    For years, STEM has been at the heart of Indian education. And rightly so, as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math have prepared our students for innovation, global careers, and future-ready skills. But here is the question I have been reflecting on: Is that table missing a chair? The answer lies in STEAM, bringing the Arts into STEM, not as an add-on, but as an anchor. Because innovation is not just about logic, it is also about imagination. It is not just about solving problems, but also seeing the world in new ways. In today’s world, children are surrounded by noise, speed, and constant change. More than ever, they need the ability to pause, to notice beauty, to appreciate good design, to balance mind and heart. That is what the Arts bring, a sense of aesthetics, empathy, and perspective that complements technical learning. This is why the NEP’s emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach is so timely. It reminds us that education cannot stop at coding or calculus. It must also nurture creativity, storytelling, and the aesthetic sense that helps children connect with themselves and the world around them. STEM gives us builders. STEAM gives us balanced builders who can code and care, calculate and create, design and dream. If we want a generation ready for the future, then creativity must have a seat at the table. #Education #STEAM #Creativity

    A 9-year-old was repeatedly reprimanded for doodling in class. Later, the same “distraction” became his strength—he was hired to design a restaurant wall. This isn’t just a feel-good story. It reflects what research in education and cognitive science has been telling us for years: 🔹 Studies (Harvard, University of Plymouth) show that doodling can improve focus, memory retention, and information processing. 🔹 Visual thinking activates different neural pathways, often enhancing creativity and problem-solving ability. 🔹 Standard classroom structures sometimes misinterpret divergent thinking as lack of discipline. The real question is: 👉 Are we suppressing potential by forcing uniformity? A learning environment should not only reward compliance but also recognize different forms of intelligence: • Visual thinkers • Creative disruptors • Non-linear problem solvers Because today’s “distraction” may be tomorrow’s innovation. As educators, leaders, and professionals, the responsibility is clear: Create environments where curiosity is guided—not punished. Talent doesn’t always look like attention.     We’ve been learning through visual storytelling since the dawn of time. From cave walls to classroom whiteboards, stories, especially visual ones, stick with us. They engage, explain, and invite us to think in ways plain text often can’t. For us in education, visual storytelling is a powerful method for simplifying complex ideas, capturing attention, and making learning memorable. That’s where comic strips come in. And no, comic strips aren’t just for language arts or art class. You can actually use them across disciplines, from exploring scientific processes to unpacking historical events, building vocabulary, teaching social-emotional skills, or sparking creative writing. When it comes to comic strip creation, there are tools that have been around for years (like MakeBeliefsComix, Pixton, and StoryboardThat) and I’ve been recommending these to teachers for as long as I can remember. They’re reliable, classroom-friendly, and easy to use. But now we also have a wave of AI-powered tools entering the scene. The new image generator in ChatGPT, for example, does an incredible job creating comic-style visuals from short prompts. Or, you can use the magic combo Canva+ ChatGPT. For instance, generate your comic script with ChatGPT, then jump into Canva, choose a comic strip template, drop in your scenes and dialogue, and you’re done. The possibilities now are more flexible and more accessible than ever.     Some of the most powerful classrooms are not filled with expensive technology. They are filled with teachers who refuse to let imagination retire. A teacher carefully designed the human body using layers of cardboard. As each layer was lifted, learners discovered something new. First, the human body. Then the digestive system. Next, the internal organs. Then the skeleton. Finally, the brain and its amazing functions. There were no special effects. No animations. Just creativity, patience, and purpose. The beautiful part was not the cardboard. It was the curiosity it created. Learners leaned closer. They asked more questions. They wanted to touch, observe, and understand. Suddenly, science was no longer a page in a textbook. It became an experience they could see with their own eyes. This is the kind of instructional design our classrooms need. Digital tools are valuable and should be embraced. Yet there is something unforgettable about creating learning materials with our own hands. It reminds learners that creativity is not reserved for machines or software. Human minds can imagine, build, experiment, and inspire. Every teacher is an instructional designer. Every classroom is a creative studio waiting to come alive. To school owners, parents, policymakers, and education stakeholders, let us invest not only in technology but also in the creative capacity of our teachers. When teachers create engaging learning experiences, students do not simply memorize lessons. They remember them.     