Pentagon Kills 14 Priorities. Births 6 Technologies That Actually Matter. November 17, 2025. Under Secretary Emil Michael just torched the previous scattered R&D wishlist. "Fourteen priorities means no priorities at all," he declared, condensing $140 billion in annual research into six Critical Technology Areas that deliver battlefield dominance in 36 months or less. The old Pentagon spread resources like peanut butter... thin, everywhere, ineffective. The new Pentagon concentrates firepower like a shaped charge, focused, penetrating, devastating. Here's what survives the cut. • 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗜: The nervous system. AI embedded in every weapon, sensor, decision loop. Machines process terabytes while humans process tactics. China's cognitive warfare meets American algorithmic supremacy. • 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Supply chain killer. Bacteria producing graphene. Microbes synthesizing fuel. Forward bases printing parts from engineered organisms. Nature becomes our factory floor. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: Sustainment revolution. Autonomous drones threading through jamming. Predictive algorithms preventing shortages before they exist. Ukraine taught us convoys die. This ensures they evolve. • 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺-𝗕𝗜𝗗: Electromagnetic dominance. GPS jammed? Quantum sensors navigate anyway. Communications compromised? Quantum encryption locks them down. We own the spectrum again. • 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: Unlimited magazines. Lasers costing pennies per shot. Microwaves frying drone swarms. No resupply needed, just generators and cooling. Physics becomes ammunition. • 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀: Time compression. Mach 5+ weapons arriving before decisions complete. Production scaling from dozens to thousands. Unit costs dropping 90%. Speed becomes strategy. Michael's mandate rewrites acquisition physics. Rapid sprints replace eternal programs. Cross-pollination becomes mandatory. AI guides hypersonics, quantum sensors enable logistics, and bio-materials strengthen directed energy. Six technologies are converging into an integrated warfighting ecosystem. For contractors, the signal blazes clear. Those 14 scattered opportunities just became six focused mandates. Does your quantum research? Better integrate with battlefield networks. Does your AI platform? Show combat results in months, not years. Does your bio startup? Demonstrate military materials yesterday. The Pentagon just ran triage on military tech. Six technologies live. Everything else gets life support, at best. ---------- Like this content? Legal operations for in-house teams | Former GC & Legal COO helping GCs optimise their legal function | Founder, Melius

Stop overcomplicating Legal Operations. Had a conversation yesterday with a Head of Legal at a 200-person company. She was convinced she needed enterprise-grade contract management software, AI-powered analytics, and a dedicated Legal Ops hire. Her annual legal spend? £150k. Her team? Two lawyers and a paralegal. This is what I call the sophistication fallacy. We've been sold this myth that effective Legal Operations requires complex technology and dedicated specialists. Nonsense. The most impactful Legal Ops transformations I've seen in smaller teams started with a notepad and some brutal honesty. One sole counsel increased her strategic impact by simply mapping where her time actually went. Turned out 25% was spent on work that didn't require her to be involved. Another small team revolutionised their stakeholder relationships with a one-page guide explaining when to involve legal and when not to. No software. No consultants. Just clear thinking and the courage to say no to low-value work. Legal Operations isn't about having the fanciest tools. It's about having the clearest priorities. Save the enterprise solutions for when you've mastered the fundamentals. What's one simple change your legal team could make tomorrow that would free up capacity for strategic work? #legaloperations #inhouselegal #legalleadership #generalcounsel #smallteams

The digital battlefield is now the frontline for kinetic conflict. As geopolitical tensions escalate in the Middle East, our latest Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 Threat Brief highlights a significant surge in Iranian state-aligned cyber activity that every global leader should have on their radar. Cyber operations are Iran’s primary asymmetric weapon. Based on our latest intelligence, here are the three most critical takeaways for your defense & operational resilience strategy: 1️⃣ Weaponized Identity is the Primary Entry Point: Iranian actors continue to move away from complex malware and toward logging in. By using social engineering and exploiting federated identity systems, they are bypassing traditional perimeters to move laterally across your network undetected. 2️⃣ Retaliatory Wipers: We are seeing a shift from stealthy espionage to aggressive, disruptive tactics. This includes the use of wiper malware designed to permanently destroy data and paralyze critical infrastructure, often masquerading as hacktivist activity to provide plausible deniability. 3️⃣ AI Accelerated Reconnaissance: Threat actors are now using Generative AI to map regional infrastructure and identify vulnerabilities in minutes, not days. This compressed attack lifecycle means your detection and response must now operate at machine speed. To outpace these threats, leadership must prioritize three proactive shifts: 1️⃣ Move to Phishing-Resistant MFA: Standard MFA is no longer enough to stop sophisticated identity based attacks.  Prioritize hardware based authenticators for high value roles to neutralize the log in threat. 2️⃣ Implement Just-in-Time Admin Rights: Eliminate standing administrative privileges. By moving to a model where access is granted only when needed and for a limited time, you drastically reduce the blast radius of a compromised account. 3️⃣ Automate External Patching: With AI-accelerated recon, the window to exploit a new vulnerability has shrunk to hours. Organizations must mandate automated patching for all internet facing assets to close the gap before the adversary can find it. At Palo Alto Networks, we are committed to protecting our clients worldwide by turning this intelligence into action. Link to the full Unit 42 analysis in comments below.

