Mistyped figures (Defects), multiple team members doing the same task (Overproduction), or waiting for spreadsheet permissions to update (Waiting) are small but impactful examples of waste that add up over time. Studies suggest that reducing these inefficiencies could improve productivity by up to 30%, translating directly to cost savings and better outcomes. The founder of Toyota once said, "Every defect is a treasure if the company can uncover its cause and then work to prevent it." Each small fix we make is more than just tidying up it’s a step towards a more agile, efficient team. 4 months into my first sustainability job, and I can't believe more companies aren't doing life cycle analysis. I regularly analyse products from start to finish - raw materials, manufacturing, transport, use, and disposal. The insights are eye-opening. Here's what I've learned: Life cycle analysis reveals hidden environmental impacts that companies frequently miss. It can identify cost-saving opportunities and carbon emission hotspots that often go unnoticed. It helps create better products that customers actually want! On the surface, the process isn't complicated: 1. Collect data from supplier/manufacturer 2. Input materials, processes and waste management 3. Analyse and understand impact categories 4. Find improvement opportunities 5. Implement changes Small changes make big differences. One of our recent projects reduced water usage by over 90% AND decreased CO2 by over 50% just by changing the material (yes, I couldn’t believe it either). Don't wait for regulations to force your hand. Start analysing your products now. The data is there, the methods are proven, and the benefits are clear.

France finally publishes its long-awaited law on recycled plastics in packaging After months of expectation, the arrêté of 5 September 2025 is here - and it changes the game for producers placing packaging on the French market (effective 1 January 2026). 🔹 Bonuses (per tonne of recycled plastic used): - €450/t if recyclate comes from another EPR stream - €550/t if from the same stream - €1,000/t for hard-to-recycle resins reintroduced into food-contact sensitive packaging 🔹 Minimum incorporation rates for beverage bottles: - PET (clear, coloured, opaque): 25% by end 2029 → 30% from 2030 - HDPE: 0% until 2029 → 30% from 2030 🔹 Localisation rule: To qualify, all steps (collection, sorting, recycling, incorporation) must take place within 1,500 km of France’s geographic centre, or in the EU / countries with equivalent standards. 👉 This clearly covers neighbours like Belgium, Spain, Italy or Germany. Even Ireland and southern Sweden fall within the circle, while parts of Poland or northern Greece are only partially covered. Beyond that, countries such as the Baltics or Cyprus are excluded. 🔹 Exclusions & penalties: - No bonus for PVC recyclate in packaging - No bonus if recycling process yields <50% - Penalties for products containing substances that disrupt recycling 👉 This long-awaited framework aims to secure local, traceable, and high-quality recycling loops, while penalising practices that hinder recyclability. It’s a clear signal: France is raising the bar on packaging circularity and pushing producers to go further, faster.
