Stop designing waste rooms for people who don’t exist. A lot of waste rooms are built for a fantasy resident. The one who reads every sign. Flattens every box. Rinses every container. Knows all the municipal rules by heart. Uses the right lid every time. Walks the extra distance to do the right thing. Never gets tired, rushed, distracted, or confused. Never has groceries in one hand and a child pulling the other. Never just wants to drop something off and get back upstairs. That person would be amazing. But that is not the person most buildings are actually dealing with. Most residents are not trying to make a mess. They are trying to finish a task. They walk into the waste room with limited time, limited attention, and one simple goal: drop this off and move on. That does not make them careless. It makes them human. This is where a lot of waste rooms break down. They rely too much on perfect behaviour. More signs. More reminders. More rules. More labels. More instructions. And then the same problems keep showing up. Cardboard stacked beside the bin. Recycling in the garbage. Garbage in the recycling. Organics ignored. Overflow piled in the easiest corner. At some point, the room has to stop assuming people will make the ideal choice just because the rule exists. A better waste room starts with a more honest assumption: people usually choose what is easiest, closest, clearest, and most obvious. So the system has to do more of the work. Put the right bin where the behaviour actually happens. Make the label visible before the lid is opened. Make cardboard disposal obvious. Reduce choices where choices create confusion. Separate streams clearly. Remove the small frictions that make the wrong action feel easier. That is not lowering the standard. That is designing for real life. The best waste systems do not need perfect residents. They help normal residents make better choices with less effort. And in most buildings, that is exactly where improvement starts. Three Bins Failed. Why Are We Adding More? Design for Behaviour — Not for Brochures. We still cannot implement a basic 3-bin system properly. In a majority of homes, waste is dumped into a single poly bag. That bag is either thrown into a community bin or handed over unsegregated. No sorting. No discipline. No accountability. Yet we keep talking about adding more categories, more colors, more streams.This is not progress. It’s policy overreach. If citizens haven’t adapted to three streams, increasing complexity will only increase contamination and reduce recovery rates. Instead of leapfrogging, we need simplification. Here is a realistic, scalable model: 1. Two Household Waste Streams Only • Organic (wet waste) • Recyclables (dry waste) That’s it. 2. Sanitary Waste • Handed over separately in clearly marked bags. • Not mixed into dry waste. • Not dumped into organic. 3. Collection Reform • Organic waste: Collected every 2nd day. • Recyclables: Collected every 4th day. • Never collected together. Why separate collection days? Because the moment wet and dry are transported together, contamination starts. Once recyclables are contaminated, their value drops. Informal recyclers reject them. They end up in landfill. Segregation fails not because people are incapable. It fails because systems are impractical. In high-density, behaviorally inconsistent environments, complex systems collapse. Simple systems scale. We don’t need more bins. We need fewer rules — clearly communicated and strictly enforced. If India wants real landfill diversion and higher recycling efficiency, the starting point is clarity, not complexity. Design systems for behavior. In Norway, many public trash bins have special holders on the outside called binners, specifically designed for bottles and cans. These holders help people, including those who are poor or homeless, to easily collect recyclable items without having to dig through the main trash bins. This system exists because Norway has a deposit return program where people receive a small refund for returning bottles and cans for recycling. The purpose of these holders is to encourage recycling by providing an easy and respectful way for individuals to gather these items. Instead of searching through garbage, people can simply take bottles and cans from the holders, which helps maintain their dignity. This approach also helps keep the streets cleaner, as it motivates more people to pick up litter, reducing trash left in public spaces. Overall, the binner system is a practical solution that benefits the entire community. It supports environmental efforts by increasing recycling rates and helps people who rely on collecting recyclables for extra income. By making it easier and more respectful to collect bottles and cans, Norway promotes both social welfare and sustainability in its cities.