Data Centre demand is surging, but the next competitive advantage isn’t more square meters — it’s smarter optimization. Would you agree? For CEOs and CIOs navigating AI scale-up, the question has shifted from “How do we expand?” to “How do we maximize what we already have?” Today’s high-density, AI-driven workloads are exposing the limits of legacy infrastructure. Organizations that modernize their compute layer are seeing immediate gains in performance, sustainability, and cost. Why this matters for CEOs & CIOs • Rising energy costs and emissions targets demand a shift from expansion to efficiency. • Optimized infrastructure unlocks new capacity for AI, analytics, and digital services without major capex. • Modern compute architectures deliver compounding benefits across performance, cost reduction, and ESG reporting. AMD’s impact on strategic optimization • Providers upgrading to AMD EPYC 4th & 5th Gen servers have run the same workloads with up to 60% fewer servers, while delivering 30% higher performance and nearly 50% lower total cost of ownership. • AMD’s architecture roadmap has delivered a 38× improvement in AI/HPC node energy efficiency in just five years, equating to up to 97% energy savings for equivalent compute tasks. • This frees capacity for CIOs to deploy new AI services while staying within strict power and space envelopes — a win for both growth and sustainability. Strategic takeaway For leaders, data centre optimization is no longer an engineering decision — it’s a business growth decision. Smarter compute enables faster AI adoption, leaner operations, and future-proof scalability. Companies that optimize today will innovate faster tomorrow. I’ve sat in boardrooms where every second counts—and legal’s voice is often the last one in the room and the first one people want to rush past. But here’s the hack: if you frame legal insights like a strategist, not just a guardian, you don’t get tuned out—you lead. Here are three phrases that instantly upgrade your legal POV from blocker to board-level strategist: 1️⃣ “The tradeoff we’re managing is...” Executives don't want red flags—they want decision-making clarity. This phrase reframes your input as a business tension, not a veto. It signals you understand the levers and are helping manage risk vs. speed, cost vs. coverage, scale vs. compliance. Use it when: navigating IP risk in an AI deployment or debating indemnity in vendor deals. 2️⃣ “This gives us optionality if…” Nothing earns strategic credibility faster than showing you’re designing for the future. This line conveys foresight and flexibility—whether it's preserving data rights or building in audit mechanisms, it shows you’re not just mitigating risk, you’re enabling future action. Use it when: structuring contracts, building out AI governance, or advising on cross-border expansions. 3️⃣ “What this unlocks is…” Legal doesn’t just prevent bad outcomes—it enables better ones. This phrase turns legal guidance into a value amplifier. You’re not saying no. You’re revealing what’s possible. And yes, board members notice. Use it when: proposing process changes, approving a licensing model, or greenlighting external disclosures. Why me? Because I’ve been in the trenches of AI vendor contracts, life-altering sale deals, defining milestone decisions, startup pivots, global expansions, high-profile regulatory investigations—and I’ve seen how legal’s language can make or break influence. I’m not sharing theory. I’m sharing tactics I’ve used—in real rooms, with real stakes. Want to go deeper? Stanford’s latest take on Navigating AI Vendor Contracts and the Future of Law is worth a read. It lays out why legal voice is evolving—and how contracts are the new code of strategy. https://lnkd.in/gpSMyg9t Here’s the insight: Lawyers who frame risk as decision, optionality, and unlocks—get remembered, respected, and re-invited. So: Which of these phrases will you try in your next meeting? Or better yet—what’s your power phrase that wins the room? Drop it in the comments. Let’s build a strategic legal toolkit—together. -------- 🚀 Olga V. Making Legal Tech Make Sense: From Code to Culture | Legal AI & Transformation | India Qualified Attorney

How is digital transformation reshaping the future of law firms? As part of the Tech-Driven Change, Innovation, Profession, and the Future of User Access course I’m running at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), we had the opportunity to hear from Rohit Shukla, Chief Digital Officer at Khaitan & Co, one of India’s leading law firms. The conversation made one thing very clear: Transformation isn’t just about adopting tools — it’s about rethinking how legal work itself is structured, delivered, and valued. 🔹 The traditional pyramid is evolving into a "rocket" model. As AI automates tasks like drafting and document review, firms are rebalancing their structures. The future legal workforce will have fewer juniors focused on repetitive work, and more domain specialists, strategic advisors, and tech-fluent client partners. 🔹 Training is shifting from static onboarding to agile, AI-driven learning. Bite-sized, on-demand training ecosystems are replacing one-time software workshops. New joiners are expected to navigate tech-augmented workflows as a core part of legal practice — not an optional skillset. 🔹 Custom solutions are driving more meaningful AI adoption. Rather than relying solely on off-the-shelf GenAI tools, some firms are developing internal platforms embedded directly into workflows — making adoption faster, easier, and more intuitive. The emerging reality: legal expertise remains essential, but alone is not enough. 🔹Data literacy, technological agility, and domain insight are fast becoming critical to future-ready legal careers. The real question: Are we preparing not just our systems, but also our people, for what’s next? #DigitalTransformation #LegalInnovation #FutureOfWork #LegalTech

