    𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝟳𝟰% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟵𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹. 𝗪𝗵𝘆? 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. When I stepped in as CTO, it was clear that if our transformation was going to succeed, we had to improve execution. So, instead of chasing shiny tools or trendy models, we relentlessly focused on the basics. 🧱 Here’s my advice for anyone on this journey: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 Standardization doesn’t limit creativity — it removes roadblocks. Certified pipelines, test plans, and frameworks eliminate chaos, helping teams deliver faster. 2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 You need rules, but only enforce the “no-regret” ones. This gives teams the flexibility to innovate solutions for different regions or customers. 3️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 Take it step by step and front-load complexity. Doing everything in parallel or saving the hardest for last will result in gridlock and deflating surprises. 4️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 Tech teams know a lot, but the business knows best. Demand clear requirements so you can build what's needed... and not bridges to nowhere. 5️⃣ 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 They’re called ‘digital transformations,’ but they’re really business transformations. Everyone — not just tech — must own it. There's always more to do, but we’ve made huge strides this year:   ✅ Cut over four 40+ year-old mainframes to the cloud ✅ Migrated all North American mainframe pipelines to data fabric ✅ Closed data centers from Alpharetta to Australia ✅ Beat our all-time stability records ✅ Achieved our best-ever tech hygiene stats 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀? We won’t be in the 95%.   • WHOOP just hired doctors. The wearable industry quietly split in two this week. Most people saw a feature update. This is different, it's (i think) a category shift. I've worn a WHOOP daily for years. It's the data my mornings run on. So when WHOOP confirmed on May 8 that live video consultations with licensed clinicians are coming to the app this summer (in US only so far), my first thought wasn't "cool feature." It was: this changes what wearables are for. The rollout includes on-demand consultations informed by months of your continuous biometrics, bloodwork, and medical history. EHR integration via HealthEx syncs diagnoses, medications, and procedures directly into coaching. Two AI upgrades land alongside it: "My Memory" lets you shape the AI's context, and "Proactive Check-Ins" surface advice at the right moment, like prioritizing sleep before a key event. The Journal is also redesigned so you can log supplements and behaviors by voice, with Behavior Trends showing how each habit actually shifts your recovery. Now look at the timing. The day before, Google launched a $99 Fitbit Air with a $9.99 per month Gemini AI health coach. Two bets on the future of wearable health, 24 hours apart. AI tells you what your body is doing. A clinician tells you what to do about it. Legally, AI cannot do the second part. Yet. The category is splitting. AI-first (cheap, intelligent, scalable). Clinician-first (WHOOP, Samsung x Verily, biomarker-led care). The wearables that survive will probably need both. For a European longevity founder watching from the sidelines, this is the playbook. Continuous data alone isn't the moat. Closing the loop with real clinical access is.

    Decoded: The Architecture of Germany's Federated Digital Twin Ecosystem Germany is not building a single, centralized industrial cloud. Instead, Europe's industrial powerhouse is engineering something far more ambitious: a standardized, federated ecosystem designed for data sovereignty and global interoperability. Moving beyond the buzzwords of Industry 4.0 requires understanding the complex machinery underneath. I have visualized the complete "German Model" in this big-picture infographic, breaking down the stack from political foundation to operational application. Here is a walkthrough of the four critical layers that make this ecosystem function: 🔹 1. The Bedrock (Foundation & Standards) The ecosystem rests on a foundation of political consensus and rigorous theory. It is anchored by Plattform Industrie 4.0 and supported by the German government (BMWK, BMBF). Crucially, it adheres to global standards like RAMI 4.0 and IEC, ensuring it is built for international trade, not just domestic use. 🔹 2. The Core (Governance & The Universal Connector) At the heart of the machine sits the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA), backed by major associations like VDMA and ZVEI. The IDTA manages the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). The AAS is the non-negotiable standard—the "digital USB stick" that allows hardware to describe itself in a language any software can understand. 🔹 3. The Highway (Infrastructure & Data Spaces) If AAS is the vehicle, Manufacturing-X is the highway system. Using Eclipse Dataspace Components, this layer enables sovereign, peer-to-peer data sharing across verticals. It connects domain-specific spaces like Catena-X (Automotive), Factory-X (Production), and Energy Data-X. 🔹 4. The City (Community & Application) The top layer shows the vibrant ecosystem building upon this infrastructure. It highlights the tight integration between Research Engines (Fraunhofer, RWTH Aachen), software Enablers (SAP, Siemens, Microsoft), and hardware Adopters (Festo, Bosch, Harting) that are turning the concepts into operational reality. The Strategic Takeaway: The German approach prioritizes federated standards over proprietary lock-in. By separating the "Type" (design phase) from the "Instance" (operational phase), it enables a true lifecycle synchronization loop, unlocking massive value in predictive maintenance and circular economy. That ratio is almost perfectly inverted from what the data says actually works. Organizations that invest in structured change management hit an 88% success rate on transformation initiatives. Those that pour money into tech without touching culture, training, or workflow redesign? They land in the 70% failure pile that McKinsey has been tracking for a decade. The math gets worse. Companies that prioritize culture change, see 5.3x higher success rates than technology-only approaches. And firms with a formal change strategy are 7x more likely to meet their transformation goals. So we have a €93 problem being treated with a €7 solution. I keep seeing this in professional services. A firm buys a new platform, rolls it out with a 45-minute training session, then wonders why adoption stalls after three weeks. The partners go back to email. The associates build workarounds in spreadsheets. Six months later, someone suggests buying a different platform. Technology creates capability. People create capacity. You can't have one without the other. The fix isn't complicated. It just requires admitting that the hardest part of any technology project has nothing to do with technology.     Thrilled to share our new research, co-authored with Annabeth Aagaard and Oliver Gassmann, on how industrial digital platforms are transforming value creation in B2B ecosystems. In many manufacturing settings, platform governance has long been framed as a one-way street: the platform orchestrates, complementors adapt. Our study shows a very different reality. Across five platform providers and five leading manufacturers, we uncover dual orchestration — a dynamic, iterative form of co-governance where both sides continuously adapt roles as digital business models evolve.