Empowering Classrooms with AI: Infographics & Comic Strips for Engaged Learning  Following ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities and inspiration from Murtaza Sinnarwala’s post https://lnkd.in/eeceJKPK I decided to explore how educators can integrate infographics and comic strips into their teaching strategies to enhance learning experiences. I started by using a knowledge organiser aimed at parents and prompted ChatGPT with: "Create an infographic for students aged 8-10 years old about the Titanic. Include images for key vocabulary, a timeline of events, two key figures, and any children's books linked to the Titanic." The result? A visually engaging infographic tailored for young learners! It included colourful visuals and simplified information to captivate students' attention. Next, I took it further: "Using all this information, create a comic strip of 10 images for the timeline of events for the Titanic." The comic strip brought history to life, showcasing major events through storytelling and visuals—perfect for visual learners and fostering creativity in the classroom! Why Infographics & Comics Work in Education: Infographics: Simplify complex topics into digestible visuals. Enhance knowledge retention through charts, timelines, and images. Cater to diverse learning styles—especially visual learners. Comics: Engage students with relatable narratives and illustrations. Promote creativity and critical thinking through storytelling. Help reluctant readers connect with educational content in a fun way. How Teachers Can Use These Tools: 1️⃣ Create infographics to explain processes, timelines, or comparisons. 2️⃣ Use comic strips to narrate historical events or visualize scientific concepts. 3️⃣ Encourage students to create their own comics or infographics as interactive projects. With tools like ChatGPT, Canva, or specialised platforms educators can easily craft these materials without advanced design skills.     A strong STEM and Arts program is so much more than a single class period, it becomes the creative heartbeat of an entire school. Today alone, students came to me with an incredible variety of needs: “I need a miniature Lincoln Memorial.”“Do you have paint pens?”“Can I borrow a glue gun and glue sticks for social studies?”“Can you use the laser printer to  cut out dinosaurs for a roller coaster in science?”“Do you have paint and brushes?” I need  Poster Board, do you have any? “My shoe fell apart, do you have glue?” Can you fix my glasses? And this was all before considering the engineering projects, prototypes, and creative builds already happening in my STEM classroom. When schools invest in STEM and the Arts, they are investing in problem solvers, creators, and innovators. These programs provide students with the tools, materials, and support to turn ideas into reality, whether they are building historical models, designing science experiments, creating artwork, or simply fixing something that broke. Innovation does not happen in isolation. It requires spaces where students can imagine, design, create, test, revise, and try again. Healthy STEM and Arts programs become shared resources for the entire school community.     At our latest The Museum of Modern Art Adventure guide testing, we tried something simple: We asked kids to look at art through the artist’s eyes. In front of Monet, that meant not just asking: “What do you see?” But: “What colors would you choose?” “What would you repeat?” “What would your own water lilies look like?” And then they got to sketch, paint, observe, and take photos. Here’s what surprised me most: The kids basically set up shop for 30 minutes in front of the painting — looking, drawing, comparing, asking questions, taking photos, and making meaning. And not once were we shushed. Not once were we made to feel like we were in the way. Not once were we asked to move along. That matters. Because research keeps showing that when learning is reinforced with an activity — when children are asked to do something with what they are seeing — the impact is deeper. They are not just passively receiving information. They are applying it, interpreting it, and making it their own. And honestly, MoMA gave us the space to do exactly that. This is what museum learning can become: Not a worksheet to keep kids busy. Not a scavenger hunt to rush them through galleries. Not “be quiet and look.” But an invitation to enter the artist’s process. Sometimes that starts with a clipboard, a crayon, and a kid in a Monet beard trying to see the world like Monet did. This is why we test our guides with real kids, in real museums, in real moments. Because the goal isn’t just to visit the museum.     Messy, child-led painting will always win over pre-cut crafts and adult-led projects. Crafts may look cute for the bulletin board, but messy art gives children the kind of full-body, full-brain experience they actually want and need. With paint and paper, children are using their senses, building motor skills, experimenting with color and texture, strengthening focus and attention, and exercising the kind of cognitive skills that grow through problem-solving and discovery. Yes, it is messy... as it should be. Parents, if you are sending your child to preschool, expect paint on sleeves and smudges on hands. If you love it, leave it at home. A messy child is a sign of deep learning, not a lack of order. Teachers, your classroom should be messy. It is their lab, a space for testing ideas, taking risks, and learning through real, hands-on experiences. Instead of spending hours cutting shapes or curating adult-directed crafts, time can be used in a more meaningful way. Set out paint and paper in seconds, allow children to explore in their own way, and be present and supportive while they explore. When you join children in the joy of messy, child-led play (with paint - or any other medium), you build stronger relationships. You show them that their ideas and curiosities matter more than perfect products. Instead of directing and correcting, you are sharing in discovery, which strengthens trust and opens the door for more cooperation later. Messy, child-led painting is not just art, it is brain building, relationship building, and joy rolled into one. 🎨❤