"Neutralizing U.S. theater airpower has, therefore, become a central focus for Chinese military planners. Beijing’s solution: Target U.S. aircraft on the ground. China has deployed both a wide range of sensors to determine which airfields the USAF is using during a war and hundreds of conventional missiles to strike those bases." 'Access Denied? The Sino-American Contest for Military Primacy in Asia' paints a concerning picture of how China’s precision-strike capabilities increasingly threaten US airpower projection, particularly in scenarios involving Taiwan. Harvard's Belfer Center International Security Journal examines the evolving US-China military balance in East Asia, with three key findings: Current US Air Power Strategy Is Unsustainable China’s missile capabilities can effectively target and disable US airbases across East Asia, regardless of their location or dispersion. In all modelled scenarios, the US Air Force suffers significant aircraft losses on the ground - between 200 and 400 - making sustained air operations infeasible. Agile Combat Employment (ACE) Is Operationally and Strategically Risky The ACE doctrine, which involves shifting aircraft between multiple bases to complicate targeting, fails to reduce losses meaningfully. It also introduces escalatory pressure, as its effectiveness depends on degrading China’s ISR and command & control capabilities early in a conflict or crisis. Base Hardening Offers a More Viable Alternative Investing in hardened aircraft shelters, along with improved jamming and missile defenses, can significantly reduce aircraft losses and mitigate escalation risks. This approach enhances survivability without requiring immediate offensive action against Chinese ISR assets. Integrating these operational realities into exercise and training frameworks will be key to ensuring readiness and relevance. Build the Kitchen Right, and Everything Flows. “Your kitchen doesn’t just make food, it sets the pace. When the make line breaks, so is the service.” In QSR, the problems don’t start when a customer gets frustrated. They start earlier, when your kitchen can’t keep pace. I’ve seen it at every level. Teams working flat out, FOH keeping smiles up, but the make line behind them is struggling just to stay ahead. And it’s rarely about effort. It’s about how we build the system around them. ⸻ Think of your kitchen like a relay race: Every team member has a clear lane. Every handoff is clean. No one is running backwards or crossing over. When the make line flows this way without interruption, you feel the difference across the board. ⸻ Here’s what solid kitchen operations do: ➡️ Make-line Prep stations, assembly, and packing, all in one forward direction. No crossing over. ➡️ Smart screens Live, accurate prep screens. No lost tickets. ➡️ Clear roles Prep is prep. Assembly is assembly. Packing is packing. When everyone owns their space. ➡️ Tech Good systems don’t just print tickets. They set the tone. They make the team proactive rather than reactive. ⸻ Is your kitchen helping your team move smarter or just making them work harder? — P.S. Helping lawyers turn legal expertise into business impact |Professor at University of Chicago Law School|Best-Selling author

Most CEOs replace the General Counsel when Legal becomes a bottleneck. This CEO didn’t replace anyone. She transformed her entire Legal function without changing a single lawyer. When we first spoke, she was direct: “Legal is slowing the business down. Sales avoids them. Deals stall. We’re missing targets because contracts take 45 days.” I met with the GC. The GC wasn’t the problem. He was capable, ethical, and committed — just operating in a system built for caution, not for growth. Instead of “fixing Legal” by restructuring, I advised the CEO to do something far more effective: Reframe how she led Legal. Shift the mission from “protect the company” to “accelerate revenue safely.” Together, we implemented business discipline: • Established clear KPIs: cycle time, risk reduction, customer satisfaction, outside counsel ROI • Deployed technology: CLM + automated approvals • Created dashboards reviewed with finance and operations • Recognized Legal wins — faster deals, cleaner audits, fewer disputes Six months later: Contract cycle reduced from 45 days to 18 days Legal spend down 15% Revenue up 22% Reputation score for Legal up 60 points No personnel changes. No mass rewrites of policy. Just leadership clarity, aligned incentives, and operational rigor. Because the CEO’s job isn’t to know the law — it’s to lead the executive who helps the company win safely. Today’s top GCs don’t simply manage risk. They integrate strategy, regulation, and foresight into how the company operates. And when CEOs lead Legal with the same expectations they apply to Finance, HR, or Operations? Deals move faster. Risk becomes manageable. Trust increases. The culture strengthens. Legal stops being a cost center — and becomes a competitive advantage.