In 2021 the Dutch government rolled out a deposit-return scheme (statiegeld in Dutch) for small bottles, followed up by a similar programme for cans in 2023. It’s a significant step towards reducing waste and enhancing recycling opportunities. A study in Denmark showed that after implementing a deposit-return scheme, the presence of bottles and cans in residual waste (which is usually burned rather than recycled) decreased by 70-90%. However, the policy has had an unexpected consequence: a surge in damaged public bins, as people forcibly open them to retrieve bottles and cans. I recently discovered a straightforward solution – a metal rack placed on top of the bins, where bottles can be deposited. Here’s why I really like this: 🚮 Ease of access: The metal racks make it easy for people to deposit bottles and cans without having to dig through trash bins, reducing the likelihood of litter as well as the risk of bins being broken. 🚮 Encourages recycling: The visible placement of the racks serves as a constant reminder to recycle, increasing the overall effectiveness of the deposit-return scheme. 🚮 And my favourite reason: It’s an easy fix to a policy side-effect. The metal racks provide a simple and cost-effective solution to an unforeseen problem, addressing the issue of damaged bins without requiring major changes to the existing policy. 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗜𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. Two photos. Two cities. One important lesson. 🇫🇮 𝗝𝘆𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘆𝗹𝗮, 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 Every neighborhood has separate bins for different waste streams—bio waste, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, mixed waste, and more. Even homes typically separate bio waste from other household waste. The system makes the right choice the easiest choice. 🇮🇳 𝗕𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗵, 𝗚𝘂𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁 We have excellent awareness campaigns and informative hoardings explaining how waste should be segregated. But in many locations, finding separate public bins itself is difficult. People cannot segregate waste if the infrastructure doesn't exist. Waste management succeeds only when 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. We often discuss advanced technologies like biomethanation, waste-to-energy, and circular economy. But the foundation is much simpler: ✅ Make segregation easy. ✅ Place colour-coded bins where people actually need them. ✅ Ensure separate collection and transportation. ✅ Build habits through consistency, not just campaigns. As someone working in the biogas sector, I see this every day. High-quality source segregation is the first step towards producing quality compost, biogas, biomethane, and recyclable materials. Without it, even the best processing technologies struggle. India has the knowledge, the policies, and the ambition. Now we need the infrastructure to match. Five metres. That's the distance between a general waste bin and a cardboard recycling bin at a site I visited recently. The cardboard bin was empty. The general waste bin was full of cardboard boxes. It's not the waste contractor's fault. The infrastructure was there. The signage was there. The recycling bin was right there. But people didn't use it. This is one of the most persistent challenges in resource recovery and it doesn't get solved by better infrastructure alone. Behaviour and convenience drive outcomes more than most people want to admit. When recycling requires even a small extra step five metres, a different bin, a moment of thought a significant portion of people won't take it. The solutions that work tend to focus on: * Making the right thing the easy thing * Placement and flow, not just availability Consistent, simple messaging that doesn't require people to think too hard Education matters. But design matters more. If your facility is set up so that doing the right thing is the path of least resistance you will get better outcomes without having to change anyone's mind. I spotted this recycling bin while traveling recently and found myself stopping to take a picture. Why? Because it did something many recycling programs still struggle with: it made the rules clear. Instead of simply telling residents to recycle more, Scottsdale provided 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about packaging, recyclability, and EPR, it's a good reminder that consumers can't make the right decision if they don't have clear information. We often talk about recyclability from the perspective of packaging design, material selection, and infrastructure. But consumer understanding is an important part of the equation, too. The easier we make it for people to know what goes where, the better chance we have of reducing contamination and improving outcomes for everyone involved in the recycling system. 🟢 Want to design recycling/waste sorting that actually works? For the past 2 years we have been working with the EU Commission on developing the new harmonized waste sorting labels that will launch in August 2026. Here are 3 of the most important behavior design principles you must know to make waste sorting intuitive, consistent, and effective. In our work with cities, retailers, and public spaces, we often see the same myths about waste sorting: • That written information is enough. • That citizens will scan QR codes to read about recycling/waste sorting. • That recycling is a matter of motivation and mindset, not design. In reality, recycling and waste sorting is often not of high interest to most people. It happens fast — often while people are distracted and busy doing other things. Recycling and waste sorting is not about having the right education or motivation — it’s about designing surroundings where doing the right thing happens naturally. So what really works? Here are 3 key nudging principles to make recycling and waste sorting easy 👇 ✅ Visual Guides ↳ We are visual creatures first and foremost. When bin labels rely only on text like “Landfill” or “Waste,” users must stop, read, and decide. That takes mental energy — and since our brains are wired to conserve it, we often end up tossing everything into the waste bin. But when visual cues — colors, symbols, and icons — are used to guide behavior, sorting waste becomes intuitive. Visual guidance transforms a cognitive task into an automatic action. ✅ Matching ↳ Color matching reduces friction. To make waste sorting easy, labels on product packaging must match the labels on household bins. When shapes, colors, and symbols align, people don’t have to think — they just act. Every mismatch between packaging and bin design creates hesitation — and hesitation leads to contamination. ✅ Availability ↳Availability drives action. People rarely go out of their way to find extra bins for recycling or sorting waste into different streams. If only one bin is available — for example, in a private household — we’ll throw everything into that one, regardless of our good intentions. But when the number of bins matches the number of waste streams, sorting and recycling become the easy choice. Having the right number of bins available is what kick-starts real recycling behavior — at home and across society. ✨ In short: Effective recycling and waste sorting does not mean we have to launch new expensive awareness campaigns — it means that we have to introduce visually, consistent, and available design cues that make the right choice (at home, in schools, at the workplace etc) the easy and obvious one. 👉 Want more insights from our work on behavior change, flow, and wayfinding? It’s the kind of smart public infrastructure that encourages real behavioural change. 👏 The Trafford Centre is making sustainability accessible through thoughtful and user-friendly design. These bins aren’t just present—they're placed where people naturally need them. Small touches like this make a big impact.
